It depends on what you plan on using the reel for. The Shimano is a low profile and won't hold as much line (of a given lb test). If all your doing is casting and fishing shallowish for small to mid size pike and smaller fish it's probably fine. The Abu holds more line and is more suited to larger fish, larger water and trolling. My two cents. Hope it helps.

Great stuff. Lots of ideas, info and opinions. For me the new braids have their place, I just wish it was quieter comin' through the line guides. The big thing I think is matching the line to the rod, to the application, to the conditions and the target spices. You might get away with having one of these things out of sink, but two or more is going to lead to broken line or a broken rod, backlashes, lost fish or fish too played out. Having a few different knots in your arsenal helps as well. For me that just doesn't mean being able to tie the knot siting in my living room, it means being able to tie it: bobbing in a boat, in failing light with cold hands and a buddy who has landed two fish while you were trying to see the #%@!& eye of the hook. Many of the major fishing lines have information on their web sites about how to tie knots with their products. Tight lines (pun fully intended)

Seeing those pictures reminds me of years gone by with my brother. We would spend hours in the winter organizing and then re-organizing our tackle boxes. We would trade lures back and forth waiting for spring. Memory lane.

Double header- What is it about gulp that you don't like? Is it just the hype as you say? I use gulp and power baits, as well as a half dozen other scented baits and I'm curious about the new Alive products. I'm not about to taste the various bait brands so the scent differences are moot, I get what size, shape and colour I like or what suits the application.

My fishing line post got me thinking about fishing products in general. The tackle company's have "us" down. They know we're on the look-out for something better to out-fish our buddies, or the guy next to us on the river. What have you seen in the last couple of years that you thought was hit or miss?

Now is about the time I start buying line and deciding what reel/ spool gets what line. For the most part I already know what I want for most applications. But... What "new" fishing line innovation (IE marketing strategy) has caught your eye? Or made you think "that's Bull!". Like with a new car model, I tend to give something new a year. I figure that gives the company a chance to refine the product, or for the market to indicate that it's junk. Thoughts?

Some species of fish are faster than others, however a 40lb salmon won't necessarily swim faster than a 20lb salmon. It will "pull" harder and for that I prefer to have my stronger arm holding the rod. Different strokes. No matter how you do it, it sure is fun trying to catch-up though.

I'm left handed. My rod hand (I know, I can hear the laughter) is my left hand, more strength and dexterity for hook sets, feel and casting (at least that's what works for me). Traditionally baitcast reels only came with the reel handle on the right side, even though most right handed spinning reel users had the reel on the left side. If you watch a fishing show were the host is right handed but has a baitcast reel with the handle on the right side they will often switch the rod to their right hand to cast and then they have to switch the rod back to their left hand so that they can reel with their right hand. That doesn't make sense to me, but they seem to be fine with it. Such is life. Is that worth 2 cents?
