  1. i started out ice fishing thinking an UL reel would balance best and it did work just fine...but didn't take long to realize a larger reel/larger spool equals faster line pickup and less memory, plus is more useful year round
  2. you can get burnt on a used auger...regardless of the condition of the blades, if the auger has been abused and dropped on the head, drilling through old holes, etc it can throw the pitch off and you won't be cutting much ice with it, just spinning i'd only buy a used auger if it had a conical blade on it, best hand auger IMO
  3. x 2 stay away from the canned stuff, get the frozen cooked/uncooked stuff...all you need is enough to barely cover your hook mysis shrimp is a killer but not well known fly pattern
  4. interesting...I have done that with 2 st. croix i've broken...walked in and walked out...maybe it depends on the specific store???
  5. I've tied a few 2oz spinnerbait heads in my fly vise with the saltwater jaws swapped in, no problem...i'd think that any vise with optional saltwater jaws would work...prior to that vice grips or pliers in the bench top vise worked just fine for me
  6. here is a link to the fly line conditioner i mentioned but lots of other comparable products out there http://www.rioproducts.com/product.php?recKey=118 good stuff, really does help shoot your line and float higher last word of advice, when you hook up, watch your knuckles on the initial run!!!
  7. you're golden if you're only planning to fish off the beach and try your luck out...if you were planning a bit of an excursion or paying a guide then some more appropriate gear might be in order when was the last time you were in your backing? how old is your backing and has your reel and backing ever taking a thorough dunking? has your backing-leader knot ever been tested?....I once learned the hard way that damp backing that isn't given a chance to dry out will degrade and lose its strength for 10 bucks I'd recommend spooling up some new backing and giving your current fly line a good cleaning and conditioner buy some fluoro leader material, not for teh "invisibility" factor but for abrasion resistance....make sure all your knots are good and strong
  8. flashy rods for sure...can't say i've used the skeet reese rods...but based on my experience with their other products (waders, fly rods and float rod) i'd stay well away.....for approx same price i'd get a st. croix mojo or triumph...better rod IMO and warranty is much better to deal with
  9. solid fry up right there! I read an interesting article a while back that suggest many fish become cannibals once they reach a certain size...something to do with proteins being the same, as compared to non cannibalized prey, and therefore more growth/nutrition..something like that anyways...I think it was a euro researched paper, mainly talking about pike and zander...if i can find it again i'll post it..very interesting read
  10. diehards to brave the storm, paid off...beauty healthy clean fish! BUT...rapala rep using NRX?!?!
  11. try deeper like mentioned and if you find the weeds there should be fish not far off...I personally like to jig a larger spoon or rap (larger than traditional size perch stuff) with a 4-6" dropper tied on light line(enables perch to easily suck the bait in), steelie hook and whatever bait you prefer...waxies and pieces of shrimp work well
  12. nah, not at all, you might not feel you have rights at that exact moment in time and it's best to cooperate and just let the incident end...but you still have rights afterwards and don't let a cop intimidate you from taking action afterwards sounds like the kid ehre did the right thing and cooperate and the incident ended quickly...but don't let it just be water under the bridge...file a complaint, even without a bad number or name there is still a record of where they were while on duty...there may not be enough evidence to merit any sort of consequence to the cop but maybe he'll think twice next time...hell, who knows, maybe a security cam at little caesars or neighbouring business caught the whole scene???
  13. the officer apologized and then sounds like he left pretty quickly? he knew he was in the wrong...every time their gun is drawn paper work is involved...if he didn't provide id and show his badge, then it sounds like he was avoiding paper work and ridicule back at the station i do genuinely acknowledge that our officers have a tough job as I do have several friends who became cops...but I've encountered enough bad cops at the same time...like to say I've gained wisdom through trial and error...LOL "blind trust" perhaps but let the police do their jobs and make damn sure you know your rights and know what to do if you're involved in an incident and protect yourself from manipulation
  14. If you do not agree with the officer's conduct or actions during the stop, keep track of all pertinent information, including the officer's name and badge number. You have the right to complain at any police station of this Service, to the Professional Standards – Investigative Unit, or the Ontario Civilian Commission on Police Services. Officers are unable to handle your complaint on the scene.
