Great idea or recepie for disaster? Fishing related.
Old Ironmaker replied to moxie's topic in General Discussion
I wonder if you have to check your 50cal at the door. -
Big Brother is watching. A good honest bank robber needs to use a bike for a getaway car because cars have GPS to tell the cops where they are, they know where I am because they triangulate my cell phone, money has a tracking devise imbedded in it to track my c notes, my passport has a tracking chip in it so I can't sneak out of the country on a covert mission, they can see me when I'm on my PC, they can see all my xxx videos I made, my landline is bugged by the Organized crime unit because my name ends in a vowel, when I use my bankcard they know I'm buying chemicals to make meth, they monitor my emails, website use and tweets to combat terrorism and monitor my political subversive activities, I must tell them how many K's I put on my vehicles to get my sticker so my car insurance can go up, my fishing license actually sends a message to the ministry if I foul hook a fish, the GPS on my boat tells them I'm fishing in a sanctuary and records me taking more than the limit, now they will be able to mess with my wife by turning up the heat and lowering it thinking she is having hot flashes and I think the house is haunted by demons. Man I must be important. How do I know all this, I read it on OFC so it must be true.

Freeze to death or starve to death?
Old Ironmaker replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
Good for you, at the end of the year you have 12 cheques to show for it. If you don't have an agent PM me and I can recommend a great agent in Hamilton. All she sells are working mans homes, no McMansions and I know she will get you the best deal possible. I wish I knew you were in the market, she just sold Mom and Dad's home in Rosedale and the young couple that bought that place have a solid well maintained home. -

Ancaster Freshtrax? Man no matter what home you have there the property alone is worth, maybe worth isn't the word, costs what a nice 3 bedroom is going for in east Hamilton. I'd sell and head east young man head east. Big Cliff, a 3000ftsq home, that's a lot of cubic footage to heat, do we really need these large places? When I retired in 2000 we went from 3800 ftsq to a little over 900, there's only the 2 of us, that was stupid heating rooms I never stepped foot in. It's like the old adage if you need to ask what a Cadillac costs you can't afford the gas. I don't know if you have 6 kids there Cliff and it's none of my business but if you don't have a village of people there but if it's only the 2 of you or even 4 is 3000 square feet necessary really? I don't get it. A pal here has a 5 bedroom very large old leaky draughty farmhouse for his wife and himself as well as a 2000 sqft quanset hut, and he has a gas well on the property but due to a lack of pressure he heats one or the otherand complains about the cost to heat it, come on man!!!! -
The exact thing happened to me a few years back at a Hortons. I backed into a parked car on a dark rainy night. I looked at the Mazda I hit and couldn't see a thing. I went inside and asked if someone owned the Mazda. The lady behind the counter did, she told me she was going to call the police I couldn't convince her it wasn't necessary, she actually called 911, they flipped out on her. Anyway we exchanged insurance because there was a 4" scratch on the plastic bumper. I contacted my agent and told him what happened. Turned out the car was 2 weeks old. I had 2 choices, file a claim or pay for the repair. I took a picture on my cell phone that showed nothing, it was useless. I was told by my agent she had 1 year to file a claim. A month later I received a hand written note that looked like a 6 year old wrote asking for $1500.00 they wanted cash. Knowing her address from the insurance slip I found the car and took a pic of the scratch. I called her and told her husband I wasn't playing his game, take the car to any real body shop and give me a quote. They took it to the dealer and the dealer came back with a quote for around $500.00. No problem, repair the car and I would go to the dealer and pay them directly. They responded by telling me they would settle for $400.00, now I was pissed. I insisted they repair the car and I pay for it. Little did they know my cousin works at the dealership (they picked it, not me) and he told me they wanted them to buff it out and give them the difference in cash. Fraud plain and simple. I then got the OPP involved. A simple bump became a federal case. I then got my insurance company invoved for the principal alone. It cost me 500 bucks and they had some questions to answer to the OPP. It's getting me upset just remembering this thing. This guy doesn't have insurance, a valid license or both, get your insurance involved Cliff and let them deal with it, no matter what it was your fault, you backed into them. Lucky they didn't call an ambulance. As far as a $100.00 repair, it costs a hundred bucks to open the bay door for a body shop today.

