  1. looks like a minnow in someones hand
  2. I just got back from town and paying my bill for winterizing my boat, 150 hp optimax, the bill breakdown is as follows.filter 23.99, fuel stabilizer 12.99, labour 1hr @90.00. the total included shop supplies 4.50 and hst 17.09 for a grand total of 148.57 comments on the bill said they added fuel stabilizer, run it through the system, check gear oil and replace fuel filter, repair engine cover (didn';t know there was anything broken on it) so compared to the original poster, I got away easy and am not anywhere close to being ripped off.
  3. so this thread is 2 years old and many things have changed in the ipad and tablet formats, I;m looking for updated opinions on them, I'm thinking of getting the wife one for Christmas and don't know which way to go. she basically plays games and does emailing on her stand alone computer but I was thinking one of these would be more convenient for her to use. I would sure appreciate discussion on this topic.
  4. a few years ago, I was fishing with my wife at a spot in the river where it empties into our lake, down the river comes a beer can, so I told the wife that we should pick it up and I was cursing the litterbugs who care so little for the lake they throw their garbage in it. a few moments later, here comes another can, followed by another, and another, all in all I got 8 cans that floated by, the best part, they were cold and full of good old labatts blue. so I went home that day with a few fish for dinner and something to wash them down with
  5. I saw the plane fly over the golf course in Thunder Bay a few years ago, it sure was a great sight. can you imagine the noise produced by the hundreds of them going into battle, must have been awesome.
  6. it happens so fast if you are wearing waders and you go under or slip and they fill up with water and the current takes you. it happened to me when I was a kid fishing the Grand River down the street from my home, I was lucky,, my dad was with me and he grabbed me as I got dragged past him. this is surely a sad event.
  7. they aren't really expensive rods, maybe around 100 bucks, definitely not in the price range of the top of the line rods that are available but I like them and would hate to throw them away because the guides are loose and twisting around.
  8. ok we got southern Ontario covered , how about the northwest , any guys up this way know anyone who can re wrap my rods.
  9. over the past week I have discovered that 3 of my good graphite poles have developed loose guides. I am hoping the members here would have some idea on how I can fix them without sending them out to a person who repairs them professionally. I was thinking about using the glue that is put out to put the end guides on . any suggestion would help
  10. I heard a news item the other day on the radio where a group of 4 were charged by the officers on a fly in lake because they weren't wearing their pfds. I asked the officers in our detachment and they told me the life jackets had to be in the boat but it didn't matter if they were worn or not. the only exception to this is if they are the inflatable then they have to be worn at all times. now I see there was an ad on tv sponsored by the opp where they say the law has changed and the inflatable must be within an arms length of the person who is supposed to be wearing it. this all sounds kind of like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
  11. i got air rides when I bought my boat in 2001 and they lasted a year before they started falling apart. don't waste your money on them.
  12. 16foot is a great length for general purpose fishing, if you are using a 40 hp motor it should move along quite well. if it's a lund, it should be serviceable for years to come. the aluminum boats just go on and on. I have a 14 foot skiff and it was made in the 50s and still floats (with a few rivets sealed) . you won't be disappointed with a lund.
  13. hey whopper, did you find the name tags Connie put on the fish, which one was bruce, or harry?
  14. this was posted on facebook today
  15. taken from my deck this afternoon. with opener in 11 days, it doesn't look good
  16. when I got a couple 14 foot tinnies, I just sent a letter to Canada customs with the information on the boats and they sent me the numbers for the boat and they were under my name. mind you about 5 years later the province sent in a letter demanding tax on the boats . since I was given the boats I had to get the guy who gave them to me to sign a form saying no money changed hands and that he was going to junk them. they a few years later the province asked for the tax on them again and I had to go through the same process again.
  17. may 22 I'm heading down to Eagle Lake for our annual boys get together , if the ice is out!!!!!!!!
