It appears that I have a little bit of work to do here. Not to worry. My apologies to Stoty for locking his thread.

The main purpose is to keep your bait cleaner longer so you waste less time cleaning weeds off you lures. The rod in the water picks up weeds so that they don't travel down your line to your bait. Also, if you're fishing close to the boat, your bait will travel a couple of feet deeper compared to what it would if you had the rod in a standard trolling position. ps. There are no dumb questions.

You have a Lund 1800 Fisherman and a 150HP Yamaha. Get yourself the load guides. The 2 foot models should be good. As for a transom saver, they cost $50-$60. Get one. Don't be using a chunk of firewood to protect your investment. The peace of mind alone is worth it.

If it's that, it a relatively easy fix and you've saved yourself a reel. You can still buy a new one but you'll at least have a backup.

Could reel lubricant have gotten onto the carbon fiber drag washers?

Could the braid have dried enough to slip on the spool?
