Big changes on the bow mounted trolling motor front!
AKRISONER replied to David Chong's topic in General Discussion
Dave that TM literally looks like everything that I thought a trolling motor in 2019 should be. Very very impressive. To be honest, I really havent heard anything but bad things about the Ultrex. Broken stearing cables, shafts breaking just weird stuff. Plus lets get serious, Humminbird/Minkotta has completely missed the bus with their lack of wireless tech. Its 2019, getting people to hardwire ethernet cables into their boat is ridiculous. I am sure some people may still prefer a wired pedal, but getting your Sonar GPS Unit to talk to your trolling motor wirelessly, when it already speaks to its remote wirelessly should be pretty much a given? Brushless motors basically means that these Trolling Motors will never die, or at least 30 years from now you are going to probably want an upgrade anyways. Im a humminbird guy myself, and it will be a long while until I can afford an ultrex. But Minkotta is going to have a hard time selling trolling motors when Garmin how now brought trolling motors out of the early 2000's and up to 2020. Time will now tell if the units can be considered reliable and cross talk between other boats nearby etc doest become an issue. This looks very very impressive and im envious of the fact that it sounds like you will be fishing one of these very soon.- 36 replies

those largies are gonna be eating frogs!

really eh? Im definitely going to do that! THanks for the advice, I guess I should have assumed that they might, I have had incredible service with Humminbird/minkotta (Johnson outdoors) so Im not too surprised to hear that Rapala is great as well.

i never had confidence in the jig until this year when i just decided to force myself to use it until i caught fish because if its that notoriously famous its gotta work...sure enough, all of sudden you are like wow, this bait that i never though could work is actually one of the most simple yet versatile ways to fish, you can flip jigs into absolute crap, or fish em deep. They catch big fish, they catch small fish even though they seem huge. Ive been loving throwing brown with blue with a nice craw trailer. I use craws with the floating claws, it just gives it that extra wobble when it hits the ground.

flippin a tungsten punch weight into timber. Yes both species were up extremely shallow with that cold water still everywhere. Prior to this year I had never truly done any punching and flipping, It had always been throwing worms and tubes, id never done the true bobber stop, weight, texas rigged creature style bait punching before and sure enough it immediately has become one of my favourite ways to fish, especially for largemouth it really heavy cover its really fun. Had a moment during a derby on opener where i flipped into some tall grass and felt a thump and saw what i at first thought was a 10lb largemouth...it was just a big old carp that knocked my line ahahaha. I am enjoying it a lot though.

Can’t wait to get back up and get back on em, even with the heat they are still eating, just a little deeper.

Definitely knew about the crappie tourneys the Americans down south are intense. The guys in Alabama we’re fishing them on spider rigs and especially at night with big LED set ups all stuff that’s not even legal in canada. down in South Carolina they punch for em on huge poles. I’d never seen anything like it, punching heavy surface vegetation (maybe hyacin *spelling I have no clue) with a float and a 10 foot noodle rod. Rods, tackle, etc id never ever seen before seeing it in person.

Is that your catch or someone else’s on a different forum. Either way that’s a solid day on the water. Forget the numbers that is some serious size.

I quite literally had no idea that perch tournaments existed, I know there’s “perch festivals” and “perch derbies” where you either catch tagged perch, or i guess there may be a prize for a biggest fish, but they have always just been kind of free for all’s. Kids categories etc etc i had no idea there were FLW MLF BASS BFL bass style tournaments for perch.
-
I was not aware a perch tournament existed? Is it catch and release like a bass tournament? Artificial bait only?
-
Bill as sad as it is, tyee on the west coast used to be 50lbs as well and now it’s 30. That’s an insane difference!

