Is a vehicle lost through the ice covered by Insurance?
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
If an agent or broker says "yes", or even better "I don't see why not" take our insurance guru Terry's advice and get it in writing. That's all I'm saying. Look at Woodsman's post above this one. Perfect example. Policies can differ greatly for each provider. You need to be a Bay St. lawyer to understand my property damage coverage for this lakefront place. 1 in 100 year storm vs. a 1 in 50 year storm, elevation of dwelling from water level, break wall or not, construction of building, i.e. Hurricane bracing and on and on. Assume you aren't covered and then ask if you are and get it in writing. Did you know that coverage for loss by damage from fire may be dependant on how close a tree limb is from your roof if your neighbours place sets your place on fire. A former employee of mine got a registered letter saying he had "X" amount of time to clean his property up or he would not be covered for personal liability to second parties or fire damage. We are talking about the rural farmer that has 20 abandoned vehicles, old trailers, motorhomes, boats. Right down to the 6 cords of seasoned firewood piled against the wall of his house. I know someone is going to call Bull, but it's 110% true I tell ya, they are getting tougher and tougher, especially out here in rural country. I have heard of folks getting a similar letter because they were in need of a new roof. I do not like insurance providers. Like Yogi Berra said. "Ya don't need it if ya got it and don't have it when ya need it." -
Is a vehicle lost through the ice covered by Insurance?

All I know for an absolute certainty is that I'm not covered whether through collision or comp. I don't need it regardless. I started this thread to create some awareness only. I am a member of a small mutual here in rural country. My agent is my broker and he is the claims adjuster here and wears a few other hats as well to keep our rates as low as possible. The few agents we have are not paid a commission I'm told. After years of working out of an old cold and leaky shoebox we built a very nice Georgian style building overlooking the Grand River, with cash on hand. The large conference room can be reserved by members and local non members for community meetings or get togethers for members only for no charge. -
99% of the shows out there are 30 minute infomercials. I cancelled WFN years ago. Very well said. If you are that bored go fishing or ask an elderly neighbour if you can do a few chores for them.

Severn river pike and walleye and channel cats
Old Ironmaker replied to Shloim's topic in General Discussion
Sheldon, buy a bag of uncooked shrimp. Set a line up with a heavy egg sinker above a fluorocarbon leader of 2 feet or so and a circle hook. Find a hole next to a bank in faster current. Toss it in and wait for the Cat to take it. Remember "not" to set the hook. Let her take it for a count of 5 and reel the slack out and pull up on the rod. Where there are multi species I have only caught Cats on a shrimp in fresh water. Unlike worms etc. you can eat whatever bait is left over. -

Are you positive? -
I told the meat manager at Food Town last year that they needed to open another dept. next to the meat dept. A loans department. I said I used to shop for meat now I window shop. The prices are ridiculous. M2B2 and I talked about this last week. I have no idea a young family can live with food prices today. A small bunch of green onions that looked more like chives were $1.69 a very small bunch. I'm going to be very thin in a few years on my pension the way it's going. Perch going for 18 bucks a pound now in Pt. Dover. Saw NY strip yesterday for 26 bucks a pound, hello meat loaf.

A rhetorical question. This was discussed here a few times and I asked that question to my broker last year. We had our annual review of coverage today and I reminded him I asked him last year but he never got back to me. It wasn't a answer I readily needed as I knew I wasn't going onto the ice ever again with any of my vehicles. The simple answer I got was a definite no. Same with the snow machine, no coverage for loss through the ice unless I as driving on a roadway and lost control and went into a river etc. Many folks here drive on the ice. I would get a definite answer in writing from your broker before you do it again, car, truck, ATV or snow machine. He said there are policies that will cover loss through the ice like on those ice roads north. But it ain't cheap. Check to be 110% certain.

A Maintenace tip for transducers/ almost NF
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
Good to know we can cut and splice on a new transducer. I have come to learn accuracy is the accuracy of depth and not sensitivity. -
I hear you, I was one of those kids that didn't have a 5 point harness and drove in a car with 4 adults smoking unfiltered L&M's. We had a 59' Chevy station wagon that had the rear set facing the car behind you with the window cranked open. We survived somehow but since then we have evolved as a species too. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Idiot. I don't see where charges are pending. They have to charge the guy and convict him of stupidity. Some of the things I see is amazing. Last summer in Hamilton a guy had no less than 8 kids riding in the back of his pickup truck. I had him pull over and he did. He didn't speak a word of English nor did his 2 passengers in the cab. I guess that's something that is done overseas according to a teen riding in the back.

That's a relief, thanks for the update. This happened around 3:41 PM and we didn't get the Amber Alert until exactly 9:36 PM. Why not earlier I wonder? Then it was only once unlike a few weeks ago when it came on every 30 minutes or so. If the child was left in a running car the duffus should be charged with Child endangerment. I didn't find anything in the news this AM about it. Any links to the story. I don't want to hang the parent until I get more info.

I love the duct cleaning call. We don't have ducts we have geese. I do have to remember these folks are doing a job to pay the bills, a crappy job but at least they are working and not thieving except the scammers. I love when they do call from offshore somewhere and struggle in English and tell you their name is "Scott" or "Alice", yea right Scott. I just tell them hold on I'll get him and yell "John, phone's for you", then put it next to the TV and leave it there. When I did have a land line I was in the book as J.A. Di**????****. When someone called asking for Mr. J.A. I knew they got it from the phone book, same as mail to J.A. Di&&&^^7000. Easy way to screen unsolicited calls and mail.

