  1. well, another report! went fishing just outside of dunnville on the welland river/chippewa creek. made 3 trips out here, should have taken more pictures... but i didn;t, next time i will! lol. anyways, went out to take a look as my buddy said it was a nice spot to get into some fish. so we went out, and boy was he right. we slammed the crappies all day long!! didn;t take any pics, as they were all fairly small, a few bigger ones in the mix though, but we had the numbers game goin that day! the first time we were there was May 8th, but still had a handful of ppl fishing above the falls for walleye, with a few being caught, and under my watchful eye, they were promptly released. now, a surprise for myself, fishing below the rapids, i hooked into a decent pike, only my second ever and a new PB! lol, don;t get too excited, it was nuthin special. but a nice treat and my first of the year. mixed in the bag was a ton of crappie, some pumpkinseeds, the pike, and a few catfish. made for a fun day for the girlfriend and myself. gorgeous day out, couldn;t ask for anythin better. up where the guys were fishing for the walleye, a couple bass were caught as well, with one being a real hawg! this largie was easily pushing 5lbs!! it was a beauty, but, OSS so it was also quickly released. went back a few days later to try for some now, in season walleye and some more crappies! well, weather was a bit cooler and windier then the last time, and this time, the BUGS came out to play!! fishing was a little tougher. figured out the crappie after a few minutes of playin around and started gettin some. so, Ashley, my lovely girlfriend, was fishing them, as i went above the rapids to try for some eyes! well, no luck with the eyes, did get a couple small largemouth for my efforts on a small jig with a berkley gulp minnow on it. Ashley also got a small bass too. so, back down the the crappies, then, i got adventurous and headed along the river bank to get to a couple fish holding spots, put a dead minnow on as we had a couple, and tried for some channel cats, and sure enough, my spots payed off as i landed a few small ones, then.. and keep in mind i;m on a bank, 6 feet above the water that goes straight down into the river, i drop my line down, and as soon as it hit the water, bam, float goes under! so, as i proceed to set the hook and what i expect is a channel cat from the undercut bank, the fish doesn;t move, so i;m thinkin, ok, i got a big one here... and off she runs, straight out to the middle of the river. so i yell to ashley to get me the net as i fight it, now garnering some attention from a few fellow anglers around us. after a 10 minute fight, and me climbing around some trees and playin monkey man tryin not to lose this fish in a brush pile it ran around, i finally get down to where i can land it. so, i get the net, scoop the fish, and see... scales... ok, its a big carp... or is it? muahaha. sorry... so, i pull it up and my buddy asks, what is it... and my response... i have no idea! i;ve never seen this fish before in my life. so, we get it on the bank where i can look at it, and an older gentleman comes over and without missing a beat... thats a "Big Mouth Buffalo" well, i have heard of them, never seen or caught one before, so this was kinda exciting now! get a weight of him and a couple pics, and back to the water! 9.87 Lbs on the scale and one more for the road. he said it was only the second one hes ever seen around here, only other was years before down in the niagara river. later learned they are not native to our waters, but are quite common in the U.S. went back again a couple days ago, and again, was not a fun day to be out, windy, cold, some rain. fish were not cooperating at all, couldn;t buy a strike, so i let Ashley keep tryin for crappie and i wondered off to find fish hiding in cover. managed to get a small bluegill then moved to the upper part of the river to try for some eyes again, well, after gettin a few bites in the same area, i finally for a big hit and a hookup! was i finally goin to get my first ever walleye?!? lol, no, i was not... rite after gettin a solid hookset, i was bitten off by a rather large pike. was using 8lb mono, it hit on a tube jig rigged texas style to avoid all the snags there. tied on a new jig head 1/8oz and a gulp minnow, landed a 1lb largie and that was it. lots of birds flying around, was kinda creepy. lol. i'll be back there soon for some more fishing, and be sure to have more pictures.
  2. WOW those were some amazing bass! so, who wants to take a trip down to Cali?!?! am i the only one doubting the 20lb fish though?? i mean, from my point of view, it looked to be about the same size as some of the other ones showed, not to mantion it was swimming away and we wer not able to see its true size and girth. just my thoughts.
  3. 905-701-6874 fishmasters bait and tackle. u can camp there for $25 per nite, rite on the waters edge. 24 hour bait available and a boat launch as well.
  4. don;t feel too bad rich, most of the ppl out on the weekend couldn;t get a sniff from a walleye! i seen 4 all weekend. all nice eaters, but no one had anythin over 2lbs my buddy got his 2 on jigs, another guy i know got 2 trolling cranks on the opener. most fish came from shallow water.
  5. Gerritt, just curious to know the name of the doctor that treated u??
  6. if its just a broken scaphoid, u'll be fine, i did the exact same thing playin football, i opten to skip the surgery. they pins are just a couple small ones to hold the bone together while it heals, they may remove then later on, they may not. but either way once its healed it won;t affect u. u'll get the stiffness and some mild pain, thats normal, i broke mine severely over 5 years ago, and it still gets a little sore. but i have no serious problems with it. i was able to continue playing football and baseball while it was healing, no the smartest, but i;m a gamer! lol. after the surgery,. take at least a week, i not 2, before u try and handle a rod and reel my friend. and don;t go crazy, listen to ur body, if u feel it and u know ur body is tellin u to stop or slow down, do it. take it slow, last thing u want is to take a 6 week healing period and make it 10-12 because u pushed it to hard or did somethin stupid. good luck bud.
  7. nice work bud! nice to meet ya too!! (i was the guy with the kid driving the red jeep) i'll be down there in the morning if ya wanna come down and try for some toothy critters!