To put it simply gas fitting isn't a DIY project, except a BBQ, don't ask me why, too many BBQ's I guess.

I've been married for 36 years, 3 different woman but still 36 years. I didn't get the code right the first 2. It was Sorry, I'm right, oh ya. -
Check with your local building dept. They will quote the code for gas or electric based on wall construction. I don't have my Ontario building code books handy, sorry. Some local codes may supersede provincial code. As far as the gas fitting you will be smart to have a qualified gas fitter to do it and sign off. If done as a DIY project and there is a catastrophic failure your insurance company will tell you to go pound salt when putting in a claim. Have seen it happen. Man here in Haldimand you need a permit to change a toilet believe it or not. You don't need a permit (maybe) but it needs to be done to code.

Freeze to death or starve to death?

Entropy asks "FN Crazy. Where can I go LIVE?", anywhere you wish my friend. To the millions living in refugee camps around this wonderful world of ours an individual living at or below the poverty line here in Canada live like King's to them. I've had the opportunity to travel pretty well to every continent on earth save Antarctica and there isn't anywhere else I would choose to be than here in Canada. Regardless of our flawed systems and fat steak eating politicos. Travel a bit, not to some resort in the Caribbean, to downtown Kingston Jamaica for example or a ghetto in Rio, Budapest, St. Petersburg Russia or Kouzestan Iran, then come home and kiss the frozen ground here in Canada. Not many realize how blessed we are. We all bash the governing party and it's leaders, who exactly voted these doe heads in? Not many will stand up and say I did! Vote them out to vote in a different bunch of doe heads. But regardless and granted there isn't much to choose from we all must vote. We get into a discussion like this sitting in the boat or icehut and guys complain. Asked if they vote and they say no way, I say you don't get to argue. -
Freeze to death or starve to death?

I find it difficult to believe that there are no social programs out there to assist those that are making a choice to freeze to death or starve to death. A few years ago I met a guy that was out of work and his EI had run out. This isn't a drug user or alcoholic this was a construction worker that was off work like thousands of others and got behind the 8 ball. No car, no cable, no internet, a $500.00 a month basement apt., no frills. Friends of his came to me to see what if anything I could do to help. I went to Dianne Finlay's office our MP and armed with a pile of outstanding bills, his EI papers and T4 from the previous years showing he was up until then a taxpaying citizen for the previous 30 years and showed her riding assistant. The first thing she did was set up a meeting with the local welfare office. His heat was back on within 2 days, his cupboard was stocked with staples from the local food bank, he received basic budgeting skills, they worked with his landlord and caught him up on rent. The boys sealed some the leaks and added some insulation in his small apartment. He drew welfare until he was called back to work and he hated it. It was just enough to pay the rent, keep the heat on at 62F and some lights on. He hated it. This was a proud guy that never thought he would need social assistance and was too proud to ask for help. I don't know where you got that info from Big Cliff but I find it hard to believe. Say what you want about our Gov., but no one is going to starve to death in Canada or freeze to death that asks for help and deserves it or not. All those that were on EI and ran out of benefits don't all end up on the streets begging for food and shelter. Those that are homeless are there mainly because of mental health issues, choose not to go on social assistance, or are using their social assistance to feed alcoholism and or a drug habit. That is a simplification I know but this is a fishing forum and I need to be somewhere shortly. Something is amiss here. There is help out there. -

