I hear you Brian. A pal bought is very 1st new out of the showroom truck at 65. He went with the Ram with Hemi. I have no idea why he bought new as he has a heated quansit building complete with a hydraulic lift. All I will say because this isn't the Dodge/Ford/Chevy which is best thread, he said he made a huge mistake, especially when he had to pay a 100 bucks for an oil service he could do in his sleep to maintain his warranty.

Brand loyalty? I call Bull. If a big ticket product is less money than the brand we say we are loyal to the loyalist will buy it. My Silverado new was 10K less then my neighbours new F-150. But I didn't get a fake plastic woodgrain dash. As far as an Auto Workers wage as $34.00 an hour I call Bull again. With health and dental benefits, major medical and the big one, legacy costs that wage is closer to 60 bucks an hour not the $34.00 that is calculated per hour.

Oh just great. I never hunted but my kid brother is an avid Hunter, his crew and he drive from the Niagara region to the Manitoba boarder for Moose each and every year. I just got 10 pounds of Deer meat this past week. Just great. After reading the article it would be extremely rare to get sick from it. I'm eating it and I will enjoy it

This will keep some boats in the water late this year!
Old Ironmaker replied to OhioFisherman's topic in General Discussion
14 lbs. is a big fish even here on Erie, even Quinte under the ice. It has been very calm here for the last few days here on the north shore at least. Last week Ore boats were being tossed around. I had Zebra mussels on the deck. This lake can be a beast without warning. November is our high wind month. There is a Walleye tourney on Erie every summer, the 444. I think it means 4 days, 4 men, 4 locations, or something close. The north shore tourney is out of Port Colbourne on the east end of Erie. The other 3 are on the US side. The Pt. Coulbourne tourney is sold out months before the date, it was $400 per boat a few years ago when we entered and got blown off the lake in buddy's 21 foot StarCraft both Sat and Sunday, the first few days was like glass, they aren't the big money days. Don't quote me but each location is a 40K first prize. There plenty of pros every year with $100,000 or more barges. I don't know who won the CDN event this year but for the previous 2 years local guys here took the prize. I met the kid that won 2 years ago and his boat was a 17 footer with 4 on board. Better be organized for that and 8 lines, and the boat owner was a massive young lad, had to go 250 or more . If his 3 mates were even close to the same size it would be cramped a tad and the water line had to be high to say the least. Let us know when the numbers are in my Buckeye friend Johnny D. -
That is absolutely fantastic and congrats to you Grimsby. I retired, or should I say took my pension from Stelco at a very early age, 45 to be exact. We had 25 and out in the Ironmaking dept. and I took advantage of it in 2000 with 27.5 years of service. The first year I remodeled the cottage to move into. Then I went into business in St. Catherine's. I had a few credits from Mac years earlier and signed up to complete a simple B.A. at Brock at 50. A bucket list thing for me, I really didn't do it for any reason other than to see if I could and make my Mom very happy, I think. I couldn't go full time and it took me 5 years, one of the best 5 years and challenging of my life. I thought I would be the oldest at the University but was surprised that there were many older than I both men and women. We were popular with both young students and Prof's as we were asked often for our basically lifetime of employment experiences. It wasn't easy so I know what it took from you to do this. Again congratulations on you achieving your degree as well as the new employment Grimsby. 50 is the new 30 as long as you don't look in the mirror. It irks me when capable people at middle age or younger that have unfortunately lost their employment and don't do much to find something for themselves. Any course doesn't have to be full time, and it is advantageous to work shifts and weekends if one wishes to fast track it. As someone that was in the position to hire there isn't much more impressive than to look at a resume and see any education ongoing or completed recently from someone over the age of 30. There is no such thing as too late, too old to stupid or too frightened to get any type of education be it a College, University or an apprenticeship. Too lazy yes. Now one don't even have to enter a classroom as there are very many opportunities to do online courses. There is plenty of financial support from our Governments to get into a program if one qualifies especially if on E.I. edit: As if I haven't babbled enough I must add that we had a neighbour that went into his place of business each and every day until the age of 91. His son's obviously were doing much of the heavy lifting but he was there everyday, sometimes Saturdays. So I don't think you are nuts taking on new employment rather than planning your retirement in your 50's. You go Grimsby. You da man. Johnny D

Joe, I'm 16 years younger than you and am now riddled with arthritis. I fished exactly once this year, golfed once. Just 3 years ago I was golfing 70 rounds and out in the boat a few times a week in between golfing. I'd give my left nut to do what you were able to at 79. Hang in man.

I'm not surprised at all. We went through this 15 years ago at Stelco. GM simply isn't going to sell anymore Impalas, Caddy SUV's and big 1/2 tons that Oshawa makes. Self driving and electrical/hybrids is the way of the future, and that is what GM said about the closing. It's not 2000 job losses, it's more like 20,000 plus ancillary jobs.

