Remember a trip when my dad and uncle took me and my brother pickerel fishing , and between pics we caught some fair size WGSF , my uncle kept all the larger WGSF as well as some pics .When luch time came ,it was the WGSF that he filleted and said we would save the pics for a BBQ with mom when we got home but the WGSF would be lunch ?? WAS I EVER surprised at how good they tasted . Ever since whenever my son and I caught some big ones into the pan they went , but as headhunter said ,the water must be clean and cold ,as too many times in shallow places like the bog we get the black spots and just let them be .Maybe one day at lakeair or such we can put together a mixed bag lunch of different fish and do a taste off ???? I think rockies and crappie will more than hold their own on the palate against their Pickerel and trout brothers.

I thought I was done here but I will try again . First let me tell you the best tip I ever have recieved is the return Business of some of my 10+ years custermers these guys who come back year after year is the best tip I can recieve. As Jen said I NEVER EXPECT to be tipped , I have not caught a salmon myself yet this year and of all the hundreds of fish that went into the box last year maybe one or two were mine , I learned a long time ago I love the hunt ,I love finding the fish ,day in day out, all kinds of condishions, the fun comes when the plan comes together and I see the faces of the people who truely in joy the chance to catch a fish of a life time (and on my boat you have that chance), THATS MY TIP !!! Now for the deck hand he spends all day (most days if we do a double it will be 14 hours )with people he dosnt know and would never met otherwise and he gets paid a fair wage for it (IM not cheap I pay fare) yes BUT he can make or break a trip . How about getting thrown up on by a seasick custermer whos allso not your idea of a GREAT GUY, hooked in the leg arm or ass, cleaning up an accident in the head,or he can help you land that fish of a life time etc etc I can tell boat stories all day,and if he miss netts your PB !!! . FOR THIS OVER AND ABOVE he USUALLY gets tipped (as I said I hire students from sir sanfod fleming takeing fishers courses , I give them a room aboard the boat for the summer to live and they get first hand experence with fish and can earn money for school)He does not expect to be tipped but I will tell you HE APPRECiATES every cent of it ,(would he do a lesser job if he wasnt tipped ,NO NO NO and more NO not on my boat) as for the amount I dont think it matters to him as much as the fact he got tipped ,that his job was 110 percent ie better than just what you paid for and was reconized , if you do tip ,tip what you feel is fare. AND as an aside for GERRITT I tipped the guy who built my deck , he did a great job over and above what we had agreed (a ffair price at the time but when I saw the finished job I was so impressed) and i grave him a few hundred more for a job well done , I thought it was fair.

Sinker has the fishing got better or just the CATCHING as the small numbers left have had their habitant shrunk and now their easy to catch as they stack up in the few places left that suit them and the lack of food makes them more likely to bite anything???? used to sit on my dock in the 70's and catch 10- 15 eyes in an hour or so havent caught one there in three years but crappies on the otherhand we catch almost every cast some days as I said im not a biolagist but watching the film that was posted there was one there and he seamed to say the same as terry as one pop grows others MUST shrink.

that would be Corneria , the stuff that comes out after eating too much corn lol. My eyes salute him allso

unreal the amount of talent on this board , GREAT JOB Cliff .

Dont think a large population of crappies is good if you like walleyes and bass, Im no biologist but I have fished the tri lakes for 50 years and I see as pickerel and bass numbers declined crappie numbers grew . Zebra muscles and the clearing of the water might have helped in the crappies favor but I think all those pickerel fry in the crappies bellies had alot to do with it . 25 years ago you never even heard of crappie unless you were from down south or maybe the georgiann bay area and the pickerel fishing in rice lake was great , jumbo pearch were in fact JUMBO not 7-8 inches, another invasive species probably brought into the lakes in a fishermens bait bucket , just a better tasteing gobie to me or a cormorant with fins .

Was wondering where he was havent seen him around for awile (thought maybe he was in jail LOl ). Say hello and what a cute child (cant believe i wrote that ,but its true) must have come from the wifes side of the gene pool. Hard to believe but there are other things more important than fishing, but ALEX has found one it looks like, but I bet she looks even cuter with a fishing rod in her hands .

Stoty why would you hire me if I didnt have all the best stuff??? been in the biz a long time customers pay for the best ,alot of fly by nighters come and go all the time,Im still around . I dont get tips usually ,the deck hand does allmost all the time (hes real good at what he does and lots of days he puts more money in his pocket then me, I get students from sir sanford fleaming every year and they live aboard and work on the boat all summer) but i have custermers from all around the world and one guy comes from Australria and pays 1200 for the boat all day for himself and his wife and he has tipped me 1000 more if we do good ,all kinds of people, BUT LIKE DAWG SAID , you got to EARN IT . One thing about fishing 7 days a week all season is ITS A JOB and ITS A HARD job when you gurentee fish day in and day out , I start at 4:30 am getting the boat ready and dont finish untill 10 0r 11 by the time the boat is cleaned and put away for the night EVERY DAY (I average 200 paid trips a year ), seen myself work all night fixing something if it cant wait. Its the dream job for me for sure and I love it but you your comment " 100 dollars an hour for fishing "seam like its MONEY FOR NOTHING thats for rock stars not fishing bums lol .And the other guy I run 4 riggers off the back and two on the side plus two 30 foot outriggers I have a 40 foot boat and I will gladly show you any bills for rods and reels I wish I could go back to trailing a boat to the dock but with gas now how you gonna make any money takeing out 2 or three guys guess you dont dock down town do ya , trade ya for a week.

