140,000+ white fish released into lake Simcoe.
Burtess replied to misfish's topic in General Discussion
So do most keep the clipped fish and let the wild ones go? I have never caught a whitefish (maybe this year!), you can't pan fry or bbq them? What do they taste like? Burt -
You can rig it at the top and bottom like the Redwing floats you have used. Just need larger tubing or elastic for the top. Burt

Obtaining Roe...tough to do it properly...
Burtess replied to Familyfisherman's topic in General Discussion
I am going to be honest here..... I use roe amoungst many other baits for steelhead, the last salmon I harvested for roe came was a pier fish with a looser skein taken 4 years ago. I ran out this spring. So I am not a very heavy roe user. I needed to replenish the stock for the next couple years or so...... so I went out this past weekend and spent an hour catching a female salmon, perfectly just to the side of the nose inside the mouth, on a single Jensen egg in cherise. Landed her, bonked her on the head, triple garbage bagged, and into the backpack. I am not very keen on slitting them up on the river bank, best to do that stuff at home. So a perfectly legal fish but did it actually hit the bait, I highly doubt it. How did the hook get in the mouth? Angler skill? Lol whatever.... I am just glad I don't have to fish that flow again until November when the trout start coming in. Definitely no sport in that!! Burt -
They are retro BassPro breathables lol... no Simms here They already have a lot of Aquaseal on the inside leg seams that wear out.... but these are not leaks, its more of a seep. The outers do no shed water at all anymore so I think doing a treatment will help them out a lot. Burt

My breathable waders have lost their ability to repel water and are starting to get damp on the inside. I am going to wash them, probably with Woolite or a Nikwax wash. What do you use to treat them? Revivex product or Nikwax spray? Can they go in the dryer to set the product on low? I don't want to destroy them. Thanks! Burt

During the week some kind of toasted bagel / toast / English muffin with peanut butter. Weekends its easy over eggs, and I have become one of the hot sauce bunch...... a really good one, although not very hot, is the Chipotle Tabasco. A really nice smokey flavour. For added protein I like peameal bacon or a thin cut med. steak (don't like blood on the eggs!!!). Burt

Canuck2fan..... do you buy the button spring clips at the pool store or somewhere else? (and just so you know I have never been cut or lost my wingnuts ) Burt

Take the cap off the end and slide a broom handle in 15" or so, drill either through both and put in a bolt and wing nut or just through the aluminum net handle and screw a screw eye into the wood. Mark both the broom handle and the net handle with a marker so you easily know where it lines up. Whole thing can be taken apart and thrown in the trunk (keep the bolt and wing nut in your tackle pack or the screw eye twisted into the broom handle). Burt

I was looking at the Nat's in Sail today. VERY light weight and rated -60C. Like crazy light!! I realize that they are not at all breathable being a EVA foam shell but they can't be any less breathable than my Titans. Can anyone comment on the snow and ice traction of the molded EVA sole? It would seem to me like wearing Crocs on the ice Burt

Sorry hijack.... Have you ever tried some of the zirconium or trivalent chromium based pretreatments over Al? If so what were your experiences with them? Burt

Take a look at Costco if you or a friend has a membership. They have many different models and also the great Costco return policy if it doesn't work the way you want. http://www.costco.ca/surveillance-systems.html?langId=-24&storeId=10302&catalogId=11201&identifier=surveillance-systems&categoryId=32146&sortBy=PriceMin%7C0 Burt

I agree.... and all the spots he mentioned he said were crap so I don't see how this would lead to them getting pounded lol....... don't really think the post should have been locked either. FishingDoofus, how bout you start again and post an intro and take it from there? And remember it's the quiet ones on here that are the axe murderers and rapists lol..... Burt

Is this the correct way of using a baitmaker?
Burtess replied to redpearl99's topic in General Discussion
No need to lift the aluminum "holder" to twist. Open aluminum "holder", lay square of mesh over it, add eggs over mesh to depression in plastic base, grasp edges of mesh tighten up as you close the aluminum "holder". Burn off excess with soldering iron (such as http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/WeldingSoldering/Soldering/PRD~0586305P/Mastercraft+25W+Soldering+Iron.jsp?locale=en). Open and pull out completed spawn sac. Thats the easiest way to do it. Burt -
Yup, that was me... personally.... and totally true. Pipe coming from the engine, passing through catalytic converter, straight pipe where the muffler had been, and through the resonator and to the tail pipe. Tech mentioned the muffler missing and I questioned that the muffler does only that - muffle noise - and since the catalytic converter was intact, that he should test the van. He did and it indeed passed, which makes sense. Burt

