I could do without 'future generations' of bass around here. Considering noone fishes for them up here anyway, It'd be nice to have a year round season with reduced trout and walleye limits, and help cull some of the lakes where they've 'invaded' (introduced).

I bought the sled and tow bar. Looks to be a nice sled package but the cover they sell for it for 30 bucks is a rip off. I'll be making my own.

Given your situation (bun in the oven and your first property) I'd say a lessened interest in fishing is the wrong way of putting it. Your priorities are right where they should be. I'll be picking up the slack, dont worry.

I just hook them once on a small treble for set lines. Works great. On a lot of lakes you can ice fish them just like brookies, I find.

Spent a lazy Sunday beatin' round the snowy bush checking out the ice on my local lakes... Could've taken the sled out but the heavy chevy is fun in the deep stuff too. Probably the last time she'll be pokin' around the backwoods till the spring. Took the axe and hiked into a couple small trout potholes. Most of these lakes are heavily spring-fed meaning lots of unsafe ice which will likely remain unsafe for quite a while. Don't assume because your favourite trout lake is small it will freeze quicky. On the way home I squeezed in an hour before dark on a shallower stream-fed splake lake. Found 3.5-4 good inches close to shore, but all this early snow has messed up things up with lots of soft spots, but the girlfriend put a nice trout on the ice right before dark in 4 FOW. I think i'll stick with the sled for the next week or two. Dont come up north expecting good ice everywhere.

There's safe ice to be had around here, but also no shortage of dangerous ice. I'll try my hand for some small-lake specks this weekend but will wait at least another week for anything larger. It's gonna be a looong season, and i'm in no hurry

If you plan on not travelling from the huts then yes. Most operators will not move their shacks throughout the season and are in easier access areas. Early January is pretty much great everywhere!!

Tough to say chris. I live a few hours north of huntsville but we will certainly have plenty of ice by that time (smaller lakes).

What it really boils down to is peoples sensitivity to death...no point in getting upset about people that cannot handle seeing such things...hell i hunt and fish and i'd have a hard time doing 'the deed'. That being said it was definitely the right thing to do and am confident both those ridiculous charges will be dropped. The sensationalization of this story is unbelievable...feel sorry for the guy!

The Waltonian offers great huts in okay fishing areas but dont have bungalows. They do however have awesome cabins and a great main lodge with awesome food and entertainment. I would reccomend them for the overall experience, but for strictly fishing go with Hyatt! Early season his hut locations produce great fishing and youll be well looked after.

No line twist issues when youre jigging laker size baits. I definitely prefer baitcasters in deepwater situations and just use my old Daiwa crankbait reel in the winter. I dont see the point in buying an 'ice' baitcaster, especially since most of them seem to be of low quality
