I think alot of these show hosts set lousy examples for young fisherfolk who are trying to learn the sport and watch these guys to try and learn things. Obviously their not role models for anybody, at least not in my opinion, but when your on the tube and being watched by 1000's, I think they could set a better example as far as techniques are concerned. One of my biggest beefs is the way they hold a fish outta the water while they yap about a sponsors products and how they would never have caught a fish with out it, and meanwhile the fish is gasping for air. If you gonna keep a fish, that's fine, but don't hold it in your fat little mitt for 3 minutes while you and then toss it back in the drink. And what about Italo ?? He measures nearly every single fish he catches no matter how big it is. Why on earth would anyone have to take the time to measure a 17" pickeral or a 12" bass. Same as weighing a fish, why do they care if a salmon is 12 pounds or a bass 3 pounds or a musky is 9 pounds. I can see it if they hook into a trophy fish, but c'mon, are they just trying to make themselves look good with the dinks ?? And why does everybody dislike Shelly & Courtney ?? I think you guys are all just jealous cause a couple gurls got TV show & you didn't -
This has nuthin to do with fishing, but it's a Sunday morning and I'm bored so I thought I'd pass this sad little story on if anyone is interested. I joined the Navy way back in November 1963, infact, it was the same day that John F Kennedy was murdered in Texas. I was stationed in Halifax and made some really good friends while there, but spent most of my time with one bud in particular. After awhile, we ended up on different ships, and while sailing off to different corners of the world, we lost touch with each other.....no email back in those days and phone calls from one ship to another were verbotten. I got out of the Navy a few years later and came back to Ontario, got married, started a family and a career and never heard from my old bud again. Anyways, there's a few websites around about the Navy and one in particular has a section where you can post your personal info, such as what ships you were on and dates and email addy's in hopes of getting in touch with long lost shipmates, so I posted to it a couple years back in hopes of finding my old pal. I've heard back from several old friends from back in the good ole days, and then sure enuff, last month I get an email from the guy I've been wanting to hear from. He'd somehow come across the same Navy website, found my message and contacted me. I was so darned happy to finally hear from him and we began talking and sharing photo's from back in the day. Turns out he's in Windsor and now I'm thinking of getting together down the road for a mini reunion and sharing some tales from days past. Then I never heard anything from him for a few days, but I figure he's busy or something and he'll contact me later. Last week I get an email from his wife telling me my old long lost pal has been rushed to the hospital in serious condition and things aren't looking good for him. Then last night I get another email from her telling me he died Strange how things happen in this life isn't it ?? Think about someone for 40 years, then finally connect with them, and a month later it's all over. Sorry if my little tale bored you, and I'm certainly NOT looking for any sympathy or anything, but I just thought I'd pass it on to you incase you've got any long lost pals that you've thought of looking up. So, what about it, does anybody here have anyone you've lost touch with over the years, and have been thinking of searching for ??

Great fishing report Wayne, even without the fish !! Beautiful scenery shots too Keep working on that big girl on the hump, your day is coming bud !! Your right about some of the rules though Wayne, some of them are good, but others don't always seem to make alot of sense sometimes. Same thing as requiring a flashlight in your boat at noon when you NEVER fish at night. And requiring a fire extinguisher in a boat with a built-in gas tank, but not for a boat with a portable gas tank. Guess the rulemakers figure 5 gallons of flaming gas in your boat isn't a problem And you can drive a 40' cabin cruiser WITHOUT a license, but you NEED a license when you hop in the 8' dingy with a 5 hp to go to shore Strange stuff.....very strange indeed.....

Absolutely fantastic Don and congrats on finally getting #1, she's a real beaut !! I was hoping it woulda happened when we were up north last August, but this is just as good !!
-
And don't forget to change the batteries in ALL your smoke detectors too. Changing them with your clocks twice a year is a good way to remember. You DO have smoke detectors.......don't you ??

There AREN'T any walleye in Quinte Brian, it's strictly pickeral water out that way
-
Ahhh yes Glen, a fine day of fish'n indeed Very nice !!

I'm not a jigger myself Gerritt so can't offer any specifics, but I recall watching an episode of Fish'n Canada awhile back and Pete Bowman was jiggin up some BIGGUNS in Adolphus Reach in the late fall, infact he brought in some monster eyes !! I'm sure you know it, but Adolphus Reach is the waters east of the ferry. I can't recall his bait, but I'm thinking it was a large white grub and as for the depths, you'd just have to find them on your sonar. Hope that's some sorta help to you

