  1. Your first good quality set up is almost exactly the same as the first one I bought. Just swap the reel with a Sahara 2500. It is still a go to rod & reel setup in my arsenal. Needless to say, you made a good choice!
  2. Those are beauty fish! Makes me miss living down there!
  3. Nice Job Worm Dangler. I wanted to get out today, but I'm stuck painting my basement instead.
  4. Wicked report man. Those are some big smallies!
  5. Seems like an over reaction to me. I've brought 4 piece rod tubes on planes a bunch of times in the past few years and never had a problem. I guess if they could not identify the owner, who knows better safe than sorry.
  6. Is it necessary, I say no. If you have dedicated reels for ice fishing it can be nice though.
  7. Amen brother! Thanks for the heads up on the deals Solopaddler.
  8. Your Biology teacher is an idiot and she should stick to teaching the curriculum and keep her opinions to herself.
  9. I sympathize Worm Dangler, the job scene in this town can be tough. I've been incredibly lucky work wise in the Soo, especially since I work in a very specialized field. I understand why you don't want to leave town, I've lived all over this country and I've never found a city with this combination of friendly people, affordable housing and fantastic fishing. Of course part of the reason why the housing is so affordable, is the dodgy job market. When I graduated college, I had a hard time finding work so I went out to Alberta, it's different now, but when I was there they were practically handing out jobs at the airport. I worked there for a while, and took the experience and used it to get where I wanted to be. My only advice would be to keep moving forward. Whatever you decide to do, do something. There is nothing worse than sitting at home waiting for something to happen for you. You've got to go out and make something happen for yourself.
  10. I love that show, this sucks.
  11. I'm absolutely interested in watching. From what I know of Bass Pro fishing, which isn't much, I'll be cheering for Kevin VanDam to win and cheering for Mike Iaconelli to fall out of his boat. I've never watched a Bassmaster on TV, what channel is it on? Can I watch it on TSN or a "basic" cable network, or do I have to have WFN?
  12. Nice fat pike! LOL! Yeah pikeie I agree, Ottertail is full of little pike that fool you into thinking they're trophies until you see them, tons of fun though!
  13. I use some Berkley products. Gulp, Powerbait, and Trilene XL have a home in my tackle box, I find them to be quality products. Fireline, Vanish & Berkely rods, well, lets just say you can buy better stuff.
  14. That looks like a skin mount! Beautiful!
  15. Right hand retrieve, casting and spinning reels.
  16. She could stand there reading her grocery list out loud and I'd still be a fan.
  17. Not the fish fry I had in mind thanks to the skunking I incurred on Haviland Bay this morning.
  18. Get the thumper. No mixing gas, quieter, less maintenance. What's not to like?!
  19. I used to buy 1 piece rods thinking they had more uniform flex, more sensitivity etc. Then when I started fly fishing I realized all the high end fly rods are 4 piece. Rod flex is critical when fly casting. Now I figure, if 1 $700 Orvis fly rod can come in 4 pieces, there's no reason to think a 2 piece spinning rod is somehow not as good as a one piece. Plus, I've broken 1 piece rods threading them into the car through the trunk all the way up between the front seats.
  20. I subscribe to; 1. Ontario Out of Doors (locally relevant information) 2. Canadian Fly Fisher (beautiful photography, Canadian fly fishing content) 3. BC Outdoors (Just because I love BC, but I'm not renewing it as I just don't have the time to read it) 4. Field & Stream (diverse subject matter) In fisherman is also excellent, but I let my subscription slide as I just don't have time to read all of them.
  21. I'm certainly not a qualified expert on the subject, but I've seen the videos of these things flying out of the water and clocking boaters in the head. I'm quite fearful of what these fish could do to our Great Lakes fisheries.
  22. 1. Canoeing into a backcountry pickerel lake on opener one year, weather was great on the first two lakes and the portage, but when we got on the main lake the wind was nuts. We were going to camp on an island, and there was no safe place to beach on the route. The wind was so bad, we were just crawling forward, big waves for a little canoe. When we got to the Island I got out of the canoe and hugged and kissed my wife like it was the end of time. We didn't leave the island all weekend, luckily we could catch walleye right off the island. 2. Hiking with camping gear in 10km in the middle of winter in LSPP -25 nights, brutal. Normally not all that bad, but we got SKUNKED all weekend. 3. put my truck in a ditch, again in the middle of winter on our way to a speck lake. I though we'd be out there all night. Thankfully a kindly snowmobiler with a cabin near by came by and offered to get his truck to pull us out.
  23. One 6'6" medium action spinning rod and a mess of jig heads for pickerel. Then a 9' 5wt fly rod and some tying material for specks. I wouldn't buy any cheap crap. Only quality rods and reels. They make fishing more enjoyable and they last longer. O wouldn't buy any hard plastic tackle boxes. Tackle bags are the way to go IMO.
  24. Nothing too spectacular. A seagull while flatlining for salmon in the spring, a cormorant while casting for salmon in the fall, and a snapping turtle while fishing for whatever when I was a kid.
  25. Arctic Char & Alligator Gar. But quite frankly, I'd settle for catching a 6 pound speck somewhere in Algoma.
