Dropped by today on the way home from Midland. Overall not impressed, just kind of wandered around, not too keen on the layout. Prices....ouch lol... The worst part is the actual store location. The far back of the complex? And when you leave to get on the 400 Southbound..... 3 or 4 cars make the left per green signal? Brutal. Can't see myself wasting the time to visit again unless I want to pick up an advertised sale item or something.... Burt

Atlantic strain bull shark..... Burt

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to add I am allergic to shrimp so getting fresh from the kitchen is out! Anyone used the Gulp Peeler Crabs? Or soft plastic craws on a jig? Shloim mentioned 4lb test? Did you mean 40lb?? I have done more google searching and I think the locals are handlining 40-50lb test. I picked up a Rapala Husky 7.5' combo from LeBaron for just over $20. Going to spool it with 12lb mono and leave it for a local fisherman when I leave. Burt

I never looked at the game of soccer from that kind of political standpoint My background is quite mixed but my father was born in Germany. Anyone asks him what nationality he is and he says "Canadian". Let's just hope for a good game (and just a game) Burt

Heading to Cayo Coco in a couple of weeks. Never been to Cuba before nor beach fished in salt water. Anyone ever fished this area? I am thinking a med. action spinning rod with 10pd mono. Bunch of Krocodiles and other similar spoons, some plugs, and jigs (white twisters and hair jigs). I want to leave all my stuff behind for the locals but I understand that most use hand lines and bait. I would like to take a bunch of mono and hooks for them as well as I don't think they have much of anything. Sufix Premium is on sale at Sail for $2.49 per 1/4lb spool so I will pick up a few of these.... what pd test do the locals use for handlines? What size hooks do they use? Any info would be appreciated by those that have been to this area or Cuba in general. Thanks!!! Burt

I have used 20lb XL to tie mine. Also to reduce the clevis wear on the line make sure you use the folded clevis and not the ones with the holes punched through. Burt

Driving home last week there was a turtle crossing the two lane road in the oncoming lane. First thought was to pull a u turn and move it to the ditch. Then I think of the location.... just over the crest of a hill... if I stop either my car would not be seen or they would see the car but not see me and I get run over...... to bad for the turtle! This girl had absolutely no common sense and is like many fanatical animal lovers today, they see an animal in peril and they will do anything for it, even if it means risking their life or someone else. It's like they go into a trance. Burt

Portable transducer mount - Sully or home made??
Burtess replied to Burtess's topic in General Discussion
Awesome, thanks! Burt -
I need to rig up a portable transducer mount for use on rentals etc. I am not fond of the suction cup that comes with the unit. I was thinking to use a 1X2 and a couple C-clamps but then I saw the Sully transducer mount on line. Anyone ever used one of these? Or have any other tested methods to mount a transducer? Thanks, Burt

But the internal temperature of an Orca is much higher than what the probe read after it was "eaten"...... so not an Orca.... Burt
-
Another Great White shark ate it........ stomach temperature of Great White shark is reportedly 13 - 25 F over ambient, so 46F to 78F change in temperature could make sense. Orca does not make sense since the inner temp of these whales looks to be 97.5 to 100F..... Sperm whale I don't think eats something this large. Burt

Maybe we should do a GTG on July 10 at Cabelas?!?!?! Burt

Will probably book with Beaverland and will rent their boats so stuck with Martin Lake, Bruce, and McPhee. We'll give it a go and see what happens.... Burt

Since I am not able to do a Martin River trip like last June, I want to book a 4 day weekend in the fall. What is a good time for this area? I am thinking October, either the weekend before or after Thanksgiving.... Is this a good time for pickerel and smallmouth in that area? Thanks, Burt

Photobucket Bandwidth Limit? What is the Solution?
Burtess replied to Aaron Shirley's topic in General Discussion
Why don't you just host the picks on Canadian Sportfishing? Or link to them there (if it is allowed on this site) since they are all in your blog on that site? Then you don't have to worry about posting them on two sites which has to be a pita. Burt -
I wear Irish Setter Wingshooter's. I have the shorter ones, 7". They are uninsulated and give very good ankle and foot support. Haven't been wet in them yet. http://hunt.irishsetterboots.com/irishsetter-shoe/807-irish-setter/807-irish-setter-hunt-mens-7-inch-boot-auburn I picked them up at Sail for around $120 on sale. Burt

Had a hankering for brisket this weekend..... NF
Burtess replied to Burtess's topic in General Discussion
This was the point after the 2nd smoke, making "burnt ends", nice and black with thick bark. This is it chopped for a snack I am eating right now lol.... This one had a very large point so I may just freeze the flat for later (wife made a big lasagna as well so too much food!!). The whole thing was on for about 12 hours at around 26-280F, but the point went back on for another 3 hours and I jacked the temp up to about 300F. Wood was cherry. Burt -

Can't get quotes to work for some reason I am having problems with pictures lately too (how big are you guys seeing them on this thread, they look way to big to me). Brian, this can be arranged! The only reason I didn't do any cooks over this last winter is when I put the smoker away after a fall smoke, I left all the vents closed. When I went to pull it out in January it was a carpet of green inside, had to wait for warm weather to scrub it all out. It is an 18", I know they have made the larger ones for a few years now, but I just noticed that they make a smaller one too, although I wouldn't want one any smaller than this. Separated the point from the flat last night and put the point back on to make "burnt ends". Burt -

Coming along nicely.... Burt -
So I had a hankering for brisket this weekend and stopped a couple places on the way home last night. First was Whole Foods Market in Oakville. So I see some highly trimmed briskets (grass fed blah blah) in the meat case and notice the price... $2.29, and I think wow awesome... then I look closer... per 100 grams!!!! Yeah not! Hit up Lococos and got a 14 pounder for $4 a pound and its CAB... so we are talking high select or into prime territory here, not a bad deal and on she goes this morning...... Burt
