Anybody use a torch to get rid of weeds ....NF
Old Ironmaker replied to lew's topic in General Discussion
A dear friend of ours has WPTSD, weed post traumatic stress disorder. I swear she can't sleep knowing weeds are growing in here stone driveway. She uses 1/2 rock salt, 1/4 white vinegar and 1/4 water. Uses a chemical sprayer and it works. In Italy I'm driving along the magnificent countryside enjoying the rolling hills of Grape Vines and rows of tall Cyprus trees and all of a sudden there is zero visibility, thick acrid smoke and I come to a stop. "What's going on dear cousin?" He says " Don't stop we will never get there, they are cutting the grass,,,,,,,,,by burning it." I tell him " I can't see how can I drive?" If you hit someone that's there problem." Italian logic. -
Z man jigs and NED rigs---anyone tried these?
Old Ironmaker replied to SirCranksalot's topic in General Discussion
Looks familiar to something we used in the late 70's. A do nothing jig that worked great for Northerns believe it or not. We lost many a jig and fish because they did not work on one of those 2 ton steel cables called leaders back then. We experienced a glob of plastics in the trays of our Steel and Aluminum tackle boxes. They could melt the compartments right through. What a mess you would find in the spring. -
Often with aluminum boats leaks will appear then disappear. The aluminum shifts and or rivets seat themselves, only to appear latter. Please never put water inside a boat to check for leaks. They are not designed to take that weight from the inside.

now THAT was a blast from the past for sure NF

Oh Lew you must take the ride. We are fortunate that the Hamilton airport is about 20 nautical miles from us. A few week ago I would bet that Bomber was here flying very low almost every day, maybe pre flights before heading your way. We can hear the Lancaster from 15 miles away at the least. Can you imagine being in a European city and hearing 20 or more of them heading towards you with all the escort fighters in the dead of night? Horrific. This post took me 20 minutes to type. Type away and see nothing on the screen, theen 20 letters show up for the same word. The cursbacks up 20 words so I have to kool at each and every word enreerede. I didn't edit the last seence or thas one. Frustrating. -

Stopped by Buddy's property today and see a livestock trailer parked outside Dunnville ON. His son and family evacuated the area of the French and could only bring the Family, 2 dogs and 6 Calves from the farm. They may have lost their home and 80 acre farm and 100 livestock. He is a mess. They are staying in a pop up. We read and hear of these things on the radio and TV but never think it can have happen to those we care about. He is one of our hard working farmers and has no idea what to do or the fate of his liveststock. All the help lines give a busy signal. What a cluster jamb. I can't imagine what I would do in the same situation, can't fathom it. A real time nightmare.

Minn Kota Power Drive 50 - troubleshooting
Old Ironmaker replied to Hack_Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Unfortunately many of the elec trollers are not repairable. It would cost me 1/2 the price for a new 55 lb thrust to repair a 23 year old. We live in a disposable culture these days. Anyone remember Vacuum Cleaner repair shops? Today if it's broke buy a new one. I was pulling into a Hortons in Simcoe the other day and a lowered Jhet black tricked out Chrysler 300 pulls in beside me, bling chromed 20" wheels, 400 watt stereo booming Hip Hop. Out comes 4 young Mennonites. Or 4 hip hopsters dressed as Mennonites. -
You can't fix stupid. *OPP on your phone will get the Leos. I know it was some time ago.

I also don't consider fuel consumption as the highest criteria on a list for a vehicle. Reliability, drivability, comfort, purpose and safety first. I got blasted here for saying just that on an old thread about mileage. By the way drove from Selkirk to north of Newmarket yesterday, 5.6 L/100K there in 4 banger Kia, bumper to bumper through TO on the way back 9.2L/100K. If I had to drive in that mess everyday I would lose it worse than I did yesterday. I would have to wear Depends. 2 exits before I could get off and find a discrete bush.

