On that trip to the Rock were we didn't make it that far the places we stayed that were 100 bucks was cheap. They wanted close to $200.00 a night near Lunenburg. Heck we went to a wedding last fall in Hamilton and paid 120 bucks for a budget room on Centennial Parkway with tax. I had to find someone in the middle of the night to get more blankets as it was freezing in there. No luck thank goodness my wifes winter survival box in the car had a sleeping bag in it. 120 bucks and you need to bring your own blankets. Some budget, at least it came with a door and a lock. I remember a lot of displaced Nova Scotian's and Newfs from work would take the ferry from Bar Harbor Maine to get there. Is it still done? I know it cuts off plenty of driving hours. The ferry can't be too cheap now though. I don't think, no I know I will never drive down east again. Pushing it for me would be a minimum of 3 nights each way now as my wife freaks driving on the highway for a long jaunt for some reason. That would get expensive getting a room for 6 nights plus fuel.

A Maintenace tip for transducers/ almost NF
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I was always told never to cut a transducer wire. I am now told it is done all the time on digital units not analogue and can be rewired if you have good solder skills. I don't know if they exist but it would be nice to be able to have a transducer that plugs in just like on the main unit. I know I don't want to fish in a new line, what a pain it was on my Star Craft with the live wells to bypass. I was ready to drill holes in them. Off topic because this is my thread so there. I had the lakeside windows and doors open and put a spring jacket on and headed out. I went down the road 300 meters to a pals. When I got out of the truck it felt like I fell through the ice. North wind blowing like mad and it was -10C. What a difference wind can make, especially in the spring. The boys headed out on Lake O without me a few days ago and only lasted an hour on the lake because of the cold wind and not dressed for it, you can always take clothes off but can't put them on if you don't bring it. Serves then right for not taking me. -
A Maintenace tip for transducers/ almost NF

It's funny I posted the exact same thread on a mostly American forum and was told I was nuts. Transducers don't loose accuracy. OK then that's that. Oh, and Donald Trump is going to be the greatest Prez since Georgie Washington. -
Yes Cliff vacationing ain't cheap today. With just the cost of fuel it gets expensive fast. Years ago we would rent a motor home and the boys and I would go down to Myrtle beach for golf for 2 weeks. Some of the parks outside of town the hookup prices they wanted were ridiculous during peak times. And with 4 grown men in the RV it was getting too tight, real tight. A flight, rental and a huge condo and golf package was actually less per person and we kyboshed the RV thing. For me just lugging a towel and toiletries to the common shower was getting old fast and I was much younger and fit. RV traveling isn't any less money today than a traditional trip i.e. fly, rent a car and stay at B&B's that are well over 100 bucks per night comes out about even driving a RV or car to any tourist destination there and back. A friends Dad and Mom who are exactly your age bought a massive RV 10years back and would drive to Texas to winter every year towing a small car. 3 years ago he sold it as they found it too tough making the long drive. A return flight ( with some stops) is less expensive than the cost for them to drive down and back. That's what they do now. They bought a car and keep it at their trailer there.

Yep he knows his crap. Some folks don't know how to take him. Good call on the Elite. I hear they are hitting Walleye now on the river at LSC and all the way down to Detroit. I haven't been as I said but it sure sounds challenging. Hope to eventually, especially LSC in the fall for multiple numbers of big fat Musky, everyday they say. The plan is this fall come hell or no water. If you want to talk about the leaks PM me. Did a big box rivets on a StarCraft a few weeks back. Putting the floor back in later today I hope. Johnny D

Big Cliff, a few years back we were planning a Newf. trip and got side tracked. I contacted the Provincial tourism folks and they sent us copious amounts of info by mail. I like reading from a magazine rather than a screen at times. You know the commercial where it says call "Irene" or somebody that is still on once and a while, I called the number and sent the package tout suite. We only got as far as Cape Breton where we could spend a year there in Nova Scotia. Her sister lived there then. We rented an SUV in Halifax and did that coast 360 degrees. I brought a few rods and reels and assorted tackle and caught plenty of fish from docks, streams and bridges etc. I did have a few opportunities to go on the local Cod boats and hand line them but never got to as we were so busy for 2 1/2 weeks. I can fish everyday here at home so I compromised with my wife which was good. I still want to hit Newfie Land. Only changed flights in Gander once. I don't want to get personal but what kind of "fancy restraints" are you talking about? I think that's for a different website.

NF... man cocked and loaded on grandmas road...

Wow, keep us updated. We had an incident the other day at the Cayuga Bridge rebuild over the Grand River, nothing serious. I guess not everyone got the memo that the Haudnososne Business Disruption, I mean Development, group gave the province the all go because they got pieced off to continue work on a job that was supposed to take a year and we are going on year 11. I was typing this when you were too, glad all is well, for now. Was it domestic or political Rick? -
Makes you think twice about talking the boat out. At 2:07 I call it "Johnny D docking the Bassassin". At 2:21 is "Wormdunker in the crane cab", he is driving all those cranes in this clip actually. My favorite is at 2:37, I gotta get me one of those.

