  1. Wonder were those springs have gone? http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...tional/Ontario/ A snippet from the article about water bottling company being allowed to take water from the area: "I'm disappointed that they did not reduce their volume, nor did they address the whole issue of giving a public resource away to a private enterprise for free," said Mark Goldberg, co-founder of Wellington Water Watchers, a local activist group. The province levies a one-time $3,000 processing fee on complicated water permits that need a scientific evaluation. Beginning next year, it will charge an additional fee of $3.71 for every million litres permit holders withdraw, or $13.36 a day if Nestlé takes its full allotment. You read that right $3.71 per million litres. 3.6 million litres of water a day, every day. You think it's only big oil that's screwing you and the environment, think again.
  2. Sorry this was a poor attempt at humour. In some parts the sunfish vs bass debate almost rivals the walleye vs pickerel one. bass are sunfish, whites bass are bass, walleye are perch, lake trout are char, rainbow trout are salmon. etc, etc.
  3. My knowledge of them is almost limited to: They're not bass.
  4. Surprise, surprise. Three replies and three different preferences. That's never happened before. At least one of us is right. Kidding. I can see situations where all three would excel. Good replies. I'll have to take a look next time I'm shopping ('cause I needed another reason to spend money).
  5. It's all about the pockets for me. I still use a vest, haven't tried a chest pack yet, but I'm always looking for a better way.
  6. I've tried rolling the rods in a blanket and then using a gym bag for the reels. -worked ok I've used hard rod tubes.- still need a bag for the reels and at most 4 rods fit in the case. I'm looking for some ideas on how to transport my rods and reels. Storage at home (despite what my wife might say) is not the priority. We're talking mostly 2 piece rods, 4-6 casting and 4-6 spinning, in a 4 door car. What do you do?
  7. We're getting a bit off the topic, but I would suggest that a bigger problem for the brook trout is the impact we've (homo saps) have had on the habit that is needed for healthy brook trout streams.
  8. Quote from article: "That type of regulation, which we see in many sport fisheries, is exactly wrong," George Sugihara of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego said in a statement. "It's not the young ones that should be thrown back, but the larger, older fish that should be spared. Not only do the older fish provide stability ... to the population, they provide more and better quality offspring." End quote. Are there "many" sport fisheries that still throw the littles ones back to grow up? This may have been true, but for 20 years or so things have been changing. Have enough changed, maybe not, but he makes it sound like this concept has never be considered before, and he is the one who has come forth to enlighten us. IMHO
  9. Just call the suckers whistling trout.
  10. Cabela's does not have a store in Ontario, or in Canada for that matter. I can/ do get most of my stuff from BPS and Lebarons, but it requires 2 hours driving, plus traffic. Gas is about $1.10/ litre, I get about 6.8 litres/ 100km for my car 180 km round trip and a dollar right about par with the green back. Makes internet shopping more and more appealing. I made my order with watching 2 hockey games and trash talkin' my friends in our hockey pool. Now if the mail would just get here already....
  11. The key word being almost. Don't worry nikkybobby, you would not be the first one to catch a motor, anchor rope, another boat, someone else's line, a dock, a tree, a sail, grandpa's hat, grandpa's ear (while he was unhooking his hat) etc, etc, etc. Did I mention how good a caster I am? You should see me with a fly rod. I have whole stretches of river to myself. We should go fishing together... bring at hat and sunglasses... and your OHIP card.
  12. Ya the Cabela's club offer is only good for the US, I should have mentioned that I'm in central Ontario. Our combined sales tax in Ontario is 14% right now (I think). Not sure what tax is was charged, state or federal???? Like I said, the tax was close to what I would have paid here, if I could find the stuff.
  13. Thank goodness, another crisis adverted. Glad it worked out. The Collective is helping out all over the place. That's what it's all about. Now about tent waterproffing....
  14. Lots of walleye spawn in rivers, the Talbot River by Gamebridge is an easy spot to see the fish. Imagine the salmon running the rivers in BC. They are packed in there and when the run is high you'd swear you could walk across their backs. And yes the spot is a shallow stretch of the river. The fish lifts and ladders on rivers are sometimes the same thing, sometimes not. A fish ladder is made at a dam or some other impediment, man-made or otherwise, on a river. The ladder is more of a staircase that makes bypassing the dam easier for the fish. Many of these ladders will have a spot where the fish can be trapped so that they can be counted, weighed, sexed and sampled. Often then the fish are placed by hand (lifted) upstream of the dam. This holding area can be left open to let the fish pass through the ladder if no sampling is taking place. Hope that makes some sense.
  15. That's a prank you only pull once on a fishing buddy. And I still say that it was funny, no matter what he says.
  16. Shipping costs has come up before so I'd thought I'd post about Cabelas. I just ordered some essentials (I have to use the term essentials in case my wife reads this) from Cabela's. The base order was $57.00 US, $3.50 handling, $10.95 shipping and $8.68 tax, for a total of$80.13US. The shipping fee is based on the dollar value, unless it is an awkward or heavy item(s). The fees might be a bit high, but these were items I was not able to find locally and 16 odd dollars in fees (the taxes are almost a wash) is less than the gas I would have used to get to a more complete tackle place. I'll let you know how long it takes to get to my door. Now where is that darn Mailman???? UPDATE: I ordered online Sunday April 5 and received my order on Thursday April 17. Location: Barrie, Ontario. All items received. No other fees applied. This is the first time I've ordered form Cabela's, and it won't be the last, but I'll still be buying locally as well at LeBarons and BPS.
  17. When my parents wrapped up their hobby shop 30 odd years ago they sold the tackle to Billy Bob's. When we lived in North Bay it was right on the way to the cottage, if we didn't get our bait there it was Charlie's, he had his own bait ponds right on the property. If you couldn't catch walleye at "the point" on a June bug and minnow then they just weren't bitin'. Simpler times.
  18. You should have done a better job on the background. I totally recognize that spot, it's over by the lamp. Always fun to get new stuff, now go get it wet.
  19. Soooo, when are we going?
  20. I've got a spot so secret, the fish don't even know about it. Surprisingly enough there's no fishermen there either. Isn't funny how all the fish seems to know where to go so that they end up where the fishermen are? How do they do that? They must be really smart.
  21. The water levels are little higher than normal but that area is the Minesing Swamp. It is meant to flood, if it didn't many things would be completely different. If fools (and the governments that allow them) continue to built in flood plains, they will only make things worse. Building levies, funneling money and resources into flood relief and prevention is money poorly spent. The water will come down, sooner or later. But don't worry, it will come back up next spring, it always does. This isn't meant to be directed at anybody, I'm just tired of seeing the local news lead with yet another story about someone living three feet from a river that has "unexpectedly" risen right up to, and into their homes, during the thaw. Of course they talked to the same people last year, and the year before that, and... and... and... "Well you see that mark on the side of the house? That's how high the water was last year. But that's not as bad as the one year when the water came right up to the windows on the second floor." The definition of insanity is???? Phew, I feel better. Thanks for letting me vent a little.
  22. If it has been rolled-up for a while it will take longer. I would think that after a day or two there might be a problem. You may want to try blowing a little air into it. If that works just leave it un-rolled with the valve open (that's how they should be stored when you not using them anyway) to let it "dry-out".
  23. Typically after it inflates you close the valve and you're good to go. If that doesn't work you might have a leak. People will blow them up, but that's not recommended because of the moisture in your breath.
  24. With a title like that I was expecting a story worthy of Hemingway, about the fight of your life. Good to see it was just some money lost. Need someone to use that other rod and dippsy?
