  1. I am sure this is true, but the report noted that there are large infestations of gobies on the SLR muskie spawning grounds - perhaps this is not true of other bodies of water? Wondering, for example, of Lake St Clair...........

  2. im not sure im clear what your question is, but my assumption that due to the nature of a musky to be large and eat larger meals less often, my assumption is that muskys do not benefit from eating gobies in the same manner as a bass or walleye. Not that either of those species dont eat the occasional large meal, but I dont think its the musky's nature to spend its day cruising foraging small bits of food like a goby, They are more so an ambush predator waiting for for a larger fish thats made a wrong turn. While smallmouth bass on the other hand, this is basically all they do, swim and forage for food.

  3. The craziness is that he clearly did it once and then told his buddy "Hey make a video of me, I wanna do that again".

  7. I think you hit the nail on the head here. Muskies aren't likely to eat gobies in any significant number, and there are millions of them in the SLR, including large populations (according to the article) on traditional muskie spawning areas. Perch and smallmouth are getting BIG slurping up unlimited goby buffets, but they do not appear to be putting a dent in goby numbers yet. Nevertheless, I am heartened to see that John Casselman figures there will be a way forward. Doug

  8. Once again I'm totally humbled and thrilled to be asked to asked to be the Honorary Chairperson of the 2021 Orillia Perch Derby which happens to be the 40th Anniversary of this awesome grass roots event! I have had lots of ties to the city of Orillia and have been participating in this event for probably over 35 years. It is a great event designed to get everyone out fishing, kids , families and drew many visitors from far & wide to the "Sunshine City"! Due to COVID times there are plenty of changes, the most recent one is the change of dates to May 8 - 29, 2021 to comply with province of Ontario's "Stay at Home" order! For the first time it has also become a virtual event: Boundaries for the event now include all the waters and shorelines of Lake Simcoe & Couchiching plus any other bodies of water located within Simcoe County! Once registered, you will receive an link to download the "Orillia Perch Festival" app onto your phone! You can entered 1 fish each for the duration of the event! Size doesn't matter! There will be a guaranteed "tagged" fish caught each day of the event along with many other draw prizes! Each day that you enter a perch earns you a chance in the draw for the "tagged" perch of the day as well as the Grand Prize boat at the end of the contest! You don't need data on your phone in order to enter a fish but you must connect with Wi-Fi within the boundaries of the festival to download your entry as it is geofenced! Fun inexpensive time for all, only $5 for a child and $25 for an adult! I hope that everyone takes advantage of these new changes and enters this awesome fishing event, this may be your year! Best of luck to all!

  11. I too remember the good old smelt days off the pier at Pt Stanley when I was a kid. Some nights you couldn't lift the net cause there were so many smelt in there. Smelt are still around but not like they were in the 60's and 70's. I have been dipping my dad's vintage 6' x 6' smelt net (bought in the 60's at CTC) off the pier at Bruce. I have been getting enough for a few feeds of smelt every spring. A lot more work but it is nice to get out. WR