Stoty try - 150,000 for boat , 500 for a rod and reel set x10 ,8 electric riggers and holders 10,000, another 10,000 in tackle and baits , 4,000 for summer dock , 3,000 for winter storage , + insurence +finders +gps +radar ++ I dont do it to get rich thats for sure , two 440 enginines and if I have learned anything about boats in the 30 odd yers Ive been in the biz if it can break ,it WIILL average 8,000 in maintance and repairs for the season and with two 250 gallon tanks you dont want to see the fuel bills , I would go broke if I took my boat out for 350 that would hardly cover the gas for a full day ??????? some guys just dont get it

Can anyone give me some tips on stream fishing?
capt bruce replied to BillM's topic in General Discussion
I keep a box of micro baits ,00 spinners, tiny spoons , tiny rapallas etc. and just because you dont have a fly rod you can still bounce wet flies with a small split shot or behind a tiny spoon or spinner thru a pool or under a clear tiny float, I smoke so I like to light a cigar and sit and watch a pool for awile and try to figure out the feeding lanes and than try to present my bait the most naturel way down these food highways and ya you can be surprised at some of the larger fish that live in these streams ,good luck and stealth is important as theses fish spook easy. -
Lucile? is bb king's guitar

Ran them last fall on the St lawernce and lake st clair took a few fish . Fish them like Lew does with his belivers , allmost a surface bait , Im a fan of jointed shallow lures if you work them right they can kick up a lot of noise.I have no so called "go-to bait" ?? I have lots of baits (the custermers love them ) and use whatever suits the condishions for the day ,lots of time custermers bring baits and I let them run what ever the want , but I cant count how many times a guy wants to run his so called "go-to" that he caught his PB with in completely different condishions time of year depth etc. and wonders why it didnt come thu this time , he figures he wasnt lucky or the fish were'nt biteing ??? never understood this go to bait thing ,if a bait tracks right runs at the depth I want etc. , IT WILL WORK . SO many more inportant things when your job is putting fish on custermers lines than the BRAND OF BAIT your running , type yes .

Never a fan of socks , I use the electric for boat control - I thought thats what it was for- never understood why some call them trolling motors ?"? never trolled with mine but its great for boat control and with 70 lbs thrust holds me in most winds , if it will not hold my in position the lakes to rough to fish anyway

used pesticide tank ,think i will put water in there ????, AHHHH TJ ya sure ya want to store your water in something like that ,- but Honey it was cheap , and the new baby sure gets a lot of use from that third arm . I would Never pull that off with my wife !!!! sorry boss I couldnt resist Im sure all will be good ... -
I like 50 lb power pro and 80 lb floro leader on all my pike rods , The braid sets the hook into those toothy jaws no problem and the floro leader makes sure of no bite offs .

Targetting Walleyes in Shallow Lakes
capt bruce replied to Reef Runner's topic in General Discussion
You can get the little spinner baits, I think mister twister makes one and make your jig a little more weedless , but on the bog in about the same condishions we have good success ripping the jigs thu the weeds ,like was said its a hard days fishing but all my large eyes from the bog have come this way. Night fishing around docks and any open areas allso will pay off as these fish tend to leave their weed homes to feed only in the night on these shallow lakes . good luck -
Good to hear ya had a good time . Give the slow death hooks another chance , with half a night crawler or we had good results with a 4" gulp minnow and a bottom bouncer, go slow - less that 1mph - you will be pleased with the hook ups ,way better than a straight hook (but ya got to get the fish to hit first, seams like this week end they needed some extra flash for ya , maybe a blade and some beads on the leader before the swivel might have helped?

A little late . Ive been watching the pike in the harbor all spring and most of the large ones are gone for the summer some smaller ones still in the weed beds around ontario place and wards island but its a mater of you should of been there a few weeks ago .Lots of carp moveing in to spawn now and some bull heads . There are a population of smaller pike that stay all summer at the islands but the large spawners are gone .
-
I got mine so long ago, they give you the study material than you went down to the marine unit and took the test . I will recommend you get one , they can see the whole harbor from their tower at the foot of spandina , and as soon as you enter the harbor you will be watched , and if you dont look like you know what your doing (ie speed -slow and slower NEVER go faster than a trol or they will be right on you , they have a very fast boat , cutting off the farie , going any where near the farie will get you big trouble , and THE BLOW BOATS -never understood a boat you had to blow on to get it to move AHHHH - they treat the islands and inner harbor as if its theirs -maybe because it is ??? - they will report you for just about anything , There are lots of rules about boating in harbors and you will have to know about bouys -colors and shapes and what each ones mean etc. , right of ways , speed limits, safty things I cant rember it all , its a good test for all boaters .
-
just think of carp as RUSTY STEEL
-
Probably like a red and white spoon more and its not as messy and smelly lol never understood fishing pike with bait when they chase down just about anything shiny this time of year ??? just seams like more fun and you get that dropping jaw when a biggun follows right to the boat
