Are we crazy or are we obsessive in fishing
lew replied to Reel Trouble's topic in General Discussion
Best of luck today TroutnMuskieHunter, and hopefully you nail a real pig !! The Ottawa River is a favorite musky spot for me too, but unfortunately I never got out that way this year. First time in about 5 years I've missed it but will be back next year for sure.. -
Purple with gold blades in the fall ?? .........surley you jest !! You'll NEVER catch a fall musky with that set-up Pete, the blades are too small

Being retired and spending most of my time at the lake when everyone else is working, I too spend alot of time fishing alone and really enjoy it and am often on the lake 10-12 hours a day with nobody to talk to 'cept the odd passing seagull. I always have a cell phone with me & GPS if I need to give my location to anyone, but have never been one to wear a PFD even though I know it's a foolish thing to do. I fish the West Arm of Nippissing at least a couple weeks a year and was out there alone in September 2 or 3 years ago on a very rough day. I looked around and realised how fast I could be in trouble if I went in the drink with no boats anywhere on the lake and not a cottage in sight and me being miles from camp. I put on a PFD and then fished from the lower level of the boat rather than the raised casting deck and immediately felt much safer and now nearly always wear a PDF when I'm alone in the boat on rough days. Might not save my butt next time but it sure can't hurt. And Dave, landing a big musky by yerself is the easy part........trying to get a picture of it and have the whole fish centered in the camera is the hard part

Best of luck in your new location and hopefully you get moved in without too many problems. It can be quite a shock to the system trying to get used to new digs. Out of my 32 years as a fireman here in Toronto, I spent 25 of those years in the same firehall and you sure do get settled in after awhile, almost like a 2nd home.

I was away for most of the summer Tom and missed this story, but it looks as if you had a fantastic trip with some incredible pictures, specially the bear & eagle. Were starting to see Bald Eagles down in the Kawarthas the last couple years and their a very welcome sight........at least to me anyways. Thanks for taking the time to post this great fish'n tale & congrats on your 1st ever musky too !!

Congrats on the new purchase jedi, I always enjoy reading about your yak adventures.

WTG Eric, that's a nice fat fall musky. There's been a few big fish, including a couple 50"ers come outta that deep section this year. Sadly, this is the 1st year in a long time that I never fished Pigeon

Since 1914 nearly every man in my family has served in the armed forces to defend both Great Britain & Canada, and some of them died doing it, and one of the things they fought for was the right to vote. I don't always like the choices we have, but at least I vote for who I think is best and always thank my family for giving me the freedom to do so.

I went down to the local CTC this morning and as I walk thru the front door I'm greeted by a lady standing beside a big wheel.....like a Crown & Anchor type of wheel. She tells me to spin the wheel and I'll win some cash, so I'm not against some extra money and give it a whirl and end up winning $10 off my next purchase with my CTC card. I have to answer a couple standard questions on a form and she's just asking the usual stuff .......name, address, phone #........then she asks how much money I earn a year. I tell her it's none of her business what I earn, yet she insists it really IS her business and I hafta tell her my yearly salary or I won't get my $$$$. I tell her to keep her lousy $10 and start to walk away, but then she says, "Oh never mind, thank you Sir and here's your $10 coupon. I know it's just a marketing thing and it's not a big deal really, but in an era where they don't ask age, religion or any other personal stuff anymore, I was just kinda taken back a bit by the question. Not a rant or anything else, just my thoughts on a Friday afternoon as I'm getting ready to head north to my trailer for 4 glorious days

Thanks you Sir, and a happy Columbas Day to you & yours

This is the Great White North Glen, we don't even close our windows up here till the temps drop below zero and winter storms are nuthin more than an inconvenience that sometimes slow down the boat ramps

I remember that sad day very well Bud, and it was indeed touching to see how the members of this wonderful board came together to stand with you and your family and offer you any support we could. I think it was perhaps the 1st time OFC actually came together as one to help out one of our own members and it's a tradition that's come to be the norm around here now. Gerritt, you were also one of the 1st members to offer me support when I faced a similar tragedy only a couple years later and I'll always remember that too.

WHY.. did we suddenly switch to condensed threads?
lew replied to irishfield's topic in General Discussion
Wayne, I think it's something you need to click in "options" at the top right of your screen, but darned if I remember what -
That was a rough day Wayne, I remember it well

Another option, and the one I went with myself, is 2 seperate units. Rather than having a combo unit, which gives you a fairly small screen for both the GPS & sonar when you split them to see both sides at once, you'll still have a full screen on both units which to me anyways, gives a much better look at what's going on. My sonar is 5" and the GPS is 7" Just another thought for you.

Hope you can make it this year Wayne

Absolutely NOT Stan, it's an open invitation to any OFNer who wants to come out and have a good day on the water and then a nice supper somewhere at the end of the day to compare notes. We've been doing this for a few years now and it's always a great day and a nice way to close out the season. Our boat is already full Stan, but hopefully you can hitch a ride with someone, it'd be good to finally meet you after all this time.

There's a place on Chemong Road in the north end of Peterboro that builds custom trailers, including alot of enclosed ones, and I'd bet he could do what your looking for. Might be expensive but maybe worth a phone call. I've dealt with him before and their an excellent company, infact I may be talking to him next season about putting oil bath hubs on my boat trailer. NF I cant wait for another exciting Hockey season
lew replied to holdfast's topic in General Discussion
It was on the radio last night that Hamilton wanted an NHL hockey team but the request was turned down by those in charge. They said if Hamilton was given a hockey team, then Toronto would want one too. hahahaha, an oldie but goodie -
Thanks fellers, I'll put a check in the box.

Although I come from a long line of hunters, I was never one myself. I used to go on the hunts for many years and still always enjoy time in the bush but could just never find it in myself to kill an animal just for sport, specialy something as majestic as a deer or moose. I don't even keep a fish unless is gonna die anyways but that's just me and I'd never try and push my views on the subject on anyone. I'm not in any way opposed to hunting, it's just not my thing. Most of us eat meat and I would assume most people hope that the animals that are raised for food are killed fast and humanely. I think the thing is though, it doesn't take too much for folks to realise that when someone is shooting at an animal running thru the bush, whether with a gun or a bow, a clean fast kill is often impossible and the animal is often horribly maimed by the shooter and suffers a terrible, slow, painful death. I once saw a deer that was hit about 6 times before it finally died. It had part of it's jaw shot off, it's inards were hanging out and it was crawling on 3 legs because a front leg had been blown apart at the knee. That's the image that many folks have of hunters and hunting and I think if you cart an animal home on the roof of your car or over the fender of your truck for all to see, your just adding to the anti's agenda and giving them more fuel for their fires. It's often mentioned on this board that were all sposed to be sportsmen and show respect for the critters we chase, whether in the bush or under the water, but I think stuff like that is lost when dead animals are held high for the world to see, specially when guys are driving around town for a couple days to be sure everyone see's what he killed. Personally, I think hunters would do themselves a favour by covering up their kills rather than showing them off for the whole world to see........ What folks don't see can't offend them. If your driving down the hiway or thru town with a dead and bloody animal draped over the hood of your car with his eyes wide open and tongue hanging out, your just looking for trouble as far as I'm concerned. As I said, I'm not a hunter but also not oppossed to it personally, but many people are and a bit of discression goes a long ways......throw a cover over it. Just my opinion.

I use AVG anti-virus and like it but am not sure about one setting. In the Resident Shield section there's a box called "Scan For Tracking Cookies" Should that be ticked or not ??