You want to do a kitchen while living in a house, are you kidding me? Women don't like, wait, no one likes washing dishes in the bathroom and using a microwave in the bedroom. If you are serious about doing a kitchen while living in the place and you know you aren't great at finishing what you started PM me I have 3 divorce lawyers I used. A kitchen? come on man. 2 renos never done when you have time to work on them part time, a bathroom in a place that has 1 bathroom, a kitchen in a place that only has 1 kitchen. Those are jobs you send the family to the in laws and set aside 2 weeks or more to do with pro's helping you. Joey please help this kid before it's too late and he is on a legal forum looking for fair division of property advice. -

wYou have received some good information here and some not so good. The first point I'd like to address is the notion that kids get into more trouble in the city than the country. That's just plain not true, in fact I think the opposite. I've lived in some pretty rough parts of Hamilton and have been out in the country for 14 years full time. Kids in the country are bored out of their minds. When they get into trouble it's not petty it's usually big trouble. The highest rate of teen pregnancies are in rural areas. The small little quaint town of Dunnville has the highest per capita rates of drug abuse in southern Ontario. Crack and heroin just surpassed the use of Oxycontin as it is now cheaper to buy. Look at the drug and alcohol abuse amongst youth in our northern First Nation communities, can't get more rural than that. Kids in the country can't see any future for themselves, if they aren't educated it is clear to them they will have to move in order to find employment. There are only 2 McDonald's in the entire county and 4 Tim Horton, they can't even get a job there or be able to afford a car to get to a job if they had one, so they break and enter, steal cars and sell them to chop shops in the area, and there are many ready to buy. They buy contraband cigarettes and make a living selling them in the city. Grow dope in the back 40 of the family farms here, harvest and go to the city to sell it an ounce at a time. Please don't believe crime is less in the sticks, it's just not true unfortunately. As someone that has been married for 40 years I think I qualify to be Dr. Phil on the subject of marriage. Especially since I've been married to 3 different women and my research data isn't compromised by only one test subject. You talk about fighting, there can not be any fighting, this is a partnership, each partner has an opinion and that opinion must be respected. Why is your wife so adamant on a turn key home. Has she seen any behavior that has swayed her to an uncompromising situation. Is her father a person that didn't finish what he started? Or a previous relationship that went south because of something similar? Have you shown any behavior that tells her you will never finish a reno on time? There has to he a reason. If you are as good in reno's as you say you are you will be able to clearly see if the work done before is above standard just by looking at the workmanship and materials used. Happy wife, happy life. What about this as a compromise? Buy the turn key house, live in it and make it a home, big difference between a house and a home. I know money is probably tight but look to the future and put away enough money to buy a project home flip it, prove to her what you can do. You can do this with an investing partner or two. There are people out there that will fund it if you can prove you are the guy to partner with. Regardless what people say real estate flips are still doable today. The real estate market is bullish. I just ,sold my parents home in east Hamilton in January for 30K more than 5 real estate experts said was market value and 5K above asking price. My business partner and myself are shopping now for a flip. We are probably going to buy a lakefront property on Erie as our next project. There was recent sale here that went for $535.00 a square foot believe it or not. There are investors out there, you have to find them. Knock on some CPA's doors, they have investors looking to make more than a few percent in savings accounts, go to mortgage brokers that have clients looking to invest as well. You put a portfolio under your arm to show what you have done and go knock on some doors. If you don't have a record of achievements no one will invest in you so start making one today. There are many ways to do this as well of you indeed do have a history of reno's. Compromise, make her happy, never fight, discuss with passion but never fight. I'm a bit worried for you. Not knowing were you are your budget of 150K won't get you a fixer upper within 150K of Toronto, it might get you a lot to build on. I looked at a grow op house the other day seized by the OPP, the bank is asking 233K as is. There is another in the same town for 189K and needs about 60K minimum, and that's not going with granite counter tops and porcelain tile. a similar place new is only 265K so that's not an option for a flip Johnny d -
Exactly what venture isn't a cash grab? That's the idea behind our system of capitalism, getting the most sales revenue coupled with minimal cost and demanding the highest price the market will bear in order to maximize profit. I wouldn't want to be the CEO of a company telling the board "well ladies and gentlemen we could have made more money but we wanted to give the consumer a break this quarter." Oh I'm fired, wow, may I ask as to why? Heck young Christopher K knows that. In times where demand exceeds supply the formula was COST PLUS PROFIT = PRICE, now its PRICE MINUS COST =PROFIT OR LOSS.

