It's good that you're finally entering the world of real fishing, haha, just kidding. I think if you want to get decent gear, it's worth while to consider buying used stuff. I do it all the time via fishing forums and ebay. You will be able to get a set up that you'll really enjoy for your price range. In terms of the reel you'll need to decide on round or low profile, though most seem to be going the way of low profile these days, as the manufacturers have really been beefing up the gears and for more comfort. If you can get an older shimano chronarch 101D (these were the gold standard a decade ago) for a $100 I don't think you'd regret it. I had one a while back and they casted just as far if not farther and smoother than modern reels. Or a Daiwa fuego magnesium. I have one, bought it on ebay, beefed in up w/ orange seal boca bearings, and it's just silky smooth. And then buy a St. Croix Premier 6'6" or 7' MH also used...and you're set. So I took a look at the tires a bit closer. There are five rows of tread on each tire and it's the outer two treads that are badly worn and cupped. What does that mean? The passenger side a bit more than the other. So I did take off the spare and replaced the one that was more worn and I'll replace the other one when my new tires arrive. When i took off the worn tire i checked for play in the hub and there was none. Tires are Maxxis 175/80/13 rated for 35psi cold at 1100lbs per tire. As well the tires are original and the boat/trailer is around 9-10 yrs old. The previous owner hardly trailered as i remember the tires being new when i bought the package 4 years ago. If they were over-weighted, they would have the tendency to ride on the inside treads, at least that's what i think, but these are wearing on the outside treads so what does that mean? One other question that came to mind was, are my leaf springs too strong or too weak? could that be a factor? So if they are too weak, then the weight of the boat has essentially maxed out the springs, there's no more give, so they will bounce. does my logic make sense? Again, i have a single axle trailer which came w/ the boat. the boat is a 16.5ft lowe w/ a 50hp 2 stroke. So i don't think it's over weighted. Also, the trailer is nearly level when it's connected on the ball/hitch. the mystery continues

Thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated. New tires have been ordered. From my research online it seems that the main culprit is suspension. Trailers have the tendency to be more bouncy and of course in smaller single axle trailers the suspension is no where nearly as sophisticated as that of a car. I remember having this problem on an old Olds Delta 88 I drove. Terrible suspension in the front and as a result, cupped tires. I'm almost certain that my cause is not from tire pressure as the wear across the tread is pretty even. Anyway. New tires on the way.

As the topic says, my trailer tires are cupped pretty badly, but i think i'll still use them for one final season. Anyone see any safety issue in this? There is still some tread left, just the cupping. So, anyone know why this is happening and how I can ensure it doesn't happen w/ my next pair? Hauling a 16.5 ft Lowe aluminum. Boat is tied down tight to trailer. And air pressure is correct. Thanks.

i was under a tight budget so I bought a Fladen. Not really well known in Canada, but supposedly very popular in Europe. I searched a bunch of reviews and they seemed positive. They are relatively cheap too. Only 85pounds or 134 $Can. Which is really really cheap. From what I know, most, if not all of the suits ice fishermen wear are FLOATATION Suits, not Survior suits. Big difference. If I'm not mistaken, the survivor suit is meant to slow down hypothermia in water and is more like a neoprene suit. But the floatation suit is meant to keep you from going under. In either case, you gotta get out of the ice. So IMHO, all a floatation suit needs to do is keep you floating so you can use your picks to pull yourself out as quickly as possible. After that, i guess it's about fit and comfort. So for me, i don't need to spend 400 on a mustang. I bought a little buddy heater (Mr. Heater) but I found it a pain in the butt. It's top heavy and thus tippy and seems to have a tough time lighting up when it's really cold. And I found an even more compact one where the butane fuel canister stick out a bit. Pros 1. cheap 2. sufficient heat 3. butane fuel is around $5-6 for a 4-pack at any Asian grocery like Galleria in the GTA or H-mart in Richmond Hill. I heard there are poorly made fuel canisters (from China?) so I try to get mine at Korean groceries. Quality is supposedly higher. As an FYI, last time I checked crappy tire, they had the butane but it was really overpriced. 4. Can also cook on it which i do all the time, boil water for tea/coffee, etc. 5. very light and compact. comes with case 6. Self starting, twist of a dial. 7. can use as camp stove in summer 8. fuel canisters are also very compact and store easily (shaped like a can of hairspray but more girth) Cons 1. Open flame in tent (but we keep ours right in the middle so it's pretty safe) 2. Butane canisters lose their pressure when it gets really cold so the flame size shrinks (my solution is that I keep a couple canisters close to my chest, under my jacket and rotate them when the flame shrinks. 3. I suppose if wind leaks into your tent the flame can go out 4. not 'green' as you will need to dispose of your empty canisters.

My story is a from a few years back on Balsam, near the shore across from the PP, with my little 14ft tinny 9.9hp, me and two of my small kids. A stupid waterski boat w/ skier in tow, basically used my boat as a pylon. He barreled by me on the inside and then circled around to the outside and headed back in the same direction from which he came. His wake FROM ALL THREE SIDES hit my boat at the same time. We were very close to capsizing. Don't we all slow down when approaching an anchored boat or a canoer for that matter and steer way clear of them? Man, was I upset, especially as I had the little ones with me. I know I had no chance chasing him down in my 9.9. Morons a plenty on our lakes.

well, related to the first question, i know that with FFs, you can adjust depth to compensate for a hull that sits deep in the water or a TM that goes a foot or two below the surface.

well i tried the electric tape solution and it works like a charm. Not sure how long it will last, but in any case it works. No more rooster tail.

I mounted it just like you did and it worked out really well. Now I'm assuming that the direction the transducer is mounted doesn't really matter. Thanks again for the advice.

Hey guys and gals I got a new fishfinder/gps and so i mounted the old one at the bow of the boat. My question: is there a way to mount a transom mount transducer onto the trolling motor or must I get a trolling motor transducer. And if i can mount it onto the trolling motor should i foresee any issues with the operation of it? I wouldn't think so. Should I/Can I mount it w/ epoxy? Second question: The new fishfinder is a humminbird. i mounted the new transducer but it is kicking up a rooster tail at high speed and then the spray from that is getting into the boat even. So there's a 1x1/5 inch gap between the bracket and the transducer. I think this is where the spray is coming from. Anyway to prevent this? Should i fill the gap with epoxy? Thanks for the comments in advance.

What about Balsam Provincial Park. They don't have rentals in the park, but Coboconk has rentals I believe. What about Sibbald Point on Simcoe, do they have boat launches? And I can't remember exactly, but I think Bon Echo PP has rentals. Good luck

Yes, there are musky in Joseph as well as medium to large pike. I had a beast follow this past Monday. My guess it was a musky and not a pike as the back was more brown than black. Last year, landed a very long, but very skinny muskie. My partner landed a 9 lb pike and lost one close to 12 or more lbs this Monday. If you need more info PM me.
