We are taking Monday off to make a long weekend and heading to Pelee Island for some biking, swimming and hanging out. We are taking fishing gear but not a boat; would anyone have hints for shore fishing on the island? Thanks in advance. Dan

Fishing is allowed. The way the woman acted I am surprised a squirrel didn't come along and bury her. Dan

marking line to tell how much line you have out

I'll second the Rapala line counter, $20 and it is easy to swap from rod to rod. Dan -
John: This site has lots of information: River Smallies also check out Harry Murray's site under the FAQs, I have his book Fly fishing for Smallmouth Bass that I can lend you. Dan

Streamers should work well for you. If they are surface feeding be sure to try surface patterns - as long as your heart is in good shape! Dan

Although electronics aren't as sensitive as they used to be, it is best to shut them off when starting if they are connected to the start battery. This helps to avoid spikes from the starter and the alternator when it comes on line. 99.9% of the time you will be ok if you don't but the .1% of the time is expensive, and I haven't figured out how to put the smoke back in the boxes.

Getting in won't be the issue, it will be getting back if at all. Be sure to check US immigration requirements. Dan

Great report, thanks for sharing. Keep up the fly fishing, once you start down the dark path you can't go back. Dan

8 megs works for me, you just have to be sure the area you are going to is loaded. With the Garmin TopoCanada I use my computer to make waypoints on a map, points of interest like river mouths, islands and so on. I load the area maps and waypoints to the Legend. Then print out the map with the waypoints (on a lazer printer because ink jet runs when it gets wet) Once underway I fire up the GPS and use it to orient to the waypoints, and also mark good fishing spots. It is also a good idea to mark your campsite, launch or vehicle. Dan

The Legend is a decent solid unit I have had one for over eight years. They don't take chips or cards but will upload Garmin Maps from a computer very slowly and only hold 8 megs. The proprietary mapping software will cost almost as much as the unit ($150), currently I use Topo Canada which doesn't have hydrographic data. The Blue Chart map software sold by Garmin has detail for the Great Lakes in Canada but little else. Dan

Either blue or green will do, neither is really suitable to get wet but should be fine with an insert. Cement board is recommended under tiles. Dan

Great report, How come your wife ain't afraid of the blackflies? LOL Dan

Thanks for posting, my parents were children in Holland in WW2 and lost many relatives in camps. My mom's family helped several families and allied airmen to hide and escape. I am grateful for all who fought in action and deed for our freedom. Dan

A bug jacket if the bugs are bad. DEET is nasty stuff, unless you are in areas of bug borne diseases, the relief is not worth the side effects. In Canada manufactures have been forced to reduce the concentrations of DEET to less than 30%, it cannot be recommended for use on toddlers or infants and only recommend limited use on children under 12 using concentrations of 10% or less. On a fly setup, use 8 to 10 feet of 6 lb Fireline, pike don't tend to be line shy. Dan

Thanks for all the comments. We went in at the Rock Lake campground, stayed on Pen Lake went to Welcome, Harry, Rence, and Clydegale Lakes and also paddled up the South Madawaska River. We didn't do too well on the lakes but had better luck in rapids and in the fast runs over beaver dams. I am certainly fortunate to have a family that loves the outdoors, my daughter has come through a lot but never complains - every day is special. Dan

Went to Algonquin Park this past long weekend for some camping, canoeing, and fishing. It rained a bit, but we were prepared so it was enjoyable, no bugs with the cool weather. Some nice trout water: So we stopped and fished: My daughter's first Brook Trout: Amazing colours: I have to remember to keep my mouth shut: I was using a fly rod and the trout were smacking the streamers right on the surface, this is a Mickey Finn I tied: Supper time with our mascot: We did our longest portage to date 2170 meters, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Thanks for looking Dan

We use TSP (tri sodium phosphate) to scrub the walls before painting; it will remove any oil residue like fingerprints and dirt. You can buy TSP in granular form in most hardware stores; just follow the directions for the proper dilution. Use a Scotch Brite pad to scrub and it will roughen up the surface at the same time, to allow the primer to adhere better. Dan