  18. the little independent store I went to in Winnipeg has gone the way of the wicked too, such a loss as he was meeting and sometimes beating cabela's and wholesale sports and he always had a sale going. just was a great place to stop in and shop. I sure miss it.
  19. Last August I bought a new truck, dodge ram 1500 with a crew cab. I purposely didn't get a cap as I wanted to be able to put my quad in the box. Now I need to get some ramps to get the quad in the box. a neighbour has told me that the folding ramps were useless and to stay away from them. I would like the opinions of those of you out there that have ramps as to what I should get.
  20. i always wear my inflateable vest and when I change locations I put my regular life jacket on over it. saves forgetting to put the inflateable on when I stop.
  21. Octogenarian fisher nets first musky taken from Lake Winnipeg By: Bruce Owen Posted: 7:06 AM | Comments: 8 | Last Modified: 9:26 AM | Updates Tweet 61 Post 131 Reddit 0 ShareThis 312 Print Email 15 Enlarge Image Aaron Wiebe, host of Uncut Angling, holds the musky John Selkirk caught in Lake Winnipeg. (YOUTUBE.COM) Related Items Articles Proposed legislation takes aim at poachers John Selkirk was pulling his net out of a hole drilled in the thick ice of Lake Winnipeg last January when a really big fish plopped out. Little did the 81-year-old commercial fisherman know, he would soon become a YouTube sensation. And the first person known to catch a musky on Lake Winnipeg. Muskies (muskellunges) are more commonly caught on Lake of the Woods, and were not thought to be able to get past the Pointe du Bois generating station on the Winnipeg River. "We were lifting and we said, 'What's that in the hole?' " he said. "I said it looks like a big jackfish. We pulled it more and a big damn fish came out. It was one of the biggest fish I've ever seen." Selkirk said he fished more for personal use this season and he did not set his nets very often. So his catch was pure luck. The fish was caught about three kilometres from Pine Dock off Little Bullhead Point. "This stupid fish came along and landed in it," he said. Selkirk brought the monster fish back to his Pine Dock home -- it measures almost 1.2 metres long -- and put it in his freezer, where it remains. Word spread quickly when a family member took a photo of it and sent it to Uncut Angling, a TV show dedicated to sportfishing. A crew recently visited Selkirk's home and posted a video of Selkirk and his musky on YouTube. Selkirk said he has no plans to mount the fish or eat it. "I can eat pickerel. It's better." Wikipedia describes the musky as the largest member of the pike family; it looks like a bulked-up northern pike with different markings and bigger teeth. The common name comes from the Ojibwa word maashkinoozhe, meaning "ugly pike." In Canada, the musky's natural range is limited to Ontario and Quebec. It's found in the St. Lawrence River and southern Quebec (north and south of the St. Lawrence River). In Ontario, it's found in the Great Lakes as well as southern and northwestern Ontario. An April 2011 report on the distribution and management of musky by the Ontario government said although muskellunge are sometimes captured in the Manitoba waters of the Winnipeg River -- downstream migrants from Lake of the Woods -- there are no established musky populations in Manitoba. Until now, Selkirk said. {C} Republished from the Winnipeg Free Press print edition April 17, 2014 A7

  23. didn't read the list but it should have the everready bunnie, he just keeps going and then the Aflac duck because he has had a lot of injuries and keeps coming back, (must have good insurance plan)
  24. Last summer the mnr caught a guy at the neighbours tourist camp and I have been trying to find out the results of his case. Finally I went to the mnr office in town and asked what the outcome was. the secretary asked the c.o. and emailed me the result. the tourist (who had been coming here for years) had 28 walleye. that was 20 over his and his wife's limit. the fine was 2500 dollars and 1 year suspension on fishing in Ontario. but his real cost was, he sold his boat (that he just bought 2 weeks prior to coming) to the marina in town. and they packed up and left Canada vowing never to return. His loss is our gain
  25. he has some good tips on his show but I agree, the constant barrage of his pitching the products is enough to turn you off, someone should tell him to cool it a bit
