  1. I've seen them in the Indian River, south of Warsaw Caves Conservation Area. Nice river for a quiet canoe paddle, catching some gar would be a bonus!
  2. I've often passed by the small waterbody named Island Lake at the intersection of the York-Durham Line and Regional Road 15, and wondered about fishing it. Seems nice and small, safe enough for a canoe. Anyone have any experience?
  3. Hmmm... that's a poser, let me see if I can figure it out... Apparently 'David' is Hebrew for 'beloved', although I'm only 1% Jewish (I'll let you guys figure that one out, but I will tell you that at 1% I'm probably bragging), and 'Bailey' comes from the same root as 'bail' and 'bailiff', and the 'bailey' was a large walled compound that was part of a 'motte and bailey' style fortification. Perhaps I had ancient relatives who were bailiffs, or, far more likely, they were constantly posting bail.
  4. Pucker factor - off the scale. I've flown powered aircraft, gliders, hang-gliders, and parachutes, love it all. Get me two steps up a ladder and I'm almost frozen with fear. Used to skydive with a guy who was scared of flying, white-knuckled all the way up and a big grin when he jumped out. Weird the way minds work, eh?
  5. I think that what we've been able to learn from this thread is that the best bait for smallmouth bass is... ... ... ... ANYTHING! Just put something in the water, better than nothing.
  6. CeCRopia actually,and they're gorgeous!
  7. Another vote for drop-shotting with Slammers!
  8. If all else fails this should help you quit: Q - What's the worst thing about getting a lung transplant? A - Every time you cough you get a mouthful of someone else's phlegm.
  9. Excuuuuuse me? That's 'American'. 'Yank' is politically incorrect!
  10. Congratulations! But... Make sure you get regular medical check-ups. Nicotine is highly addictive, and I have trouble believing that suddenly cutting yourself off after so many years won't cause physical stress. I don't want to scare you, but I have seen many life-long smokers quit cold turkey and then develop serious medical conditions soon after. Can't hurt to let your doctor know, and get a full physical work-up asap, and frequently thereafter. In the meantime...
  11. Good on ya Brandon, skydiving is a blast! Unfortunately I could never get over the complete disorientation on exit, so I knew that it would be a loooooong time before I could go free fall without endangering myself. But I would go again in a heartbeat!
  12. Unfortunately it wouldn't work for me, because another thing that sets it off is cold. During cold weather I have to ensure that I have an undershirt tucked into my pants and the sweatshirt mustn't ride up, otherwise one cold draft across my abdomen and I'm off to the sandbox.
  13. LOVE dragonflies! They are just about the best mosquito control too, we need more of them.
  14. Looks delicious! Unfortunately I can no longer have coffee, it aggravates my IBS. One way I used to enjoy it was to make a French blend, which has a strong flavour to start with, make it a little extra strong, and sweeten it with a generous amount of maple syrup. I called it a French-Canadian coffee, my own little contribution to national unity! Sadly, no more...
  15. I hate that song. Now I hate it more. Please don't make me watch it again, because I don't want to go back to the asylum. And I'm running out of places to hide the bodies.
  16. Beautiful stuff Brandon, one of my favourite birds too. I saw one at Wheatley Provincial Park this year, not unusual in itself, but it was at the top of a 40 foot tree! Don't know what he planned on catching up there. My best experience of one was on the Humber River here in Toronto. It was 'fishing' with a down feather, putting it into the water and pushing it around and then waiting for any reaction. It was so engrossed I was able to get the canoe so close it was literally within my arm's reach - AND I DIDN'T HAVE MY CAMERA WITH ME!!! :wallbash:
  17. , try to not have a fit when you see the gas price sign at the start!
  18. Good eating, despite what some say. I've had pickled pike too, not bad.
  19. That report is a model of how it should be done - good photos and good writing. Sounds like a great day, thanks for letting us in on the fun!
  20. Can't see anything in there saying you must use a hook. As long as you're not using a net, spear, or bow illegally, I say go for it. We really need a CO on staff here.
  21. I've heard similar, but it involved some frayed yellow nylon rope. Allegedly they bite on it and then twist it around their jaws and get all tangled up.