Sure ruffled a few feathers with the light chirps at Erie lol holy cow. big Walleye, and smallies you say eh? I think everyone knows this? It’s one of, if not the warmest of the Great Lakes? Resulting in increased metabolic rates and bigger fish. Wait did you just make my argument for me? Lol relax guys. You can have Lake Erie and share it with the Americans, enjoy! love the “get out of the kawarthas” comment. If I fished anymore lakes than I already do then I’d definitely lose my job and my girlfriend hahaha

I’m using the rapala digital tournament scale with the culling bins, I swapped the “clamp” that comes with it for an actual fish lip gripper because I found my bass we’re flying off of they flailed, haven’t had an issue since re:that now my only issue is that for some reason my batteries like to periodically slip out of place. They are still in, but are ever so slightly out of place resulting in my scale not working. It’s actually a bit of a PITA when I’m trying to tag and cull in a tournament and my scale randomly turns off. I’m considering figuring out a way to tape the batteries in so that they can’t move as much.

Can we really trust guys that choose to fish that featureless puddle above all of the other lakes in Ontario though? I personally have never seen rod holders on a bass boat.

Prior to owning my boat winter was my favourite season up there. It’s so quiet but beautiful and pristine. Almost makes me want to go back...almost

couldnt be more wrong lol depending on the season I go from Ice fishing for crappies, to fishing for pike and walleye, then to bass, the odd laketrout trip mixed in, Then fly fishing for salmon and trout in rivers, then back to walleye and musky, then ice fishing pike, then ice fishing walleye and laketrout and rinse repeat. When was the last time you rigged up rod holders on a bass boat? It can be done its not ideal. Thats what my aluminum is for.

cant troll...

not sure anyone has ever cashed a cheque catching perch, live bait or not
-
really? I feel like its the opposite? Ive noticed the trend is that I am seeing way more bass boats than I have ever seen.

Solid report, and some solid fish
-
talking to my neighbor thats lived in the area since the 50's the fishing now is the best it has ever been in his life. Thats really saying something.
-
lolll i dont know a single person under the age of 50 that would even consider eating a musky hahaha. not surprisingly it was that crazy polish guy Henry Waszchuk that had a musky recipe in his personal recipe book lmao. As Taro Murata said when he found out my family and I were polish but were cool with releasing the majority of our fish "I thought caught fish is polish steak" I still honestly wonder what is going to happen to the fishing industry when all of the guys that grew up or lived in the 80's the era of actual fishing boats and the explosion of technique and target specific gear showed up on the market for the first time are gone. The mentality is just so vastly different. All you have to do is look at the guys that fish walleye up near my place every fall. The older guys grew up keeping everything have somewhat learned to let a few go from time to time, while the younger crowd may take one fish if they really care to filet it. Then you have musky fishing. There are definitely a few younger guys that are really into it, but when you are talking about the large majority of anglers under the age of 35, most are bass fishing these days, the population of walleye anglers is falling off of a cliff.
-
ill admit, im a bit of a nutcase when it comes to tackle, yes i use $30 lures to catch bass and rods...too expensive than i care to admit lol. But all of that I thought was crazy until i bought my bass boat. just a game changer when it comes to dropping cash. Believe it or not I used to catch bass out of a 14 foot tinner with a retrofitted casting deck and a basic minkotta power drive...but lets get serious ripping across the lake at 100kmh and seeing clouds of bait on down imaging just makes everything more fun. I seriously wonder though, is the musky and perhaps even the walleye industry a dying breed as less and less people are catching to eat regularly? I personally think that the boat industry is on a course of destruction with the prices of boats these days. Yes i get it, the boomers have a pile of money and equity that they gathered while things were good, but for a 30 year old, owning a 100,000 bass boat while houses start at a half million dollars is a pipe dream. Not sure what the future holds, but I think the fishing industry is in for a massive massive change in the very near future, infact in a lot of ways I think it has already started with it really showing in Canada where walleye and pike ruled for a long time, and now people are thinking more about fishing bass. Can you blame people though? Id rather catch 10 smallies over walleye any day of the week. Talk to anyone my age that fishes and only a few have the patience to fish musky, and even then its a "special occasion" type deal. Maybe our attention spans just arent of that of our predecessors