I just got some serious sticker shock. Amazon has the rear transducer on for only $1739.46 CDN and the front trolling motor transducer for merely $4315.46/shipping included. Ice fishing mount is only 200 bucks. They only want 50 bananas for a 3 buck clamp to hold the trolling motor transducer on. No price for the unit itself of which I could now care less. For those prices I could hire a diver to film the bottom.

Need new boat cover, advise please
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
We have a very good custom cover shop here in Dunnville too. Looking for a temporary cover like they sell at Crappy Tire until I can get mine made this spring. If it were in the budget I would do it over the winter but still need something to cover it now. I don't think she can match that deal though. 700 bucks for a travel cover, no engine covers. Sunbrella. -

Thanks Akri, a good explanation for a technically challenged Boomer. Hey, I used to install 8 tracks, so not that technically challenged. Some even had 4 speakers, Quadriphonic 8 track from Muntz Car Audio. I paid about 25% for that stereo as I did for the 1970 Thunderbird. And I tell you it sounded as good or better than what you can get today without spending big money and filling the trunk full of amps. I think it was 100 watts per channel, and crystal clear. But then again the interior of the car was the size of Hamilton Place Theatre. Anyone remember Muntz?

Two youths beat a coyote to death in Alberta....

No I'm just going from what I have read when youths often do something terrible like this. -
Two youths beat a coyote to death in Alberta....
Old Ironmaker replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
They were bored and that's why they decided to do that. That and evil. Sometimes I think it best I won't be around for another 40 years. And they are stupid, they video taped it! I hope they get them real good but they won't get more than a slap on the wrist. Juevy offenders. -
What's on your FISHING Bucket List?

What's on your FISHING Bucket List?
Old Ironmaker replied to David Chong's topic in General Discussion
I was told in no uncertain terms by a infamous Perch Charter guy on Erie that limits out each and every time he goes on the water who will go to his grave screaming there is no such thing as a 15" Perch in Ontario or any other place in the World. So you must be mistaken. He could tell you himself but he is banned from most every fishing forum that exists. Here too if I'm not mistaken. I'll still try for a 14. Baby steps. -
What's on your FISHING Bucket List?

We are well represented David with you on the team. Did Izumi eat more than fish? I'm only kidding I knew him before he had the show, but did he? In no particular order: That 50" Musky A Musky more than 49.999" The Muskellunge that goes 50" Any sized Grouper that I can catch and eat. My favorite eating fish including Perch and Walleye. A nice sized Snook I won't eat. The 14.01" Perch to beat my fishing partners many 14"ers. -
That unit sure gives lifelike images, in shallow water at least. I wonder what kind of hit the pocket book will take? Be careful boy's and girl's, those docks get slippery and that water is chilly this time of year. Don't ask.

Here we go, lost another text, new PC new buttons. I need a temporary boat cover. The old one has ripped stem to stern with a wind storm the other day. I don't expect it to last long but I need one while the boat waits in line to get shrink-wrapped. How long a cover for the 19'6" StarCraft. I will remove the tall casting seat up front and put in one of the passenger seats folded down. About 26" high folded down. Any recommendations please? A few hundred bucks is fine. I have seen some CTC specials not much thicker than saranwrap.

There aren't words. Those 2 are future abusers for sure. Lock them up now in a adult Federal prison with all the benefits. Nice, nice. -
I do believe colour matters but not as much as some do i.e. Live Target.

I wish you hardwater guys the best this winter. I was once a member. Actually went to Bear Creek a few January's ago and caught fish, inside a warm hut. Brought back memories, all good. However I hope to curtail all my ice fishing now to the freezer. 4 years ago my wife bought me a Musky charter with Dan Columby in the West Arm of Nipissing. When we got there around Oct 30 it was 26C and sunny. Italo was there to film a Musky show and ended up filming a Large mouth show at Maskinongi camp. Lucky for me in a few days it dropped down big time and even with that cold front got to boat a few Musky.

We used the Peltor brand radios at the plant for years and they could withstand the heat and abuse of Blast Furnace operations. They could be hooked up where an attachment went around your neck and it could be hands free voice activated. They were good for a few kms. and that is in an environment with massive amounts of steel structure between you and the other guy. The speakers were in the hearing protection ear muffs, so hands free with the voice activation could be an advantage hunting or one can use the hand held remote option to key the mic. I know we were always missing more than a few pair around hunting season. I know they weren't cheap in price or quality. peltorcomms.3m.com

A Sort of Report of a Portly Speck
Old Ironmaker replied to Chuck Enwinde's topic in General Discussion
OMG was my 1st reaction. I have only even seen a few Speckled Trout in my life and were the size of that beasts tail. I thought I would see a pic of Mr. Bunk holding that behemoth. Photo shop? You both have a resemblance. Older bro? That's a compliment Charles. -
Like I have said a time or two, living my youth over again vicariously through Mr. Bunks adventures.
