I heard a lot of the ice blew out yesterday.

I called the cops once to put down a deer that was hit by a car. I told them I would put it out of its misery if they would allow me to...I had a sledge hammer in the truck. They said no, wait for an officer. I waited for about 40 mins while this poor deer hacked and gagged, spit blood, and kicked non stop trying to get up with two broken hind legs. When the cop fimally arrived, he was too afraid to shoot it, so I ended up using my sledge. I was livid with this cop. Another time, a guy at work hit a deer on his way in, just around the corner. He called the cops, I went to track the wounded deer. There was snow on the ground, so tracking was easy....found it about 100yds off the road, still trying to run with no rear legs working. The cop shows up, so I ask him if he will put it down, he agrees that's the best thing to do, and opens fire....5 shots later he still hasn't touched the deer. Pathetic. I'll bet this guy gets off scott free. The only reason he has been charged is to settle down the bleeding hearts that are making a fuss over nothing! Don't these people have anything else to do?? I'll also bet we don't hear a thing in the media about what happens. This province is really starting to drive me nuts!! Nothing but a bunch of bleeding heart sissies. The bear was going to be dead either way, this is all nothing but Bull to make the tree huggers happy! GRRRR.....drives me nuts! S.

For us on the east coast is was cod or nothing. We always had herring, mackeral and capelin salted, smoked or canned as well. Moose and birds were the meat staples. Grow your potatoes and other root vegtables, and keep them in the root cellar for the winter. We had a couple sheep, and usually one cow that we butchered in the late fall, and hung frozen in the storage shed all winter. Its not an easy lifestyle, that's for sure, but its good for you, and the people who know how are the ones you'll see surviving is stuff ever hits the fan. S.

Might be going tuesday as well. Shouldn't be a problem, but these temps aren't looking good. I'll be the guy blasting ducks while you fish. Sorry about the noise lol....

We ran dogsleds to haul lumber to our sawmill in the winters, and fished in the summer from a 32ft trap skiff with a 6hp acadia diesel engine. 8 guys, up to 8000lbs of fish, 3 times a day, in a boat with 6hp.....and we were styling...most crews had to row!! Sometimes I feel like a dinosaur, but its really the way humans are supposed to live. Next to no impact on the environment, all natural foods, no health issues....the way life is supposed to be! Nobody wants to do the work involved to live like that anymore. I fear for the lives my kids and grandkids are facing.....the whole planet is going to pot. S.

I'll add some photos to this tomorrow. We still can a lot of goods, do maple syrup, grow our gardens, hunt, fish, and make use of everything possible, but times have changed so much, it is cheaper to go with the new ways with some things. Could you imagine raising 14 kids in a 4 bedroom home with no hydro or running water? I'm not even 40 and I still remember fetching buckets of water from the brook beside the house in the middle of winter, and heating them on the woodstove to have A bath when I was a kid. People nowadays have no idea about this kind of lifestyle, and most think I'm nuts to want to go back to it. They don't know what they're missing. S.

I was born and raised like this. My dad came from a family of 14 kids. No hydro, no running water. They didn't see a real care until the late 60's....no roads!! My nan would bake bread EVERY day. 14 loaves.all while cooking, cleaning, and making clothes. I think about this all the time, and try to pass as much of it onto my kids as they can bear with. 4 years ago my old man moved back to the home he was born in....along with his 13 siblings. This crew are real survivors. This day and age, its harder to go back to that lifestyle, no matter how bad I'd love to. Great topic! I could go on, and on about this stuff! S.

Fairly new boat as far as I understand. I can't see it being water logged. I don't think I'd even go on the water in a tracker boat now. I totally understand not posting the story right away, those guys must be traumatized. Thank god everyone is OK....that's all that's important here. S.

What side of the lake are you on? I'm assuming east side, since a west wind would pile up the slush like you describe?? S.

If it was me who was rescued, I would share my story everywhere possible. It could very well save someone elses life! There's no shame in that....... S.

Please explain the difference between dead by rock, and dead by....whatever?? Dead is dead. Suffering is suffering. Society is turning into a bunch of bleeding hearts. Think about where we came from people....to live...things die. Get over it, move on. S.

I'm very interested in hearing the whole story as well. Bottom line is that everyone made it to shore alive....thank god.....stuff happens quick and always when you least expect it. Sharing bad experiences like these could very well save someone elses life somewhere down the road. S.

Peoples reaction to death never cease to amaze me. The bottom line here is that bear was going to die. The guy had two choices. Watch it suffer a long, slow, painful death....or put it out of its misery. Comparing it to a person is just messed up. You ever heard the sound a dying bear makes?? It aint pretty!! S.

If its hilly, forget about it. I've had guys in eyesight on stand, and couldn't reach them. I think those ones were motorolas.....tried the cobra's too....same junk. S.

I find the "splitting axe's" will drive the thin end into the wood easy, but a lot of time, they will bounce back out. Especially if its good hardwood. The maul works best IMO, and I split A LOT of wood! I do it at home, and at work. About 6 bush cords at work, and 3-4 at home. I use the splitter at home though.....work is too cheap! LOL What kind of wood were you splitting Steve? Makes a big difference too. Oak, Ash, and maple are a dream. Anything that's twisted and knotty is much, much harder. S. S.
