One of the things I like most about fishing is the peace an quiet of an early morning or late night trip with nothing to hear except the odd bird chirping or a fish jumping outta the water. So nice & peaceful Then comes the winter and the soft water fishing shuts down and I have no interest whatsoever in ice fishing, so I get my fix from watching fishing shows on the tube, mostly WFN, but lately I find many of the newer shows are beginning to sound like rock concerts for 16 year olds What the heck is up with all this music blasting away in the background, so loud on some of the newer shows that I can hardly hear what the fishing dood is even talking about ?? I came in this morning after shovelling snow for an hour and figured I'd pour a coffee, then sit down for awhile and watch some fishing on the tube, but ended up shutting it off after only 10 minutes because of all the dang racket I was being forced to listen to. Am I just getting old and miserable, or does anyone else wish for the old days when fish'n shows were about fish'n, rather than being more like a Gun's N Roses concert for kids with a bit of fish'n in the background ?? Sheeesh, I hope it's not just me that hates the racket

Yeah, a little batch indeed Roy Just happy I don't have to drive anywhere for the next week

Sorry Ric, I somehow missed this thread entirely. Very impressive work you've done there, and the 1st thing I thought of when I looked at them was that they reminded me of baby squid..... long slender body, eyes set way back and the hair on the back resembling tenticles. Hope they put some fish on the beach down there for ya

I was out shovelling snow about 30 minutes ago and saw a large flash, then heard this loud rumbling starting, then as it got louder I realised it was thunder. It actually lasted about 20 seconds and was like what you'd hear during a summer storm. Guess we've all heard winter thunder, but this was much longer than I've ever heard before. Interesting stuff !!

Hey Roy, when it comes to children & charities, there are few men around who are more charitable, caring, loving or generous than you are, my friend, and I'll leave it at that. Most on this board don't know that about you, but I just thought I'd throw that in.

Good one Jed, and ain't it the truth too !!

Terry, Fire Fighters across North America have been raising funds to fight musclar dystrophy for decades and have raised millions upon millions of dollars to fight the disease and are historically the largest fund raiser of any other organization. It's something the firemen across the continent took on a long time ago and they will go on soliciting funds until the disease is conquered. Sorry you were late for work because of it, but I figured if you knew the probable reason for the delay, you wouldn't feel so angry. Now if they were raising money for a hocky game, that's a different story And BTW, I agree with you about the Jehovas Witnessess and their tag-along kids !!

I saw a show awhile back on Discovery Channel about the same thing with the huge tractor trailers that travel the ice roads in the Arctic. It was explaining how they'd push a wave of water ahead of them under the ice and if they went too fast, it could break thru in front of them, or it could travel all the way to the shore and then bust out there and leave open water between the ice & shore. It showed a few trucks that broke thru holes they'd created themselves and it didn't sound as if they received too much sympathy from anyone, specially the other drivers that couldn't get by with their own deliveries as their pretty well confined to specific "lanes" on the ice. I forget the speed their restricted to but it was very slow, something like 25 KPH and if their caught exceeding it, the consequenses could be quite severe. It was an extremely interesting show if anyone ever gets a chance to watch it again.

Glen, the Toronto news this morning reported upwards of 50 people killed by the twisters down your way last night, good to hear you & yours made out OK !! Makes our 6" of snow last night sorta pale in comparison.

Here's another slant on things. Back when I was a kid in the 50's we'd look forward to monster snow storms cause that always meant $$$$ in our pockets. Me and Eddyk would grab our shovels and off we'd go around the neighborhood and we'd bang on EVERY door and ask if they'd like their driveways and sidewalks shovelled and most people would say yes. We never set a price but left it up to the homeowner, but it seemed we were always happy with what we got. Same as the summer time, we'd wander the streets cutting grass or trimming hedges and when it was too hot to do that, we'd set up a lemonade stand in front of the house and make a bit of money that way. We'd go to the local park in the evening where there was organized baseball and be the "bat-boy" for the teams. We'd run out and grab the bat after the ball was hit then run back to the dugout with it. We'd get a quarter a game and they'd give us all the broken bats that we'd take home and nail & tape back together. We'd make lots of $$$$ at Christmas time cause a whole group of us would go door-door singing Christmas caroles. I don't think we were very good but the neigbors seemed to like it anyways and always payed us what they could afford. When my kids were small, they did the exact same things as I did and were always out hustling for some extra spending money and used to do quite well at it. Now today, I can't remember the last time I had kids at the door singing Christmas carols, or cutting my grass or offering to shovel my driveway for a few $$$$ and I doubt if any of them have any idea what a lemonade stand is cause I haven't seen one in years. It seems like their all very good at banging on my door looking for free money for school or hockey or a handout at the local CTC, but it's been years since heard a kid say "hey mister, I'll gladly shovel the 6" of snow from your driveway if you'd be kind enough to donate a few dollars to my hockey team" I guess we can blame alot of todays parents for that, but it seems to me there's too much of "gimme for nothing" rather than "could I please do something for you in exchange for something you could do for me" Liike a said though, that's just another slant on things from my perspective.