I have spoken to Joselyn a few times. If there is a question about sonar he doesn't know it hasn't been invented yet. He is the go to guy. What is his opinion? That would be interesting to know. If you fish Erie and haven't heard of Joselyn you are new here on Erie, he is a legend when it comes to electronics. Angler Outfitters, Woodstock ON.

Looking to pay someone/place to reassemble my lower unit.
Old Ironmaker replied to Smokercrafty's topic in General Discussion
If you can wait a few months we can do it. My sis-in-law lives in New Market and I'm sure she is coming down to the lake for a visit soon. You would need to pick it up and go for some monster Walleye or Smallies here with me while your at it, by the time we limit out the boys should have it all done. I don't know how that's going to play out since it's only our hobby here. I don't know how that's going to play out! -
I don't know if I read it here or another forum but someone passed on some info that may help boaters. While trailering the boat transducers should be protected from scratches incurred by road debris that will effect the signal to your unit. Simply cover the transducer with a sock to prevent scratches. Sounds logical to me. An easy and cheap way to keep them clean. A right hand sock for starboard and a left sock for the other side. Apparently Humminbirds are more prone to scratching of which I have one. edit: It was Steve here on the thread about Humminbird vs, Lorance. Thanks Steve.

It's not Rocket Science Smokey. A socket wrench and the right parts and 3M 5200 sealant and you are good to go. If I can do it anyone can. You Tube is actually a good resource. While you have the bottom end apart change the impellor. A great resource also is iboats.com. Ask the question there and you will get answers on a DIY for your specific engine. I am Old Ironmaker there too. -
Blizz I sent you a PM. Beside the story I told you in the PM that is personal I'll add this one. Many of us here have lost family through their service to our country. My Grand Father took shrapnel to the head in WW1 serving for the Crown and had medieval surgery then to put a plate covering his skull and he couldn't talk when I met him in 60'. He was interned at Camp Pettawawa in 1939 until the end of WW2 as an enemy of the Crown. There aren't enough question marks here to put at the end of that sentence. Not one red cent in reparations. Man Blizz, you aren't the only person here with a hard luck story. Go see your brother, you said you had the $$ to last month and put an end to this thread. I'm the guy that says what everyone else is thinking.
-
Not out of line. I agree 110%. If I had to hijack a go cart to see my family I would. This is getting ridiculous. It is an internet fishing forum for goodness sakes, not Dr. Phil but is starting to feel like it.
-
I'm with M2B2, go and see your brother. You said before you have the money to do it in a different thread. Your brother said not to come because I believe he was thinking about the burden on your family. Go see him before it's too late. Maybe it's just me but I don't think an internet forum is the place to seek advice on a personal matter as delicate and personal such as this. Please, just my opinion right or wrong. I am more than a bit old fashioned. I am most likely wrong here.

The marinas are probably all booked right now for at least through May. Too far for you to come this way I'm sure. I know the East Lake, or is it west, Hospital is just under 3 hours from us one way. You would have to leave it for a few days as we are swamped here too getting our boats ready. In January, Feb. no problem, spring is the worse time to get marine work done, sorry. -
Yes talk to the administrator, Gen. Manager etc. not some receptionist. Voice recognition technology, I don't think so. Going to the media isn't going to get you to talk to your brother. It will only become confrontational if it hasn't already.

We miss the warm water discharge from the Nanticoke Hydro plant. Shut down now for about 4 years. When you dropped a line you never knew what was going to hit. April was Silver Bass time, big ones. You call them White Bass. I am not going to miss the Browns this year on the west end of Lake Ontario. Do you think the same tactics and presentations at the west end of the lake between Grimsby and Dalhousie would it be the same as where you guys went or go? Oh and a great report from 2012 there ehg, thanks.

Or those fish are so old they lost their teeth. My first Muskie was caught on a Mepps Black fury and 8 lb. mono trolling for Pickerel. I never get bit off here on Erie as I have never seen a pike caught where we fish, Long Point Bay yes actually they are fishing there for Pike already. Akrisoner, I really like those rigs. I need to send a note to my family in NY and see if they are available at Gander Mountain in Tonawanda. It's less than a few hours away from me. edit: not available at Gander Mtn. according to site.

We can no longer get soft shell crabs here but they are deadly almost to the point of being not fair for Smallies. And at the price they were charging hooking a Sheepshead drove me insane, more insane. I did have the kids down the laneway catch me them and even they were starting to charge outrageous prices. Good point not over thinking the dropshot method, a weight on the bottom and a hook tied onto a line. Can't get much simpler than that. I really had to laugh when I saw specific "Dropshot" weights being sold and not cheap either. The cheapest "dropshot" weight is when I Gorilla glue a Robertson on the bottom of my line or tie it on well just as you would tie on a snelled hook on a harness. Hard to get a snag and when it does I just break it off. I like the green deck screws myself.

I have 2 sets of watches. I switched to summer watches last Sunday. I'm serious. Not that I know what day it is but I do know how late I will be, like today to get new tires. I'll be there when I get there.