NF - Toronto Police officer charged with 2nd degree murder
Burtess replied to BucktownAngler's topic in General Discussion
Maybe the cop cracked who knows (I guess we will find out). Interesting that you still hear them yelling to "drop the knife" after the 9 shots rang out. Then they tazered him. We'll see how this one plays out in the courts. Burt -
I had my van tested with the CEL on and no muffler (just a straight pipe from the cat to the resonator) and they tested it and it passed lol... Burt

Humminbird Ice Transducer on sale at Sail.... (yes a bit early)
Burtess replied to Burtess's topic in General Discussion
Haven't used it yet but looking at the high vertical res. and the very fast scroll speed when set to "ultra" I think it should do well for ice fishing. Radioworld apparently bought a large number of these units at a very low price and are selling them off. They have lots left. Yup, the spare will become the modified summer transducer from my Pirhanna Max 160. Burt -
Ice Fishing Sonar Question (ya kinda early I know lol....)
Burtess replied to Burtess's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the replies. Redpearl99, I will probably keep the 160 for a spare but I will let you know if I want to sell it. I use the suction cup transducer modded with a piece of heavy copper wire and a piece of pipe insulation for a float. MJL, I think that is due to the LCD vs. the TFT on the 345.... that screen technology doesn't slow down with the cold. That's why I mentioned that I fish mostly in my portable hut with the heater on, it doesn't get cold enough to affect the LCD speed. Stoty, my buddy has a Vex and he loves it but I prefer to watch the graph. Burt- 8 replies

Last season I used a PiranhaMax 160 portable for ice fishing since I picked it up really cheap. With this unit I could see my jig down at 100ft (even my swivel above) so it worked ok. I am looking at the Humminbird 570 right now since I it looks like I can pick one up for $100 and put it in my portable pack to replace the 160. The plus I think would be the larger screen and much higher resolution. Question, what makes the "ice" models better for ice fishing? I know they have the special transducer, but this is no worry to me as I have the other one "rigged" up. Looking at a few models: Model Display Colour Greyscale Vert Hor Power Transducer PiranhaMax 160 4” no 4 level 160 128 800W Dual 60/20 Humminbird 570 5” no 12 level 640 320 2000W Dual 60/20 Humminbird ICE 345C 3.5” 256 TFT 320 240 2400W Dual 60/20 Lowrance Elite 4X 3.5” 256 TFT 320 240 2100W Dual 60/20 So looking at the specs, aside from the colour vs. greyscale (and TFT screen but I use mine almost always in the heated hut).......... the 570 should work just as good no? Maybe I am missing something? Thanks!! Burt

Yup, there were a lot of them when we were up at Marten River week before last too. Also when I was in Midland last Thursday for work there were a lot even on the inside walls of the plant. Burt

Where is a good place to park for access to the Grand in Brantford downstream of the special regs section? Going to be wading and going for bass. Don't need any hotspots (I will find those myself lol) just a good place to park. Thanks!!!!! Burt

Spent last week up at Beaverland Camp in Marten River with a great bunch of guys. All 14 of us were accommodated in cabin #14 which has 4 bedrooms with two sets of bunks in each. It was my first time up with this bunch (some have been coming up together for decades) and I am proud to say I was voted back in for next year! Fishing was decent, with the most / largest fish coming from Bruce Lake (access to McPhee was restricted due to a large beaver dam). Lots of smaller walleye just under the slot (16.9 - 23.6") made for a couple of awesome fish frys. Most of the smaller ones came on a whole nightcrawler while drifting. The large ones on plastic (love those Powerbait Rippletails in white!!) Caught quite a few pike on soft swimbaits too, nothing too big but good for the fish fry. Bass opened up on the last fishing day so we got into a few of them too. Here are some pics: Spotted some young moose crossing Bruce Lake, man can they ever move: One just at top end of the slot: Just over the slot at 24 1/4" : A respectable bass from Saturday: Burt