It's about time someone isn't reporting someone else ripping them off. I think good people like the folks that helped without being asked to exist but unfortunately we never hear about them much. Did you ever find out who helped you? A good opportunity to pay it forward. I had a few of the boys from Hamilton here for lunch last week. They wanted to buy some farm fresh eggs so I took them to a local farm that sells them out of a fridge. They couldn't believe you just left your money and took what you bought. There was about 30 bucks in the plastic container left unattended and they just were amazed no one would take all the money and the eggs.

What a great post from Jayess. He should be working for the Newfoundland and Labrador dept. of Tourism. That's enough info for me to spend a year there.

Afford a ticket? Those poor folks can't afford a CD. I go every 4 or5 years and bring a suitcase full of stuff for the folks at the hotel. I always bring as much tackle as I can fit in my bags. You would flip if you saw the hooks these people use to fish with. Rusted, worn down, it's sad. I bring cheap mono and old tackle for them and you would think I gave them a new car. I brought 2 old baseball gloves there a few years ago and gave them to a bartender I met to give to his sons, he cried like a baby. If you ever go down what ever you bring for them is like winning a lottery for the working folks. The only ones going to that concert are the elites from the Government or the 1% that have 99% of the wealth. Not an average working Cuban, no way, no how. That notion is ridiculous. As far as health care I can tell you they are in good care at least. I broke my hand years ago and had better care than I would have had here. Cost? nada. edit: Oh don't get me going about Cuba, do you know that if a Cuban citizen gets caught with a Caribbean Rock lobster in their position they can be imprisoned for 5 years? Lobsters are for us tourists. It's like being beamed down on another planet if you get off the resort and spend some time there. I have a pal that has lived there for 35 years and spent time with him off the reservation. He pays 400 bucks a month for a 2 bedroom apt. and that includes maid service. He makes his money exporting cigars to the US. The embargo was a joke.

Fly to Halifax and buy an older van, vehicles are cheaper out there. Sell it when you are done or drive it back and sell it for a profit. Fed Ex your stuff to Halifax and Fed X it back home. Like I said think outside the box.
-
I guess flights to Newfieland are dear. A flight from Hamilton to Halifax is cheap. The last time I went 2 years ago was 350 return each from Hamilton on West Jet. Less than the price of gas let alone rooms and wear and tear on the car. I wouldn't take my 4X4 that was under warranty because of the fuel cost and the car is getting up there in K's and I worry about a breakdown. Heck a tranny now is 4 grand or more. So now I always fly and rent where ever I go. Years ago I flew to California and did the US 1 coastal highway for a 4 week break. Bought a nice classic for $1000.00 bucks in Sacramento and registered it and then insured it from here, on the way to the airport I sold it at a lot for 600 bucks cash. Think outside the box.

Why are they going there now? Great Briton never had a trade embargo with Cuba as Canada didn't either. I have been to Cuba many times since 1975. Many items on the shelves in Habana with Our Compliments and Presidents Choice on the label. Why now?

At 9:36 PM. Bell TV took you to channel 1911 automatically. From TO Police services. I hope it all worked out as there was no further alert after the 1st one. Turned on the TV in the bedroom a few hrs latter and it was on ch. 1911. Did you get it too?

Old Ironmaker replied to misfish's topic in General Discussion
The deal of the day, week, year? Great deal. People wonder why I hang around here. There's a good reason why. This isn't just a forum, we are a community like the title says. -
What are you talking about "US old guys" you have 9 years on me. The way things are going with my body this past winter I don't think I will nor will I want to see 70. No I want to see 90 like my Dad who will be 89 in a few weeks. He can out work me today I bet. It's not age but quality of life. My brother takes after Dad and I take after my 85 year old mother. Not fair. I got her Diabetes and 5 types of Arthritis and degenerative bone desease and he got her head of hair, thick as concrete and black as the Ace of Spades, not fair I say, not fair whatsoever.

I'm servicing my wife 24 hours a day. What you are thinking of doesn't take but a few minutes, maybe.

Good for you Cliff, go. I haven't met anyone that came back to life yet once they left this Earth, not even Jesus as promised. They don't live in motel rooms. They can hardly afford where they do live. Sad state the folks out east live in. Not fair at all. When a few guys that worked at Sydney Steel moved west to Hamilton they doubled their wages and benefits. Many worker here for 30 years sold their homes here and moved back the day after they retired. For what they got for a home here they could buy a mansion there and their pensions gave them a very good life. I actually thought hard when a had an opportunity to buy a place on Mahon Bay. Near where they film that show about the pirate treasure hunt on Oak Island. 10 acres. 400 feet of oceanfront, nice 3 bedroom house and huge barn/shop. $60000.00 in 2000. My brother in law said way too much money!!! We didn't because I realized they get 4 months of good weather, maybe. A 4 foot snow fall is nothing there. That same property 16 years latter is going for the same money. If it was around here with that much lakefront it would be well over 600K but it isn't.