  15. little late but if you're ever in a similar situation ask for full name and badge number and then if you believe he/she engaged inappropriate action you can file a complaint A Toronto Police Officer: -will provide his or her name and badge number upon request. -who is not in uniform will present proper identification; you may ask to examine the badge and photo identification so that you are satisfied the person is a police officer. -will tell you why you are being stopped. -will only use the force allowed by law (for example, to stop an offence, effect the arrest of a suspect or maintain custody of a prisoner). -will generally arrest a person for a crime committed in the officer's presence, or when the officer has reasonable grounds to believe the person has already committed or is about to commit a crime. Things To Do When Stopped Again, officers are trained to place a great deal of emphasis on their safety and yours so they can do the job of safeguarding the public. Many of these guidelines conform to safety procedures, based on long experience, that officers are trained to follow. Keep your hands where the officer can see them. Don't put your hands in your pocket or clothing. Stay put and stay calm. Don't walk or run from police. Don't touch any police officer. Cooperate with the officer. Don't get into an argument. http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/whenstopped/
  16. haha...love it...bringing back some memories but gotta be careful doing that these days...a cop would charge that driver with reckless
  17. hmmm...very curious what reels have failed you so quickly in the past??? always close the bail by hand, never just by reeling i use and abuse my gear and never had many major failures...proper maintenance and when they get dirty..aka sand...clean ASAP, stop using it immediately and clean it of course quality/high end gear will generally last longer and failing all that...just pray that chuck norris will make a fishing reel some day..lol
  18. grow op or ice fishin going down in there? lol only thing it's maybe missing is a more secure lock to keep the hooligans on simcoe out of it nicely done, sharp looking!
  19. the 2500 series spool would be less susceptible to memory than the 500 series spools for sure...you could try to find a reel that has a larger diameter spool than average to help...there's a few models out there but not sure how small they go and how well they'd balance on an ice rod limp lines that are better in cold vs. abrasive resistant lines...ie trilene xl vs xt thicker diameter lines stiffen up and hold more memory in colder temps, so use the lightest you can get away with fill your spool right to the lip, may cause some tangles(operator errors IMO..lol) but will be less memory than only half filling a spool, which I seem to notice many guys do for ice fishing buy reels that have oversized line rollers and add a light drop of oil to the bearing give a braided line an honest try, not perfect but the pros outweigh the cons for me and not nearly as bad as most say
  20. thank you, exactly what i was looking for...and pretty much what i was expecting to hear, i'd guess its close to the same material used for my ht pop up hut, which is good enough for a light use backpacking hut but i want something a lot heavier for a flip over...
  21. really want the pro, think it's the best shelter out there IMO, but no local dealers and shipping will make it even pricier...I can get the team wild locally and hoping somebody has a review of the fabric? 600 denier vs 900 on the pro...I know some of the clam's use 600 and wondering if the team wild fabric is susceptible to the same "million pinhole" effect or if that's just a clam quality issue??? http://www.otteroutdoors.com/wild2package.html also a few brookies from the weekend, cheers
  22. I've recently bought a 2000 ranger 4.0...changed the oil immediately and was the dirtiest oil i've ever soon...i'm considering running SF in the crankcase but held back so far due to a wide range of contrasting opinions...anybody with experience using SF in the crankcase? I know not to run it for too long as teh breakdown will clog things up...but aside from that, any other words of wisdom? just add in 1/3 can and run for 10-15 mins and dump the oil?
  23. running my first pair of studs here in BC...last winter and this season....night and day difference...and IMO really help braking have a set of west lakes
  24. sound advice...i'm also playing around with borax curing and using an egg loop
  25. don't buy an okuma float rod...they make a decent entry level reel but the rod is no good...streamside and quantum both make better rods for only a few bucks more...also look around for a quality used rod, lots out there http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-sports-bikes-FloatFishing-Centre-Pin-Rod-Reel-Combo-W0QQAdIdZ245483006 http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-sports-bikes-St-Croix-Steelhead-Salmon-Float-106-Fishing-Rod-May-Trade-W0QQAdIdZ247265568 http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-hobbies-crafts-Raven-IM6-Float-rod-CUSTOM-136-W0QQAdIdZ247250866