Come on John, I'm Old Ironmaker. I might not have my Metallurgical degree but I had a dozen that worked for me. Without the C in your equation nothing will smelt , burn, catch ablaze etc. Without Carbon nothing will catch fire, absolutely nothing. The Cave Men caught onto that. You are close, Fe+O2= FeO+Fe2O3. I have lit plenty of Iron and Steee

I would believe that at the Corporate level many things are kept from the consumer, not at the shop floor. A death is collateral damage and has a dollar value associated with it. G. Mech, yep not much evidence left t

No it's not unless it has oxygen and ignition (heat) to create combustion. C+O2=CO + CO2

Fish downstream of York this fall for Trout 10X that size. Then come for lunch and pick up your U.S. Divers flippers.

Thanks for the great response Raf. Believe it or not the truck is too big. I am close to 64 and parking it in a lot is a pain, if you look at my tailgate you can tell . It is the 4 door crew cab 4x4 2011 I bought new in 011'. The only spot it fits in is the Disabled spot and I won't use it if I can help it. I average 15 MPG. Up to a month ago all I did was a battery, tires and pads. At 139,000 kms the fuel pump went, brakes locked up on me and a fuel leak just yesterday. Time to let her go, I love the truck but it's time. Everything is 1000 bucks these days and I can 1000 buck myself to the poor house.

I presume FCA is Chrysler. I would drive a Challenger if someone gave me one. I have gone down the Chrysler road to pain too many times. Rams, YJ's, 300 and Intrepid, all pieces of poo.

Raf I am considering getting rid of the 1/2 ton Silverado and going into a Colorado. How do you like it. Looking at the specs it's all I need with the smaller boat and the occasional 2x4. Buddy has a Canyon and tows a 21' StarCraft everywhere. PM me if you wish, I can't send PM's but can get them.

Great set up and even better offer to share it Dan the Man. We got jacked up by a CO a few years ago on Quinte. I didn't save the receipt from the bait shop to prove what species where they came from and exactly how many we had. He wasn't very accommodating so didn't ask him what if I trapped them. We had 5 or 6 scoops, I couldn't tell him how many and I wasn't about to try and count them all as I didn't have a second bucket. He had us dump them on the road and kill them all. PRK. Just a warning to you guys. On a positive note I recently pulled a permit from the Aylmer MNR office , nice group of Women there and very accommodating.

G. Mech, has there been a root cause determined as to how a new truck goes up in flames? Somehow carbon came in contact with an ignition source, fuel leak, how? My Silverado came close to going up in a ball of flames in the heart of Gore Park in downtown Hamilton at 4 pm yesterday. I coming down the James St./Becket hill and notice no need for brakes. Come to a stop at St. Joes hospital and smell something burning and hear the brakes crunching. Front left caliper is stuck on and it's smoking, in bumper to bumper gridlock. Not even a place to pull over. I slam the brakes on and off and it frees up. Finally get to where I'm going downtown and buddy says I smell gas. Fuel line has a leak, that was a close one. Always carry a roll of Duct Tape, truck and boat. Got me to a garage 2 blocks away. As far as gas mileage, it sucks. Pulling the boat it sucks even worse. 40 bucks of gas to get to Hamilton and back to the lake, around 110 KMS. Maybe because the brakes are stuck on, that can't be good for fuel economy can it? I am impressed with some of the mileage you Ram guys are getting. 9.6L/100KMS ??? Better check the calculator, if that's correct it's unbelievable for any V8 let alone a truck. That's what my wife's 6 cyl. 3.5 lt 280HP Nissan Altima was getting. Now she's getting 6L to 7L/100kms on her new Kia Optima, but it's missing 4 cylinders.

Something I know a bit about. 1) Topwater. Early in AM and a few hours before dusk, the water doesn't need to be dead calm but I like it like glass. I use Rappala. 2)Tubes. When they are lockjawed I find tubes in natural colours best. Pumpkin seed, green metal flake and a tinge of blue. Softshell Crabs in Ont. have a blue tinge to them. 3)Jerkbaits. Many swear by them and they work. 4)Dropshot with live bait. This time of year a 2 or 3 in that is natural to the lake. By the fall I will use the biggest shiner I can find. 5) Spinners/Spinnerbaits. Black Fury is #1, #2 any mid size SB with Colorado blades. 6) Floating Rappala jerked across the surface. Art or Blue it took ma 20 minutes or more to type this

I got 28% from Madame LeBlanc in grade 12. My wife got 92% in French in Grade 12. I can carry on a so so conversation in Fort Coulange and she can't say hello in French.
