sneak_e_pete Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 Hi all, I have a trip planned to the South Shore of Nipissing with my little boy Jan. 1-4. Just wondering if anyone can update me on the conditions. I have been unable to find info. Thanks in advance.
Rod Caster Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 water water everywhere. 14 day forecast has a low of around -11. Not looking good, but don't count it out.
cheaptackle Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 Hey Chad - those shack repairs involve pontoons at all?
Nipfisher Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 sneak-e-pete check out the Torbay cottages website and view their beach cam. You will see the last 24 hours. http://www.torbay.net/ No ice yet. This past Sunday the marina at the waterfront was iced over with a skim, but that is gone now I believe. This blurb was taken from the daily blog posted on http://www.greeningbay.com/index.phtml "Yesterday we had some very light flurries and more overnight but only went down to -4 by the water. North Bay is claiming -8. It's too windy to form ice but yesterday morning part of Greening Bay had some. It's too dark just yet to see but I'm going out on a limb and saying there's a small build up of ice shards along our shoreline this morning. " If you keep checking these 2 sites you will be kept abreast of the conditions. Her daily fishing reports are excellent once the season starts. My guess is it will get realy cold (minus 20s) between the 25th and the 1st. My prediction is I will be fishing on Callander Bay on the 1st. Might not have my shack out but I wuill find some safe ice.
Muskieman Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 there was a boat near Jocko Point out today in Snow-Squalls... Ice free
Bernie Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Heard there was 4 inches of ice on Fish Bay today. Only around the edges in Hunters Bay. Need a calm cold night and the main lake will freeze over.
sneak_e_pete Posted December 9, 2011 Author Report Posted December 9, 2011 Thanks for info. As always, much appreciated!
sneak_e_pete Posted December 9, 2011 Author Report Posted December 9, 2011 Sorry, one more question. I admit I have no idea how ice forms, or how cold it needs to be. At this point, is there even a chance that the ice will be safe enough to be in an operator's hut on January 1, or should I just re-book?
Rod Caster Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 Small chance the ice will be ready by jan 1, to be honest. We need at least a week of very cold (-20) temps to get a good sheet. Plus if it keeps snowing, the ice quality will be lower. I'd rebook for the following week or two. After that, if you want to ice fish on nip, give us North Bay members a PM.

I will be fishing on Callander Bay on the 1st. The operator's are cautious about puting their commercial huts out until there is 8-10" of ice. Call the operator you are booked with and ask how late they will allow you to cancel and re-book. They may be all full for the 1st couple weeks.
Bernie Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 I have been boating on the 7th of December and ice fishing at New Years. Once it freezes over it shouldn't take long to tighten up. We do need a good week of cold though. Lots of time yet.
mike rousseau Posted December 10, 2011 Report Posted December 10, 2011 On the st.lawrence... You can take your pick of boat or ice... Alot of the river stays open most of the year... Usually the switch from boat to ice is seamless... 1 week tops...

Like u said keeping in touch with the operator is the best thing to do. Edited December 10, 2011 by Rod Caster
Rod Caster Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/caon0484 Jan 1st is NOT looking good
Big Cliff Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 last couple of years we were ice fishing here on Sturgeon lake on New Years day. The long range forecast is calling for above normal temperatures for the next two weeks, + 10 for tomorrow and nights not getting nearly as cold as normal. I very much doubt we'll be ice fishing out here by the first. There is a bit of ice shards in the bay infront of our place but it isn't solid enough to walk on. Good luck with your Nip Trip!
Nipfisher Posted December 13, 2011 Report Posted December 13, 2011 DEFINATELY won't be huts out for the 1st. I still plan on fishing Callander Bay but will be on foot. +7 or +8 (depends on what website you look at) forecasted for Thurs. North Bay Forecast
BassAsin Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 Nip is still open, was down at fish bay today and it was a light drizzle with ice maybe 50yds out only a couple inches. small lakes were froze enough for me to get out on monday on 4 inches of solid black, but todays plus 3 and drizzly conditions may have done them in too.
ctdd2006 Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 I don't think we'll be out for trout opener here in Elliot Lake unless it is a smell speck lake. We're wide open and have yet to see an inch of snow.
Bassaholic Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 In the same boat as Pete, looking to spend a weekend on Nip with some buddies but dont really know when to book with all this warm weather we're having. Whats the latest you local guys have seen the operators get their huts out for the season? We're thinking about going Jan.13th...
Nipfisher Posted December 14, 2011 Report Posted December 14, 2011 One year, about 15 years ago, we couldn't fish until Feb. 4th! Not sure if or when the bungalows got out then (or if there were even bungalows then).
bassnass Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 Word from Rob Hyatt is that his huts will NOT be out for the 1st. (My trip is bumped a week!)
Big Cliff Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 Well, there isn't a spec of ice here on Sturgeon Lake today, that rain and + 10 yesterday did in what little there was. Long range forecast still calling for above normal temps for the next two weeks. Looks like this is going to be a short season for ice fishing!
Nipfisher Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 Today -9°C* -19 Sat -11°C -19°C Sun -1°C -13°C Mon 0°C -2°C Tue -7°C -17°C
Rod Caster Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 two nights like this, with no snow and I'll be fishing on some small lakes.
asdve23rveavwa Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 two nights like this, with no snow and I'll be fishing on some small lakes. Nice! As long as Callander is froze over on January 15th...I'm a happy camper!