Pickeral (walleye) fish'n to me isn't about catching a fish, it's about memories. I only fish for them about 4 days a year, the long weekend in May on one of my favorite lakes in the world, the Bay of Quinte. That's a trip and a tradition in my family that started way back in 1955 and has pretty well continued until the present. Myself at 9 years old, my brother Ed at 8, my dad and my grandfather, went to Hay Bay for the 1st time in search of pickeral. We found a little general store beside the water and stopped to ask if he knew of any campgrounds in the area. He said we could pitch our tent in his backyard and seeing as it was right beside the water, we could launch our 15' cedarstrip there too. That little backyard went on the become Pickeral Park, one of the Hay Bay landmarks of today, and we were about his 1st ever campers. For many many years after, My grandfather, dad, brother & myself looked forward all winter to that trip and it never failed to be fabulous. Hot & sunny, cold & wet, even some years with snow, we always had a wonderful time and were building memories as we went. Over the years, we gained a few members to our group, and sometimes lost a few, but the 4 of us continued and it was still always one of my best trips of any other time of the year. Eventually, my grandfather died and he was missed terribly on those camping trips, but the remaining 3 of us kept going and then eventually my son was old enough to come along and he enjoyed it as much as the rest of us and sort of took my grandfathers spot. Ten years ago, my dad died and that was terrible and as was his father, my dad was missed on these trips too, but myself, Ed, and my son continued going every year. It was tough without my dad, but again the memories helped get us thru it and we continued to have wonderful trips. Three years ago, my son was killed and I thought my world would end. I didn't know what the Quinte trip would be like without my son along, but myself and Ed went anyway and made the best of it, but it was really getting tougher to enjoy myself now with most of my family gone, but the fabulous memories of past trips kept me going. Now, it was only Ed & I left and we were sposed to go to Quinte last May 17th as we'd done for 50 odd years, but then Ed got sick and died the same day we were spose to leave. Now my fishing world has completely fallen apart. I've lost all the men in my family that I spent so many wonderful fishing trips with, the people that taught me how to cast and retrieve, clean a pickeral, pitch a tent, build a campfire. I'm the only male left on my entire side of the family now and I hafta tell you, it's getting very lonely now. No pickeral trip to Quinte will ever be as good again, infact I don't even know if I COULD go to Quinte again, but I have memories, infact so many memories and their all good. Fabulous memories of so many unbelievable trips with so many great people. Even if I never see Quinte or another pickeral again, I'll still be a happy man every time I think of past trips, and bonfires, and tents and sleeping in the backyard of a general store on the shores of Hay Bay, so many years ago. And to me, that's "What's to love about walleye".......er pickeral

My grandparents had a waterfront home on the west side of Simcoe, just south of the Narrows, from the late 50's up thru the early 70's and my grandfather used to get quite a few muskies up in that area. I don't recall him ever landing any monsters, but plenty of nice fish graced his boat. It'd be nice to see the fishery come back to that some day.
-
Shawn, that's really generous of you, adding a trophy, and then making a friendly tourney out of the trip. Something like that can really add some fun to an already fun event. A group of us OFC friends had a friendly little musky tourney last summer with a trophy thrown in for the winner, which just added to the fun of the whole thing. And BTW, me being the winner was kinda nice too

Well, sure Phil, it WOULD be funny to you, you don't have eyebrows down to your knees At least that's how my barber explained it to me
-
Well, I don't feel so bad now, seeing as most of you guys appear to be doing much worse than me
-
Yer a good man Mr. Irish
-
Anybody that still uses the term "pickeral" .....and there's only a few of us left......has to be a good guy Welcome to the board Bill, your gonna fit right in
-
Like I always say Weeds, you don't need to catch a fish, to have a great day of fish'n.
-
......when the barber asked me this mornin if I wanted my eyebrows trimmed sheeeesh, that can't be a good sign

hmmmmm, lotsa good stuff said about Crystal, but now I'm seeing too many negatives to go along with it , and I certainly don't want to try something new that's gonna give me grief just when I need it the most. Thanks for everyones input, but I think I'll just re-spool my pickeral rigs with new Power Pro and know for certain that I've got a guaranteed good product between the fish & my fish'n pole. Tanks boyz
-
It's not over yet TG, we've still got 6 weeks of musky fish'n to go up here
-
knotaclue, I tried regular Fireline a few years back and had problems with it breaking too easy, infact I had 30 pound breaking on small bass, so I gave up on it. I like PP for musky but will try this new stuff on my pickeral reels and see how it goes. The small PP I'm currently using needs changing next year anyways, so I'll give it a try.

I posted these 2 pics about a month ago, but both these fish came on the same day and within 15 minutes of each other, and both as the sun was just breaking over the horizon. Again, a transition from one thing to another And tinbanger, I think our boy, Musky Wayne, is gonna become someone to reckon with
-
Thanks Mike, I was thinking of maybe trying it next year while nightime trolling for Quinte pickeral in the spring. I currentely use Power Pro with a mono leader but may have a look at this stuff.

I was watching Izumi last night and he was using Berkely Fireline Crystal. Not sure how long it's been around but it was new to me and I wondered if anyone has used it and what you thought of it. Sposed to be a braided line that becomes invisible under the water. http://www.berkley-fishing.com/prod.php?k=...14&u=FLFSCY
