  1. Thanks. For moose up here, with a bow a lot of zones are open to bull moose and some with anterless moose as well with an over the counter tag for both residents and residents of Canada as long as they hunt with a resident of Alberta. Have had a couple of guys out here from Ontario chasing elk with me during the bow season. In most zones for rifle hunting, you enter a draw and you usually have to wait 2 or 3 years to get drawn but in the more northern zones it is way undersuscribed so you can phone in after the draw and get a bull moose tag for November no problem every year if you want to head north. Non residents of Alberta can apply for a moose tag as well as long as they apply and hunt with a resident of Alberta. Always open to this idea if anyone wants to. Heck make a deal, moose hunting for a fishing trip for muskies or large mouth bass! LOL Have a deadly spot for bull moose during the rut in a bow zone near where I work.
  2. Been a good year so far for our group. 1 bull elk, 3 bull moose, 1 cow moose and a 4x4 whitetail. This weekend deer (both whitetails and mulies) are on the agenda. This is moi with my bull moose shot Nov 8, 2008. 442 lasered yards, broadside, one shot thru the heart with my 300 Weatherby. Nathan, friends boy with his first ever bull moose. Couple of yotes have also fallen victim. First one with my 300, second one was with my 22-250.
  3. Or also Stevie Ray Vaughn, the man could play. Too bad he passed away in the chopper crash.
  4. No doubting Ole Slow Hands guitar prowess. One performance I have always enjoyed and seen live is Mark Knopfler doing Sultans of Swing. From minute 5 till the end it is magical in my mind. Or Eddie Van Halen doing the Eruption solo. But then again Gilmour, Hendrix, Page, Lifeson, BB King etc are all very good when it comes time to make their guitar sing.
  5. I am with Lew and Joey on this one. Do the guiding thing then go to school. I worked and enjoyed life for a couple of years after high school before I went to university and wouldn't trade it for the world. But be forewarned, guiding is not all that much fun if you get the wrong client. It can turn into a 24 hour per day babysitting adventure for you. I have guided on numerous hunts out here and some are the proverbial hunts from heck. Guys won't get out of the truck, too cold, too steep, too everything for them but then some are the most rewarding times you can imagine. Also be warned guides do not make a lot of money per say from the outfitter, they make their money in tips. Also be warned as the new kid on the block, you are going to get some of the more mundane jobs but as Lew said, nothing wrong with that.
  6. I had the same unit in my old boat and used it all the time with my spinning reel. First off, the front cork piece in front of the reel base has to be farther forward and it sits over top of the first bar. The reel has to sit up straight in between the two bars with a spinning reel. Back cork handle sits underneath of the bar like you have it in your pick Holdfast. Works very well. Holds the rod in tight and when you catch a fish, just pick the rod straight up out of the holder. Very fast and easy in my mind. Just put the rod in like the pic Roy posted with the spinning reel sitting up in between the two black posts. Reel will lean over that way anyways.
  7. Awesome fish Lew. Pics like that makes one thinking that a 2500 mile one way drive be worth it just for a chance to catch a big musky like that.
  8. boatman, sorry those are Canadian miles per gallon.
  9. I looked at the Ranger but bought a used GMC Canyon with the 4 cylinder and 5 speed tranny. 2 wheel drive extended cab. At 110 I get an honest 28 to 30 mpg. Pulling my Crestliner 1600 Fishhawk at 110 kph I get low 20's. Do slow down on hills obviously but overall impressed with it.
  10. Lew, some very sound advice and surprising how many people over look those points. Not having those few items and prechecks done can change an ordinary trip into the trip from heck!

    JOBS

Worked at Safeway, IGA and another food store for first 2 years after grade 12. Knew then that that was not the career path for me so I went to U of A and got my BSc in Forestry in 1987. Been employed as a forester with the provincial government here for 21 years now. Enjoyed most every minute of it from fighting forest fires to quadding in some spectacular areas looking at timber. Unfortunately as one rises up thru the ranks you get more desk bound but I still sneak out for a mental health day and get back to the woods. Along the way I also was a volunteer firefighter which was truley enjoyable and allowed one to give back to the community. Retirement date is June 2017 at age 55 and then it is full time fishing, hunting and relaxing time.
  12. Spend the $ and get a tranny cooler put in. For what you are pulling you do not need a very big one but it is well worth the $ and piece of mind. As for towing in overdrive, no real problem unless your tranny is constantly shifting in and out which will lead to tranny failure. If tranny is shifting in and out all the time by all means kick the overdrive off.
  13. Stoty, sorry to hear about your mom and your speration. I am just going thru a seperation after having just lost my dad to cancer as well. It is a tough go but as many have said on this board, stay positive, amicable with the ex and be there for your mom!
  14. For my new 2008 Merc 50 HP 2 stroke, the Merc manual stated to run one tank of mixed fuel thru it as well as the oil injection. Vary speeds etc. Did that and then went about normal boating after that and so far no problems.
  15. That is a truley awesome video. Speaks volumes about the quality of this board and it's members.
  16. That drop is a moose, bar none. No way a 3 point elk is going to have brow tines like that or are the other points going to be that long. Lived around a herd of 500 bull elk on an elk farm for 2 years out here and none had a rack looking like that and I have chased many a wild elk out here and no 3 pointer has ever had a rack looking like that.
  17. Stoty, you saying I said Pit dominated last nite? If you think that you better reread my post.
  18. Looking at the pics again I say moose for sure as from what we would call the brow tine the main beam is going out at a 90 degree angle or that is how I interpret the pics. An elks main beam goes back out over his body, only member of the deer family to have his antlers go back and not forward.
  19. If Malkin ever showed up for a game this series would be a dandy. Even Staal last night was lost. Conn Smythe trophy better be going to Fleury as without him, this series would have been done in 4. I do not think Detroit really wanted a game 5 like this. They totally dominated but still lost. Man that has to be a bit deflating for them and a serious boost for the Pens. Game 6 should be good and Detroit best be careful as Malkin has to come out of his funk soon and then look out as Crosby and him both rolling will be pretty tough to deal with.
  20. My humble opinion based on the pics is no. Looks more like moose to me.
  21. This series reminds me a lot of 1983. Young upstart Oilers against the powerhouse Isles. Oilers learned the first time, next year they dominated. Pens are going to be a major force to deal with and Detroit, this is like their last hurrah, age is catching up with them.
  22. Sad news indeed. God Speed Bo!
  23. That is an awesome report. Congrats to your daughter on her first fish.
  24. I had a Magellan GPS 315, thing finally died last year after getting drowned in my boat. Worked fine for 10 years till then. Buddy has one and still uses it to this day. Work has bought me too Garmin's and must admit, they are a way more user friendly GPS, especially the 76Csx I now have. Beauty GPS. No more Magellans for me.
  25. Jim Saric, Dave Mercer or Pete Mania. Like those 3 the best.
