For those who own the new Strikemasters with Solo engines, and have tried the old Tecumseh engines, what is the main difference between the two? Which one do you prefer and why??

Thanks!

I called Stikemaster because my three blade auger is a peace of :asshat: . The Techumseth motor is great though.

I asked the service guy why they switched motors. He told me that Techumseth stopped running production on that motor. They where basically shut down by the EPA. A few years ago, the EPA jacked up the requirements for that motor. So Techumseth spent somewhere in the range of 6 million to redesign the motor. Last year, again, the EPA jacked up the requiremnts even more. Techumseth couldn't afford to do another design revision on a motor that was basically only sold to Stikemaster to be used on ice augers..

That's was the service guy told me anyways. He said they had been planning on switching to Solo for a while, but wheren't in any rush cuz the Tech, motors worked fine. Once Tech stopped production on the motor, they already had Solo lined up and made the switch.

I don't know much about the Solo motors, but I believe they have a primer blub, which is handy. The Tech. doesn't. Obviously, they are more environmentally freindly too. According to the service guy, they start better in the really cold weather.

On that note, does anyone have a auger they want to sell. Just the auger, not the power head.. :whistling:

I have owned both of them. Below you will find video of both of them working and they are both from a cold start.

I prefer the newer model with the Solo engine. Very dependable, easy to use, no fiddling with the choke, has primer bulb. I don't recall for certain but I think the Solo was a lighter oil mixture as well which meant it burnt cleaner. Both motors were powerful. The first one I had was with the Tech motor, about 3 yrs old, still ran great to the day I sold it. The newer Solo motor I used for just one season before I sold it, reason for selling was the upgrade to the Normark with the Huskquivarna engine instead plus a solid metal gear case (centrifugal).

Mines the 2hp, and it doesn't have a primer. What Hp is yours?
