I think a lot of you guys missed the point or you have such low expectations of the media that you just took it as a matter of course. The media got their facts wrong, they played the story up into something it wasn't and were completely irresponsible. This resulted in a man being harassed and threatened who did not commit the alleged offence.
An Abu Garcia Ambassaduer 6600 Carpmaster reel, 8'6" MH Ugly Stik, 17lb Berkley XT, 1/0 & 2/0 Owner bait holder hooks, assorted egg sinkers and split shot, a Fox Stalker pod and a couple of bank sticks.
I just read the latest on this. The hunter who stepped forward and took responsibilty and who's name was put out there is now getting harassing phone calls and threats. He is not the guy that shot at the dog.
I think that there are lots of facets to this issue. One is we here in Ontario ( in particular ) are becoming a society of control freaks. You can't control the internet so there is fear.
The other, is the issue of modern technology. The guys with the 100 mph boats use them to check out where on the lake the fish are actively hitting. They do this by checking out other guys that are catching.
Being mostly a bank angler I know there are guys that "car hunt" . They know your vehicle and know that you target the same fish they do. The next day they are in " your spot" and they make sure they get there 1/2 an hour before you do. It is just the way they play the game.
Reading the water or water craft has been replaced by fishing off of other anglers.
I know one thing. In a few years that young man will walk free. The young man with the brain damage and the parents that will look after him got life sentences.
This article and video recently appeared in a local newspapers webpage. It portrays a family terrorized by careless hunters .

The truth came out a few days later
The hunters were 400 m. away not 240 ft.
The hunters were on the neighboring 100 acre property at the request of the land owner.
They were set up to decoy in coyotes.
The dog was stalking the decoy.
They both were experienced coyote hunters and had shot black coyotes before and even had a picture of one.
The dog is shepherd like.
The hunters immediately talked to the police about the incident.
They offered to pay for the vet bill.
Nuff said.
Sounds like a good plan. We'll catch the carp and feed the bears with them. That will keep the bears out of trouble.
Of course being a gov't run operation it will probably cost the same as feeding the bears fillet mignon.
Ontario did join other great lake states in a court action. We lost. Of course when it comes to legal systems there never is a last word.
Like I said we have never stopped anything like this before. So we might as well think of ways to cope with having these fish in our waters.
Here's something else. The electric barrier that was supposed to stop the carp from getting into the great lakes was originally proposed and set up to stop the round goby from entering the mississippi watershed from the great lakes. It failed.
Has anybody thought of what the result will be if and when these things get into the great lakes? Besides it's the end of the world. I say when because we have never successfully stopped anything like this.
Will they even do well in the great lakes? Two other native filter feeders the bigmouth buffalo fish and the paddle fish have not done that well in the great lakes.
If they are successful and do populate the great lakes in vast numbers will this result in the revival of commercial fishing. These fish are supposed to be good eating and because they are filter feeders, they should not be as contaminated as lake trout and other preditor fish.
Will this result in massive stocking campaigns? Puts lots and lots of big hungry chinooks in to feed off of the millions of asian carp fry.
Wiil the cormorant population skyrocket to even greater nmbers?
Wiil the sea lamprey population explode because a huge increase in fodder for them?
I know that this is shear speculation but like I stated . We have never stopped anything like this before. They are here to stay and we will have to cope with this.
