  1. I can't believe the attitude of some of the people on this site. The guy said they did NOT oppose the plans when they were set up with a buffer zone. They did not oppose new families (or whoever) enjoying the lake. He says they opposed the development now that they bulldozed the existing buffer zones (good point that they could put in new ones...nice sidestep by them) and knocked down wetland that was supposed to go under an impact assessment first. What in the world is wrong with that? As for what to do -- I'd look to use the media (the only thing that will matter to the city, vs. development dollars). Just be sure you do so in a credible way....if you come off as a tree hugger, you won't get far. If you're a local taxpayer who is a good citizen on the lake and a the story is about a developer who is sidestepping rules and the city doesn't care because of the dollars involved.....that's a different story that may get some momentum behind it. Also talk to the appropriate ministry officials about the environmental impact assessments - ask for copies of what was done. I don't know specifics of the process but assume they are less motivated by local development than the city might be. There are also lawyers who specialize in this stuff -- there was one who stopped a logging truck route development in the town where our cottage is.
  2. You shoulda brought it home :-). Lots of people have domesticated them...i believe genghis kahn or alexander hte great used them to go through northern bush....faster/more endurance than a horse (through the bush), believe it or not.
  3. if you like to walk around the boat a lot when you're fishing, single console is great. i personally prefer dual console....so much nicer for the passenger.
  4. I would much rather pay more for my fishing license and see it go directly to CO budget....either to hire more or enable somehow. For every 5 folks who sign up for the right reasons i'm sure there'll be 1 or more who sign up for the wrong reasons...and i'd hate to be on the wrong end of a power hungry guy infringing on my weekend, especially if he/she didn't know the rules.
  5. We have bearbangers that work really well....basically no different from fireworks -- a little charge on the end of a pen. Pop the pen and it shoots and lets off a big bang. Shoot in the air and they'll run. Shoot at their feet and you'll scare the crap out of them. Just don't shoot behind them and have it running towards you when the bang goes off.
  6. Pretty cool with hunting. You're putting me in the wrong bucket. Maybe just luck or i'm seeing the same deer(s). Have seen 2....one iwth mark, and another with the bit sticking right out of it (feeding in parents yard)...and have a friend who hunts and lost a deer that he shot as well.....(which i felt like calling him an ass for but bit my tongue). Anyway - we're derailing the thread. Happy to go over it view PM or in another thread if you like. And, if you have moose steaks i'd love to try them.
  7. The double lung shot - certain for sure. I was referring to the shots that miss a bit. Have seen a lot of deer with broken arrows in them. Everyone has. Assumed a bullet drops the animal much faster. Maybe i'm wrong though - have never seen a large animal shot with a gun either (just birds). And that said, maybe the arrow is more humane....if you don't get it just right, the animal doesn't necessarily die (the way it usually does iwth a bullet). btw - sorry for derailing the thread. Its a very cool video, and i'm the first to dig in to a nice venison steak (am yet to taste moose). I am not against hunting.
  8. Team sports are awesome. Aside from hockey -- if you have a rugby club nearby you might check to see if there's a kids level (some do, albeit few). Rugby is one of the best camaraderie sports i know....and a true team sport. Moreso than most.
  9. I have no problem at all with hunting and REALLY appreciate the skill behind bow hunting, but i really wish the kill was faster, more-humane and more certain. Pretty cool video though. Its pretty amazing how aggressive the bulls are at that time of year. I also really respect the skill and patience of those guys. I would've been shaking.
  10. and in my case the pike was being chased my another pike.
  11. Thanks guys. Pier is cool but is anyone catching anything there right now? Assume its very infrequent at best? Petrocan park....is that north of rebecca?
  12. Had a similar thing happen to me with a little pike (albeit with no dramatic leadup) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DLrnFtc9wY...feature=related
  13. Hi folks -- recently moved to SW oakville, and would love to drop by sometime just to see/watch the fishing (and or just th fish if there's a particular spot that's good for seeing them)....any recommendations? Other than right at th lake i don't know of anywhere to easily drive/walk up to...?
  14. as others have said, they're not native to the kawarthas lakes and threaten what is a pretty unique/amazing muskellunge fishery. Its a losing battle though....having anglers keep the pike they catch isn't going to fix things.
  15. Not true. To each his/her own i guess, but i wouldn't eat it.
  16. Exactly. Any fish large enough to be legal is also too big to safely eat.
  17. i would happily pay triple the annual fishing license fee if it meant there'd be enough COs to deal with these guys. Its pretty gross how i absolutely love fishing, live 2 mins from bronte creek, and would never venture down there to fish because what happens is just so disgusting.
  18. Beautiful fish. They all look pretty healthy. When they release those fish, are they in/near the area where they were caught? I assume they are released somewhere just off the weighing station, right?
  19. also, assuming you don't have any baits for musky, i would go with 2 or 3 of.... A big black jerk bait.....suicks are most popular. I like bobbie baits better. Bait will rest on (or near) the surface. Reel it in with big violent jerks, it'll dive down erratically, splashing lots of water....reel in the slack, and repeat. A big minnow bait like a believer or a grandma. You can troll or reel in, or even use with an erratic jerk retrieve. Maybe a glide bait like a hellhound or manta. Big spinners and spinnerbaits are used less in the fall....if you do try them, get soemthing with big/mutliple blades and reel much slower than you would in the summer. A nice slow roll.
  20. 17 lb is really pushing it -- probably fine for a 36 incher but if you get something in the mid 40's or above you'll be kicking yourself. You'll either snap the line and lose the fish (and it'll swim away with a hook in its mouth) or even if you are successful landing it you'll likely wear it out and won't be able to release it. Muskies have tons of power, but they aren't a salmon. If you have a long drawn-out fight with a musky its chances of surviving release drops waaaay off. You need to get it in quickly...kind of hard on 17 lb test. The rest seems fine. If it workls bettter for your reel try 50lb test (80 makes sense if you're trolling, and/or using MASSIVE lures). Even 40 might do the trick. If you get powerpro or something like it, it won't be much different from using 20lb test mono....
  21. I fish a lot...and have for almost 25 of the 35 yrs of my life. Have only run into COs twice, and both were on remote back lakes (and not the main lake that i fish on 95% of the time, which is also frequented by lots of other fishermen and fisherwomen). I always wondered how it made sense to be at a remote back lake where they *might* run into one fishing party.....but either way, was glad to see them. I like that they're out checking licenses and stuff. Too many people i know fish without a license and without any regard for the rules. I hopet hey get caught one day.
  22. Toronto star has a pretty fantastic long distance deal...4 bucks a month unlimited in north america, plus a 10 per year membership fee. Vonage is apparently great if you have cable high speed internet (not nearly as good if you have phone/dsl high speed) Unlimitel? as well, apparently.
  23. Don't try to do too much...just keep your line in the water and relax. Enjoy your day. I love trolling hwen i'm by myself. Also, if you keep the tip of your rod in the water it helps to cut down on weeds. Not easy with some rods, but something you might try.;
  24. I have had success with mid size silver husky jerks for pike.
  25. Looking at booking a charter with some buddies....how late can you go and still (reasonably) count on getting some fish? I assume they start to bunch around rivermouths in september??
