aplumma replied to DRIFTER_016's topic in General Discussion
Wind chill is a myth made up by man to exaggerate cold weather. lol I actually can do weather both warm and cold but I try to avoid outdoors when the hair in my nose freezes when I breath. Now let it get up into 90s F plus and I am good all day long. Good luck with the cold cold cold weather. Art- 29 replies

I have to get a new hot water tank, looking for advice NF
aplumma replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
I hear you I am not a fan of oil fired water heaters. I have avoided them like the plaque. The big issue is the smell of the diesel fuel and the soot. It gets all over the place and it never can be removed completely from the house. The HE water heaters are usually around twice the cost of the old style heaters but will pay for themselves fairly quickly. The only advantage the non HE has is it does not pump the surrounding air out of the room it is installed in and in most cases it is air that has already been heated by a furnace. The more often the heater runs the greater loss of heated air occurs. The newest generation of Air heaters have raised the efficiency of the heaters by drawing cold air from outside for the combustion chamber thus not sending heated air out the flue. The water heater has not been able to be designed in this manner that is cost effective. Art -

There are two styles of gas heaters. One is the high efficiency which uses a power vent (a blower motor) on the top that takes surrounding air and mixes it with the exhaust from the burner to cool it down so it can be run thru PVC. The old style or non high efficiency unit has a steel vent because it can reach temperatures that would melt plastic pipes. The liner is needed if the flue is in poor shape and decaying from acids that occur as flue gasses cool.It is not a big deal to do it is just running B vent pipe thru and up to the top of the roof. You are using the flue as a chase for the pipe. Art -

We have a saying down in Cajun Country. When water gets hard you have gone North to far. I get grumpy here in Virginia when it gets below 25 F and really don't like it when you feel the hairs in your nose freeze Art- 29 replies

While my lab was good at the cabinet noises I have a red tick coon hound that really tests the limits. I can put the dog outside eat a few jelly beans, let him back in and he will come over and look at me and then check the coffee table for his jelly bean. He has one heck of a nose for sure to watch him run the farm for scent is a pleasure to watch. Art

The drain valve is located at the bottom of the heater. There are mainly 3 types. 1 Is a draincock that has a screwdriver head on it. 2 is a draincock that has a round handle on it. 3 is a white plastic roughly 3 inch around that has a hose thread on the end of it. The third one is my guess as to the one you have. Put a garden hose on the threaded part of it and run it to a drain. By turning it counterclockwise you will be opening it go 1/2 turn past where you hear water running (Go to far and it will pop out of the heater ) thru it. Let it run till clear or 2 min. which ever comes first. Then close the valve in reverse and hope it closes and is not now full of debris. My personal guidance is if you have not been draining the heater from the start you are asking for trouble. While draining the heater will extend the life the first time the valve malfunctions due to debris you will then be paying a plumber to come out and replace the valve. I have not drained my heaters but instead replace them every 10 years so far never flooded and never fixed my own heater. Art -
AVG is a program you installed for security it is the freeware version so it will continue to ask you to buy the whole program. I personally us a purchased copy of norton for my security some like it others don't. Art

Download these two programs they are freeware and run them. Malwarebytes and CCleaner. They are designed to sweep your computer manually and remove malware and clear all of the caches your computer can get a program stuck in. They will not erase anything that your computer uses to run itself. You will lose any cookies that keep you signed in on websites so you will need to reenter the name and password for this and similar sites. Art

My favorite was the creepy crawler maker. You poured goop into a metal mold and put it on a hotplate as you leaned over it so you could smell when it was done. You then used a cheesy clip to lift it out and dunk it in to a bowl of water. Man I still remember the smell of the goop and the burn scars on my arms. Now that was a toy. Art

A pressure temp relief valve( the only safety) can malfunction and become clogged with minerals. The hour it takes to generate the pressure needed to blow is done in silence you don't know when the hour started. Once the heater gets to 212 F you got steam and that is the driving force in the explosion. It is really ugly and the generated energy is very destructive. Art -

Very dry it is scorched air so the humidity is 0. The ability to evaporate is greater the further you are from 100% humidity. See when you exercise you and generate body heat which you bleed off by sweating. A person who is at 50% humidity will have a slick or small beads of sweat while the same person will have sweat all over themselves at 75% humidity. The cooling effect is the evaporation not in the actual sweating. It is possible to be in a high humidity place and have heat stroke.( overdressed in the winter). You also can have heat stroke in a dry place if your body can not cool off by evaporation. Art

Idling will cause a build up of gas in the oil but you also are running it in cold weather and if the engine does not come up to temperature it can not evaporate the gas that gets by the rings. Art

Glad to hear Cliff. If they did put a valve on the hot and the cold line as you wanted make sure the gas is off to the heater before closing both valves. The reason we don't and down here it is against code is if you close both valves and the heater tries to generate heat it will expand the water as it heats and hopefully just trips the blow off valve. If it doesn't do that you have a bomb in the basement. Bradford white is a good heater you should be fine with it for many years. Good call on the rental with such a small amount for the repair as needed costs it is worth it. One service call down here is 100.00 for the first 1/2 hour plus parts you can burn up the 240.00 in a hurry. Art -

Anyone who is having issues with quoting please post here and tell us what browser you are using. If you know we also need what version you are using. Also please tell us if you have tried a different browser and if it still was broken. Thanks Art

Funny they say the same crap here about heat. It gets to be 102F and they ask is it a dry heat? The theory of dry heat is you can sweat faster with less resistance so you it feels cooler. Art

The rental thing has not caught on here in the US and for good reason. Total waste of money it is a rip off for the customers. Cliff A propane heater treated well will last over 10 years if there is no defects. You can purchase a 10 year warrentee heater if you want but after that few if any companies will extend past that. Here is the key if you buy the heater for $2000.00 installed you have paid $200.00 a year to use it. After 10 years if it does not leak throw it out and start over again. I like the power vent series they are rock solid and have just as good a chance to be trouble free as the older standing pilot heaters. I personally find that the tankless heater to be more of a trouble than a blessing. They need a certain amount of flow for them to trigger on meaning some water conservation showerheads or aerators can keep it from turning on. They are not easy to work on and the lack of parts availability usually means two service calls to fix it. They will leak just as easily as a tank heater and will have less life due to the high temperature that they fire on at. Example is a heater fires 48,000 BTUs while a tankless runs at 150.000 to 240.000 BTUs. The piping size to the heater is most likely to small for the tankless so that has to be added into the cost. Finally a tankless heater uses more gas..... The reason some people get out of the shower is because the water gets cold with a tankless you can stay in for as long as you have fuel. The selling point of storage of hot water is wasted heat is not really true the heat you lose from the tank is inside the house so it heats the water as well as the house. If you have any questions I haven't answered feel free to P.M. me your phone # and I will be happy to talk to you. Art