  8. some hook companies make specialized dropshot hooks in various sizes. but really depends on the amout of weeds ur fishing in and type and size of fish ur after. my opinion, i owuldn;t be dropshotting in heavy weeds.
  9. once u have your 2 fish, everything u catch after that must be released. u can still fish after u have ur limit, but u must release any fish caught after u have ur 2 keepers. in addition, even fish u have at home in a fridge or freezer counts towards ur limit. so, legally if u have 2 fish in the freezer, u are NOT allowed to keep anymore till u have eaten the ones in the freezer.
  10. the lighter the line, the more u have to play the fish to land it, so it just depends how much u wanna fight it. just have a large line capacity as they can get over 40lbs and when they wanna go, u wont stop them. just use corn. works the best, u can even chum a place u wanna fish for a couple days, at the same time each day and the fish will come back, if u make and keep a patternn, they will remember it and come back at that time.
  11. well, went out to Dunnville to do some fishing for channel cats, but the river was a write off, very high winds causing havoc on the river made it impossible to try and fish it. so, plan B was to go and try for some Panfish, crappie, bluegill... just for some fun. so, off to my panfish spot. its just a small creek in a park 5 minutes from Fishmasters. so, we get there, take a look and get set up. after a few minutes i get a snag and break off my rig. so, back to the truck to get a new one, as i;m walkin back to the creek my girlfriend yells at me she has one on. well, it wasn;t a panfish, but its better then a skunk! lol. Ashley with a catfish so, i decide to try somethin different, and tied on a small inline spinner, i believe it was a 1/8oz size and a shiner pattern. i then proceeded to pound the shore line, casting to weeds and sunken timber, overhanging trees. this creek is SNAG CITY! so, after several casts, finally a hookup! baby OSS Largemouth after a quick picture he swam off, soon after i hooked into another one. i then got a decent bluegill on the end of a sunken log. did not get a pic of the bluegill. kept moving along the shore, blind casting, and casting to the visible structure and cover. not long and another hook up!! this time, a little weight to it... after a small battle, i get to see a nice sized largie. puts up a fun fight on a 5'6" med action rod with 6# mono. finally land her and after a quick smile for the camera, off she swims. she was a good 2.5-3lbs. i got one more small one after that to end the day. all Bass were released quickly and swam off to fight another day. I was NOT targeting Bass as we all know they are currently out of season until the last saturday in june. the panfish were just not biting that day. i came back the next evening and landed a few bluegills with one being a nice big one. seen a few cats caught, as well as a small carp and a crappie.
  12. my sons first catfish first time me, my dad and son went fishing together and watchin my son tryin to hold a pike... lol every picture u have is special for one reason or another. can never pic just one
  13. take a tennisball, and cut a small slit in it. then, pack it full of peanut butter. toss it to the dof, he'll be too preoccupied tryin to get the peanut butter out he won;t care about u, once he gets the peanut butter, he'll be too busy tryin to get it off the roof of his mouth to bark! if all else fails, u could fill it with anti freeze. lol. i;m sorry, i love dogs but that was funny. and anyone who has had to deal with a barking dog knows that no matter how much u love the animal, there is a point where u wanna just shoot it.
  14. if the islands are in the lake, they would be considered park of the lake and be zone 16. but, they like to screw around with the regs so ur best bet is to just call the MNR and ask them directly.
  15. i've used them, have a few different sizes and colors. caught a couple large mouth on the bigger size. haven;t used the smaller ones yet, but will this summer. i;ve also noticed the eyes fall off easily. i find it VERY hard to keep it in the rite part of the water colum i want to fish it, i seen on ads where they would jig it, or swim it on or near bottom... not an easy task, but as stated, deadly over top of weed bed and on lily pads as a surface bait.
  16. the fish won;t digest it all, but once the hook it self rusts it'll fall out fairly quickly. it happens a lot faster then u might think. and the fish have ways of gettin the hooks to come out as well. its far better to leave it in, and allow it to come out in time, then try and get it out cause u WILL kill the fish if u start twisting things around with some pliers.
  17. not to bad, good price. BUT, if u wanna get ur moneys worth, spend a little more when it comes to a baitcaster, u won;t be disappointed. try one of these http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...0003000_100-3-1 http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...0003000_100-3-1 buddy of mine just got the daiwa megaforce and loves it. and i;ve used the shimano citica and its a very nice reel as well. take a look, both also come with very good rods as part of the combo.
  18. Quantum Tour edition rod. lots of lengths and actions. u can get obe for about 70 bucks. or look on ebay, u can get one for 40 bucks, i own 3 of them, great rods. theres are not the PT rods, but they are still very good rods
  19. both are catfish. billheads are much smaller then channel cats. bullheads rarely grow past 2-2.5 lbs. but are nice eating fish. channel cats grow much larger and are the largest catfish we have around here. they commonly grow over 15lbs and its not uncommon to catch 20+ lbs fish. theres even some 30+lbs fish roaming the river.
  20. the cats are in there year round. they're hitting good rite now, but u can catch them in the summer time too. come to the shop and you'll be sent in the rite direction!
  21. i still remember that last race to this day as if it happened yesterday....
  22. take a trip down to Dunnville in about 3 weeks. u'll ve gettin consistant 15lbers and even a few over 20-25lbs. and they'll be east to get well into summer.
  23. The energy PT is an outstanding reel! have not yet used a daiwa casting reel as of yet, but have has plenty of experience with their spinning gear over the years. both are good choices. I personally am a quantum guy, so i would say the Energy PT would be a good choice. also, if u wanna save a few extra bucks and still get a great reel the quantum accurist PT is another very good reel for a good price.
  24. still lots of ice down there my friend. another couple weeks and it should be good!
