jamisteel Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 which grease and oil is best for general purpose low profile baitcasting fishing reels? which one do you apply to the level wind worm, oil or grease? Lastly what's your favourite oil and grease for reel maintenance?
Dabluz Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 For the bearings, I use Rem-Oil or Hot Sauce. Just one tiny drop. I want the main bearings to be like they were dry. For grease, I have a can of instrument grease that I got over 30 years ago when I was an instrument tech in the Air Force. Wow....this stuff does not even think about getting thicker....even at -30 F. Then there is just ordinary sewing machine oil for the places where the bearings are not subjected to high speeds. However, I will be buying an oil called "Rocket Fuel". It's a tad thicker than Hot Sauce. I have heard that Hot Sauce is sometimes too thin. I clean and lubricate my spool bearings a couple of times during the season.
goteeboy Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 i use hotsauce almost exclusively. i've tried reel butter, but it just doesn't seem to spread as well. hotsauce is the way to go.
perchslayer666 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Well, for my spinning reels use quantum hot sauce and for my rod I use K-Y C'mon that was funny?
bigbuck Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Another vote for Hot Sauce!!! As for grease, Hot Sauce Grease. I like it HOT! On my level wind worms, I put a bit of grease and work it around, on all the bearings, a dot of oil. It is much slicker than light machine oil and I find my reels perform much better.
scugpg Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) Interesting thread. Are there any videos on how to properly clean and lube a baitcast or spinning reel? Edited October 28, 2009 by scugog
bigbuck Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 As for baitcasters, lube what you can easily get to, don't try to take them apart, there are waaayy too many little screws, springs and gizmos. Take it in every few years for a full cleaning and lube job and pay the $20-30 to do it.
goteeboy Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 check out this link and check their forum subcategory for tuning and maintenance. http://www.tackletour.com/articlereelmaint...ocuradopg2.html
Dabluz Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Interesting thread. Are there any videos on how to properly clean and lube a baitcast or spinning reel? Here is a link and you will find a half dozen direct links to how to maintain a baitcaster. http://pages.videotron.com/fishing/page6.html
aplumma Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 A secret (no longer) is when the surfcasting competitions people would degrease/clean their reels and then lube up the bearings with lighter fluid to give them just the right oil but not the drag of a heavy lube. The downside is it has no rust or corrosion prevention so after the contest they would oil the reels till the next time and then degrease and lighter fluid them again.... Art
casting Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Hot sauce grease to the level wind worm and gears, hot sauce oil to most of the bearings.
NANUK Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Electical contact cleaner for removing old grease, oil, dirt & grime, Superlube oil spray or Superlube synthetic grease for lubrication of all reel parts.
mojobass Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Hot sauce oil and grease. My Shimano spinning reel felt a little crusty, after cleaning it out it was practically brand new!
