Motor trouble shoot

As much fun as it is finding a marine mechanic in muskoka on the long weekend, I'd thought I'd try here first. It seems like to me that my engine isn't getting gas? Every time I prime the ball it seems empty or a little soft? Starting the engine is the main problem. To get it to start I need the choke wide open and let it run high rpms for a few mins and hope it doesn't die putting it in gear. Once it's running it runs fine. Any on the spot trouble shoots I can do?

Might be going out on a limb here but do you have another gas line and/or tank to try? (borrow maybe?) If the problem duplicates with another tank & line you'll know then it's in the fuel delivery for the motor - either diaphragm or pump. The bulb going soft might indicate the pick up in the tank is fouled or the bulb itself may be the culprit, even the tank line could have some crap in it OR it could even be a cracked line letting air in interupting the fuel flow. Good place to start if you can find another set.
