  11. Well with just a few more sleeps until the opening of bass fishing season throughout much of southern Ontario, thousands of bass anglers are anxious to begin fishing for their favorite species once again. Bass are typically the last species to open … and for many, it has been a long wait since their season closed November 30th 2011 (in Lake Simcoe and throughout the rest of Fisheries Management Zone 16). This year many anglers will be eager to try a relatively new rig while pursuing bass in Ontario. There was some debate among these anglers as to how legal this rig was, so we have developed the attached fact sheet to help set the record straight for recreational anglers. This MNR fact sheet can be distributed as you like or readers can check it out on the MNR site (by week’s end) at www.mnr.gov.on.ca and typing in the words Umbrella Rig under the search engine. The Umbrella Rig Quick Facts: · The Umbrella rig, also known as the Alabama rig, was used to win a large bass fishing tournament in Alabama in October 2011. This is now one of the most sought-after pieces of tackle in the bass-fishing community both here in Ontario and throughout the United States. · The rig consists of a hard body with a line-tie followed by five wire strands in a fan design, each with a snap swivel at the end. Anglers can attach a variety of lures to each swivel for a look that is meant to imitate a school of baitfish. · In Ontario, it is illegal to fish with a line that has more than four hooks attached. The original Alabama rig with five hooks or lures attached is not permitted for use in the province, but one modified to four strands or arms to accommodate only four hooks is allowed.
  12. OFAH supports motion to hold recreational fishing summit Concerns about recently erected "no fishing" signs on city property along the Toronto waterfront were addressed on Tuesday. City Council Executive Committee approved a motion by Councillor Paula Fletcher that recognizes the importance of sport fishing, and directs City staff to remove the signs. Toronto City Council must approve the recommendation made by the Executive Committee on July 11, 2012. This issue came to a head when city staff put up signs banning fishing along the waterfront without consultation with council or stakeholders. "The OFAH appreciates the efforts of Councillor Paula Fletcher and Councillor Adam Vaughan for their leadership on this issue. On behalf of our members, we sent a strongly worded letter of support to Councillor Fletcher and the members of the Executive Committee, urging them to adopt her motion," said Greg Farrant, Manager of Government Affairs and Policy. "The OFAH is particularly pleased to support the creation of a fishing summit and looks forward to participating in future discussions around fishing in the City of Toronto, including issues around fishing access on properties controlled by other agencies and levels of government." The Executive Committee recommends that: City Council request the General Manager of Parks, Forestry and Recreation, with assistance from the Waterfront Secretariat and Waterfront Toronto, to arrange a "Fishing Summit" on shoreline fishing within the central waterfront, with representation from local anglers, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Toronto Region Conservation Authority, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Harbourfront Centre, Ontario Place, Toronto Port Authority, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, and other relevant stakeholders.
  13. I dont give a --- about peoples beliefs of superstitions.. its unbelievable... its about reasonableness.. that to me .. is certainly ill informed , moronic and unreasonable.
  14. I just dont understand.. isnt that some sort of environmental terrorism... these guys take a few salmon out of season... Three Salmon Poachers Net $3,300 In Fines NEWS June 12, 2012 Three Greater Toronto Area residents have been fined a total of $3,300 for illegal salmon fishing at Bowmanville Creek in Clarington. Vladimir Mihalenja and Alexandre Chablinski of Richmond Hill and Magamed Magomedov of Toronto pleaded guilty to netting salmon on Bowmanville Creek and were each fined $1,100. In addition to the fines, their fishing nets, chest waders and flashlights were permanently forfeited to the Crown. The court heard that on the night of September 22, 2011, conservation officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources found the men netting salmon at Bowmanville Creek in Clarington. The officers saw Mihalenja and Magomedov scooping up the salmon with landing nets and saw Chablinski killing the fish by stamping on them with his boots. Justice of the Peace Maxine Coopersmith heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Whitby on June 6, 2012." ------ and that's more of a fine than intentionally releasing an invasive species into our waters??? ..I don't understand??? Why didn't they just put a couple of barrels of diesel in the river??? Maybe thats less of a fine too?? I dunno... im just a bit infuriated here???
  15. Releasing Supermarket Fish Into Rouge River Leads To Fines Two Greater Toronto Area residents have been fined a total of $1,000 for releasing live fish into the Rouge River, in the City of Toronto. Li Zhang of Toronto and Zhuolun Zhang of Markham pleaded guilty to releasing live fish into the Rouge River. They were each fined $500. The court heard that on March 3, 2012, a member of the public was walking in Rouge Park when he observed a man and woman carrying buckets of fish from a vehicle to the river. The man approached the couple and explained that it was illegal to release the fish into the river. The couple ignored the warning and the incident was reported to the Ministry of Natural Resources TIPS hotline. A conservation officer subsequently located and charged the man and woman involved. The fish had been purchased at a supermarket for the purpose of being released to the wild. The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds the public that it is illegal to deposit live fish into any body of water other than the body of water from which they came. The illegal release of live fish poses a significant threat to Ontario's environment, and could result in the introduction of harmful diseases and invasive species. Justice of the Peace Ruby Wong heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto on June 7, 2012. To report a natural resources violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
