On pike opener my gameplan stays the same regardless of where i am, start in the shallowest weediest area i can find and work my out until the fish tell me whats up lol. As for hitting st. Clair ive never been but i was invited out to the kawarthas for pike opener and had to pass, i just dont feel right pike fishing in a lake i do all my muskie fishing in. I know its ok in the regs but it just doesnt sit well with me, to each their own though.

Nice gators, man i cant wait for opener here and my trip lol.

No Bluegill/ Panfish in an Ontario lake? Is this possible?
Gnote replied to wask's topic in General Discussion
I know a small lake east of the kawarthas that has tiny muskie big walters and little perch. I havent seen or heard of bass or other panfish anywhere in it. -
I broke down and bought one of those big soft tackle bags with all the plastic plano boxes in it. Keeps all the baits seperated but does take up some room in the boat. My buddies boat has a line of old rod hangers with a bit of soft foam in them and they are awesome for hanging a few select lures from while fishing.

Shakedown on the shakedown trip (called city hall)

I give you credit sir, you are far more patient and polite then i might have been. Ive gotten tired of the uninformed and the ignorant telling me where i can or cant fish over the years and my attitude towards such persons reflects that. -

Let me put it this way, there are 2 types of pike fishing numbers and size. If you want to go catch a few scrappers and dont mind losing a fish buy a cheap pack of leaders and have at er. If you want to catch pike of size i would buy or make a quality leader, i for one am not losing a 40"+ 20 lb+ gator because i refused to buy quality terminal gear. I put too much time money and effort into my fishing for that to happen.

I find pike come in from behind the lure but almost always hit it sideways with a burst of speed, a lot of times this power surge causes them to hit too far forward(or backwards) and miss the lure completely. Ive had fish miss a 10" lure and 12" of leader just to slash right through the braid above the leader, mind you this seems to happen more with smaller fish for some reason. It doesnt happen often so i stick to 9"-12" leaders but if they do miss and hit flouro of any weight chances are the leader is garbage now anyway.
-
I wouldnt use anything under 80lb, i rarely use anything under 100lb and usually just stick to 130lb. my 44" pb pike came on a 130lb flouro leader running a big double jointed on a stop and go pattern so the line couldnt have affected the action too bad. I must add however that i have recently been using 100lb single strand wire leaders and i love them, they never kink and are extremely low profile. They also outlast flouro because any size pike can slash deep cuts into thick flouro with either their teeth or gill rakes.

Congrats man! Feels good when it all comes together!

Im 30 and i have run a concrete pump for the same company since i was 19, i have been trying to save for a house for years but the winters kill me. Unfortunately not all trades make 40+ hours a week all year and sometimes im lucky to get one day a week in the winter which doesnt do much so i started snowploughing too. This year i went out twice ploughing all winter so i had to spend 5g of my savings to stay afloat, i work my ass off for what i have but sometimes the breaks arent there so i will keep at it until i get what i want. We have a high turnaround of young guys at my work who want to make big pay but are afraid of doing work, maybe 1 in 5 is worth the effort of trying to teach them something. Most of them come in wanting to run a crane and refuse to do any pump work whatsoever lol. I also wonder what the world will look like down the road but i try not to worry about other peoples problems when i got enough of my own. For the record i was raised by a single mother so i learned what real work ethic looked like early and therefore was never afraid of work, i tried to earn every dollar i could anywhere i could so i could have my own spending money for fishing equiptment, cut grass, rake leaves, shovel snow, help take docks in and out, or any other odd job basically from the age of 10 on. Gotta get out and get it if you want it.