We have a couple charities that we support on a regular basis throughout the year, then we also give to the Sally Ann at Christmas, the Legion in November and who could resist the Boy Scout apple drive or the Girl Guide cookies (I can eat a box myself in one sitting) but we pretty well draw the line there. I almost never give to kids knocking on my door or those who are waiting for me at the entrance of what seems like nearly every store I approach. You just have to pick & choose who or what you want to support and then basically cut it off after that point or you'll have your hand in your pocket most of the day....in Toronto anyways. As for squeegee kids, street people, whiners, beggers and bums.....nope, nada, ziltch

I've been out driving around Toronto abit this morning and we've got around 4-5 inches, but it's very thick & heavy so traction is excellent as long as you've got GOOD winter tires. Sposed to stop for awhile then another go-round this evening

NF...Thought the government was suppose to help out!

I have a cousin, about 60 years old, who was born into welfare and has been on it her ENTIRE life. She said it was such a good thing, why would she ever give it up. She's NEVER had a job and has NEVER worked one single day in her life and told me I was a fool for working so hard all those years. She sits at home watching TV & drinking beer all day and waits for the next free handout to arrive in the mail. She's never been married but has 6 children by 6 different men and is very proud of that fact too, cause more kids meant more $$$$ when they were small. I knew another couple that rented a waterfront winterized cottage in our trailer park for several years. They were both on welfare for years but it was the same thing, they just didn't feel like working and would rather spend the summers laying on the beach drinking beer all day and getting suntans while their welfare cheques supported a lifestyle that many WORKING people can't afford. Welfare is a good thing for a TEMPORARY fix when somebody falls on hard times and needs a leg up, but it's so sad when somebody who is desperate for help can't get it, while lazy, useless, no-good people like my cousin can live off the system their entire life and get away with it. I don't know what your brother's circumstances are Charlie, and it's none of our business either, but I sure hope things work out well for him. -
Very sorry to hear your sad news Dan, condolances from Diane and I.

Mike, I'm really sorry to hear the news about your Dad and my thoughts go out to him and his entire family.

Don't know if it's so much knowledge Roy, but maybe just the fact I've been around so long and have had LOTS of years to experiment with stuff

Weeds, no reason at all Suicks can't be used from shore, infact muskies are caught in tight all the time and the baits are quite easy to cast, but you need to have the proper rod & reel to do it. A normal bass or pickeral rod would be too light for them. It actually works Rich, infact the same way you can dead stick a minnow bait for bass, specially when the water is calm. Toss it out and let it sit for awhile, then begin with some small twitches and if there's a hungry fish nearby he'll come up and smack it. Infact, I was fishing with Roger (BPS Bassman) a couple years ago and he had his Suick just sitting on top of the water doing nothing while we yakked and a musky came up and nailed it Try it over top of the weeds or a rock pile and you may be happy you did Depends on what you want the bait to do Andy, but even on the weighted ones I start with 1/4 oz and sometimes go more. Best thing to use is the stick-on wheel weights they use for balancing chrome wheels on a car. You can just stick them on to find the weight you want and the spot that gives the best balance, then if you want to make them permanent, it very easy. Once you find the spot you want, use a utility knife to cut a slot big enough to hold the weight and make it about 1/8" deeper than the weight. I like to use the 2 part, 5 minute epoxy to line the bottom and sides of hole, then drop in the weight and then totally cover it with the epoxy till it's flush with the bottom of the bait. Let it cure over night, then you can paint it whatever color you want. Don't be too concerned about matching any paint colors too precisely though because muskies just aren't that fussy about what they hit and they don't need anything fancy. The biggest bait in this picture, about 12" and 3rd from the right with the yellow & black stripes was made by aplumma from this board and is far superior to any of the Suicks I've got. ( I've told you before Art, you should bo into the business ) Anyways Andy, that's just a couple ideas for you to experiment with. Suicks are an excellent bait and will put ALOT of muskies in your boat for you....good luck with them.

Thanks for posting that Glen, it made for some very interesting, early morning reading. It's really amazing how many different things can influence the feeding moods of a fish, specially something like the pull of the moon, but it certainly does make a difference. Nice having the GPS on the boat, it gives the times for the sun/moon rise & set. My own personal choice for something that turns on fish, at least muskies anyways, is the approach of a huge thunderstorm. When the sky turns black and the wind begins to howl, get ready to set yer hook

Hey Matt, lemme know when your up my way next season and we'll hook up again for another great day chasing some slimers.