After I said 23 years ago I would never go back to the "Want to build a Mansion in Muskoka Show " oops I mean Sportsman show I succumbed to peer pressure and went back. I was right 23 years ago. Let's see 20 bucks to park, 25 for the opportunity to go shopping, another 125 in fuel, and that's Rez price. A hot dog for 8 bucks, I didn't even look to see what a 10 dollar draught beer looks like, please, come on man. Bass Pro, Sail Store or Gander Mountain even provides free parking. The days of walking around and filling bags of free swag are long gone. For some that weren't alive in the 70's you could walk around and fill bags full of lures, line, terminal tackle, discount cards for fish camps. I had the first Ultralight rod and reel in the gang, $5.00, I payed $5.00 and still use it. We saw some great demonstrations by pro's from the dogs to getting bombed with good old Red Fisher. You didn't need to drink with him to get a buzz, just smelling his breath would get you tipsy. A new skinny kid with hair doing trick casts into the giant aquarium, what was his name??????? Bob Isuzu or something, nice kid. But we told him get a day job, no one is going to pay you to fish for a living for goodness sakes, his brother was there too, tall guy, he was telling him the same thing. That's a true story. My buddy knew them from Waterdown I think. Save your money, stay away in my opinion, save it for the fishing show. I knew I should have stayed home, could have out that money towards a new rod and reel.

Man oh man, scary. I don't think the oncoming trucker (truck #1) that was passing saw the poor guy (truck #2) until around the 9 second mark in the video. At 3 seconds you first see both headlights of truck #1. At 9 and10 seconds truck #1 driver veers slightly to his right thus averting a head on collision. If I can see his lights he can see mine. From the video there was at least 7 seconds that the oncoming trucker #1 continued heading strait into the path of the truck #2 with the camera. I don't think truck #1 realized there was any danger because he didn't notice truck #2 until he veered slightly to his right. Was he drive dreaming, hand on the wheel and mind somewhere else. I know driving on a white snow covered road mesmerizes me sometimes on a long drive. After retiring I had the opportunity to do a round trip with a buddy that long hauls south for whatever load he can get down and back. Because of that trip I now have the greatest of respect for these guys and gals hauling 53 foot trailers. We had close calls exactly when my pal said we would. Just before we hit the Cumberland pass he warned me to watch out. Right on cue we had some close calls. Being me I tried to analyze why. Heading east in the morning into the sun, going from night to day is a time accidents both on and off the road happen coming off night shift?. Watching the striped lines? Many factors I'm sure have been studied in depth by some. My buddy made some stupid moves himself. He was downing beans like they were breath mints. Drank a gallon off coffee a day. Drove when he was too tired to talk straight. I don't know how they do it, and it's not a very well paid career based on the hours alone. Using the Ontario Labor Act I calculated if he was paid $20.00 an hour plus what he would have qualified for OT he would have tripled what he made after expenses as it's his own rig. But like I said since that trip I sure have a new respect for you guys and gals and keep my distance and give the rigs plenty of room now. Hurry up and stop seems to be the mentality, speeding only gets you to your stop a few minutes before you would have gotten there doing the speed limit. Why die for an extra cup of coffee. I wouldn't be so hard on the guy as I'm sure he didn't realize he was even in danger let alone anyone else, who would consciously do what he did? Leaving the scene is something else, he was conscious of that and the book should be thrown at him for just that alone, I agree.

I've eaten Reindeer in Finland, it tastes just like,,,,,,, deer. On the menu in every restaurant but McDonald's. Tar soup isn't very good I can tell you. Was served horsemeat in the 70's, thought it was Moose. Lean and a bit tough.

Good decision going to the 115, for a grand it is a no brainer. Congratulations and welcome aboard.

There is a difference between Marine speakers and traditional other than being waterproof. The banging and bouncing off the water can effect the speaker and power components over the long run. Many have saved money just putting in a car audio system only to remove it when it was dead half way through the season. Boat TV had a feature on audio systems specific for marine application if I remember correctly. I'd hate to see a wireless speaker fly through the air when hitting a wave. Do they float?

