  1. My friend and I both have 2hp Yamahas. Last year, for the first time ever since using these motors (1993) we ran into carbon problems and gummed up spark plugs that forced us to take the plugs out and clean them - they would foul up again within 20 minutes of running the motors. We bought new plugs and this spring, the same thing. The lodge owner told us to try some of his AMSOIL additive. It worked. Actually, the motors never ran better. I'll be using them again this fall -we'll be using the same additive or buying premium gas. WR
  2. I've been on the creek with my kayak - it's a bit deeper by the hwy bridge 12ft +/-. There are a few spots at the upstream meanders where the depth can reach 10ft. But overall the creek is shallow and you can catch catfish, carp, sheepshead, silver bass and the odd rock bass or perch. If the lake is real calm, you could venture offshore a bit for perch - I've caught them fishing off the beach at the provincial park. Good luck.
  3. I only fished it once many moons ago and only got smallies before a huge thunderstorm hit - haven't been back since (80's); as for bait, I think the following bait and technique would work. I would try using worm harnesses (go-getters). I usually troll them on the French and nearby on the Pickeral - I would think that they would work on Restoule as well. I find weedbeds and troll the outside of them in 14ft of water. I let out plenty of line with 2 no.4 split shots and a fluor. orange go-getter with a worm. Line test is 6lb.
  4. Go Knights Go! It would have been nice if the JLC was opened up for the game & let a crowd watch the game on the scoreboard- It's likely occupied for some other event. WR
  5. We had a black bear down here in London a few years ago - the police shot it too. Their first priority is public safety. Generally, they are young males looking for new turf. It also wasn't that long ago that a moose was running loose around the Sarnia area - I think the same thing goes for them; young males looking to expand their territory. Now only if I can get the 2 young college males that inhabit my house,.....
  6. Hey Warthaug, the pickeral and pike season opens up again on the London Thames on the second Saturday in May - that was last Saturday. There are resident walleye and pike throughout this part of the Thames. There should be silver bass coming up the Thames soon - you can nail them with silver Mepps. WR
  7. Nice report. Spending quality time with your kids is something that they will always remember. I used to take my kids canoeing/fishing there - it's a real gem.
  8. Nice fish and nice pups! Did the early bird catch the worm or were the fish biting later in the morning? I find that later in the day is best both for traffic and fish - I was on a stream with no one else around except for footprints of the early risers.
  9. I believe that I saw a show about them on River Monsters on OLN. They are knocking at Ontario's door. They have been caught in Pennsylvania and Illinois. I hope they taste good with some Cajun Fish Crisp. I googled "snakehead" and some of the sites reaffirmed what the tv show showed. I'm going to need some kevlar waders.
  10. I have used Aqua Seal with excellent success on my 20 year old plus hip waders WR
  11. I too remember the good old smelt days off the pier at Pt Stanley when I was a kid. Some nights you couldn't lift the net cause there were so many smelt in there. Smelt are still around but not like they were in the 60's and 70's. I have been dipping my dad's vintage 6' x 6' smelt net (bought in the 60's at CTC) off the pier at Bruce. I have been getting enough for a few feeds of smelt every spring. A lot more work but it is nice to get out. WR
  12. Pink is my go-to colour for roe bags. If roe isn't working I try a pink Gulp worm. I use a 10 size hook. Nice info Aaron! WR
  13. I have a Fujifilm XP20 - it is waterproof. I have a floater strap with it. I take it with me on back lake canoe trips. Pictures have been decent. It sells for around $180 (I got mine through airmiles)
  14. I look forward to the Sail store giving a little competition to BPS. I got a battery and charger for my humminbird fishfinder for my yak for $10 less at Sail (in Ottawa) than BPS. Also picked up some blackbird floats for the steelhead season that were 20% cheaper at Sail than BPS. Oh well, another candy store to stop at on the way up north!
  15. My condolences Shawn. I would rather remember a passed loved one during their better times. My dad was in ICU for 13 days before he passed & my in-laws were in ICU for a week before they passed on the same weekend - I wouldn't want any of those images posted on FB. Those images are still quite vivid in my memory. WR
  16. I believe that Bryer's was once Waverly Lodge. I stayed at Waverly back in the late 1980's (before kids). It was clean and well-kept back then. There was a small bay off the main bay across from the lodge that was pretty good for bass and pike. We went back to the Wolsley Bay area a few springs ago - didn't have much luck other than hammerhandles and small bass. We stayed at Wolsley Lodge & took in the Friday night buffet (Harald insisted that we try it) - it was a real good feed especially since fish wasn't on the menu for that trip. WR
  17. When I was at the French 2 weeks ago, a few of the camps had vacant cottages. I would give a try for some of the resorts there at Alban and Wolsley Bay - Wolsley Lodge has a last minute reservation page.
  18. I'll be at the Dry Pine Bay area - hopefully the fish are turned on for the weekend! WR
  19. When I was in Ottawa in April picking up Jr. at university, I visited the Sail store there. Prices were pretty good at Sail considering I did a BPS hike in late March with no good deals. For example, I picked up several packs of blackbird floats for steelie fishing (Sail cost $3.99; BPS and CTC both over $5); I also picked up a battery gelpack and charger for my fishfinder $40 as compared to BPS at $50. I look forward to the added competition for BPS. BTW, the Ottawa Sail store had plenty of yaks and yak equipment for those yakfishers out there. WR
  20. I've been using a 2hp Yamaha on my canoe with a side bracket for over 30 years. The point about stability is an important one as the motor does cause instability as the canoe wants to tip. We've been compensating by adding water bottles (two 4litre bottles) on the opposite side of the canoe - it helps but you still have to be careful. Especially, if you tip your motor up for drifting along a shoreline (I recommend u keep it down). I had the motor up one time, and pointed up to a tree branch where my partner had flung his spinnerbait & whosh, I flipped and was in the drink. I've also used a squareback with the Yami, & found it much more stable but the tiller handle was too short & turning back to start the motor was a pain. So if you're using a motor on a squareback, limber up... I'd rather motor with a squareback. WR
  21. I was there today and overall I was disappointed. I wanted to get a few Koppers Live Target herrings and frogs. Their prices were no different that what I could get at home at a small local tackle store - so I'll get them locally. Sufix braid is cheaper this week at CTC. So I'll buy a few spools there. They should have their daily "specials" run for the full classic time not just that day - I would have liked the Trilene line that was the Thursday special. They still are the masters of selection - but their prices can be beat. It's still fun at the candy store even though I may not buy as much WR
  22. I spent some time and money at the BPS today. I didn't see too many deals - live target frogs were cheaper this week at CTC as was the Sufix braid. 2 of my must-have items (so I bought them at CTC). Still it's a fun way to spend an afternoon along with the lunch buffet at the Mandarin that's nearby - although I'm paying for it right now.
  23. Now, I'm worried. I bought my renewal in early January at the local tackle store but haven't got my card yet. Will they have me down as Pete or Peter?? WR
  24. There more than likely is a fence line running parallel to the tracks. That fence line will delineate the right-of-way. WR