Cold Calls - Car Dealership???? NF
Old Ironmaker replied to Headhunter's topic in General Discussion
The Ontario Gov do not call list is a law that has no teeth. Telemarketer managers think it's a joke. My brother manages one of these offices for a national company. There has never been a charge laid by the Crown for calling someone on the list I'm told, it's a joke. I go into one of my many accents and confuse and frustrate the caller to no end until they hang up, then they put me on their do not waste your time with this guy list. Brother says they have one. No need to look at the incoming number, if I have to say hello more than once you know that their system identifies a connected call, routes it to a telemarketer that takes a few seconds before they say hello. If you are in the phone book, use your initials for first name, when they ask for Mr. J.A. Doe you know it's right from the phone book. Never enter a draw for a free new car, vacation or the like. They make the money selling entrants info to telemarketers. The telemarketers with the largest data base on the ones hired as subcontractors. Just remember before you are very rude, these people are working crazy hours at minimum wage without benefits to earn a living. Off shore telemarketer are paid pennies. For those in Canada, and the trend is to bring these jobs back from Asia, they are not drawing social assistance, usually, and are paying taxes. As I said before not the greatest way to earn a living but at least they are working. Not everyone has the means or ability to get a post secondary education, with manufacturing jobs going to those with University degrees this, and fast food is about all that's left. -
Of course you pay to park in your own driveway. From property taxes to the tag on your vehicle and the comprehensive insurance in case a tree falls on it, don't worry we all pay, nothing free Fisherman. The idea to charge for parking in a tourist area is contrary to what most all tourist areas do. Voted down putting meters in Dunnville and Port Dover. Actually even suggesting Dunnville is a tourist area is ludicrous, but with the Grand River there someone may stop and visit the new Giant Tiger not the Giant Mudcat. Sorry Fishmaster. They remove meters to encourage tourism not install them. I wonder what in the hell council is thinking up there.
-
We hit a few Mom and Pop carpeting stores when looking 2 years back to do a pals boat. Found a great deal as the smaller places don't want inventory sitting around. Around 20 a meter I believe. I used the left overs to do my trailer bunks and rails. You have time shop around. Had them pour some water on it and waited, no leak through. Good luck.

Takes some pics of them tomorrow Big Cliff. Wonder what they are? Mullet? Did you get a copy of the South Carolina fishing regs? If in season get a few Sea Trout, great eating. Casting float, a few split shot, smaller hook and a live shrimp. About 3 foot lead. Caught a nice Bat Ray fishing for trout with the same setup. Good 20 minute fight on medium spinning gear. You can always eat the left over bait. In Fla. Allowed 2 rods, one sits cast the other. They fight like mad, like well a trout. Glad your having fun, I should be down Fla. the first or so of Feb. Calling for -32 wind chill tomorrow. Stay safe.

Beauty machine and nice sled set up. We built a sled a few years back. To reduce total weight we used a few of those plastic tote containers from Wally World. Then learned to put a few straps on the lids attached to the box as they have a tendency to blow away, a long way away. Kid's getting big too. Fishing here at Long Point Bay is hit and miss. Also some hazardous holes where machines and huts have gone through out there not marked if anyone venturing out. Be careful anywhere.
-
Man you missed Dirty Ernie's Biscuits and Gifts near Beckley on 77. Don't go back. As far as how far south can you drive? Well you can go as far as the southern most tip of South America in Brazil of you want. Be safe.

Love the application, not many teens however would be able to fill it out, it's a piece of paper not a touch screen thing. Since we were all boys, and did what boys did later in life were all blessed with daughters, Devine payback? We had a fun thing we all did. My brothers would insist a niece bring the kid over on Sunday to the family home to say hello. Before date one. She would have go around the big table and introduce everyone, this is my Godfather Uncle Cheech, this is my Godfather Uncle Santino, this is my Godfather Uncle Felice, etc. We all played it up, whispering in each others ear talking in riddles and code. Of course if we knew we had a new victim we all were sure to drive or borrow the Caddies and have fun like saying Uncle Joey couldn't be here because he's away at University, yea for 7 to 10. They couldn't wait to get out of there, but not before of course our mother insisted they sit down and eat. Some never made it through the dinner, some never asked for the first date. Some are hanging around 20 years later with kids of their own, maybe too afraid to leave.
