Anders, have you seen if anyone has been down the OW road in the park? Im slowly getting a stupid/good idea.
-
Not a bad day on quinte at all mike...sam is a great guy for sure, he steered me in the right direction a few times out there. Where are you heading up north? Let me know if you're headed through this part of the country. cheers

Ya I saw you pull on the lake then. Ya we'll get together this winter for sure. Didnt matter what type of sled you had after those rains we had the trees were all down across the trail, made for slow going in deep snow. 50yds without stopping was a good run. Send me a msg later this week if youre heading out this weekend.

did you guys make it to kaufmann? I seen a sled come in and pull a uturn. We ran into the opp and the co as well. Not to mention we broke 15km of trail from trout lake to reserve. Im so tired right now I cant sit up or drink beers. Glad you guys had a good day. We got lucky 4 sleds in 4 out....4.5hrs in 30mins out.

I think your best bet is to look into a warmer sleeping bag and clothes. As previously pointed out tent stoves are good for quick warmups and especially to facilitate drying gear. Plus its May fishing 98% of the fun is catching trout in snowstorms. After which rye kept in a creek all day, taken in an appropriate dose will induce sleep in any temperatures.

Natural Selection Gives Way to Human Selection
troutologist replied to wallacio's topic in General Discussion
Great article! This kind of research interests me, I wish I was working on this type of thing. Though I agree with the article, I was curious about a few things: 1. Since the majority of breeding is done by the "herd bull" is it safe to assume that the "lesser" males are his offspring, and thus containing the "trophy" genetics. This would imply that lesser bulls are simply immature and have the potential to grow into trophies. 2. With an observed trend towards mroe rapid change through human-induced pressures from various harvest techniques, how is it that each year new big game records are taken. I wonder if this can be attributed to mutations due to other human activities, pollution, hormones etc. Just some ramblings of mine...any thoughts? -
i think i mutter a yup or yea on the hookset but am partial to: "Another one for Millosh" to taunt those fishing with me after the fish is in the boat/on the ice.

Pretty good day on the water Ben. Question though, what are you running on the "high" bait on this rig a minnow or a plastic. Also do you go a bit heavier on the bottom jig head to hold the rig more or less stationary? keep the good reports coming

Back Lakes to Big Bays: 5 Days of Ice Fishing
troutologist replied to Ramble's topic in General Discussion
Good report for sure. Its trips like that on which you learn and earn your fish. it does however make successive trips go much smoother. I unfortunately never learn and would rather go the wrong/most difficult way fast than the easy way methodically. sweet fontinalis -
Truck goes through the ice!!!!!!!!!

Classic!! I'll never understand taking a vehicle on ice myself, but if you do it might as well be extra heavy. -
Heck of a day guys! I miss steelhead already we've been in the freezer here nearly a month...cait wait til the 1st. Keep up the good work and keep posting open water pics.

Classic!! Ive seen dogs climb up chainlink fence to get out of a run before
-
Unfortunately its a part of growing up. Taking risks and learning from mistakes. Glad no one was hurt. But its a heck of a story. I guess I appreciated it because it sounds exactly like me and a few buddies, expect minus about 250hp.

Ive caught a few perch trolling worms for walleye there. We didnt fish lower, I think there was a family that was heading down there just as left. I was surprised there was that much ice there.
-
Hey that was you out there?? Me and a buddy only were out for an hour just checking the ice out. What depth were you getting them in? We only got a small perch.
-
I got a kick out of that post. the lead in had me thinking it was a tough season....then only posting the 10+ fish. Good work! You guys have that fall pattern pretty dialed in.
-
theres ice on the small lakes...you wont be disappointed if you get up for the 5am fish. splake are on fire right now. As for me Ive got my eye on a rainbow lake this weekend. Luck, and stay dry.
-
Thanks Mike, I'll give that a go. Can't wait to get after those suspended lakers now! cheers
-
Can you expand on your setup. Ive got this same unit and was wondering how to rig it for icefishing. I was thinking you could just toss a bit of weight on the transducer mount to hold it down?????
-
Ditto. Maybe I'll run into you up there this winter.

Can you use a regular reel on an ice fishing rod?
troutologist replied to sneak_e_pete's topic in General Discussion
I appreciate the mention of the versatile gad....I showshoe into lakes with 2 spools of lines and a film container of hooks and sinkers I have been experimenting with the fireline ice to jig for lakers with good results. Same for walleyes. I wouldn't use anything but a regular reel for icefishing, small reels handle poorly with mitts on -
Another great day. Good work fellas. Those browns are wild looking in spawning regalia!
-
Gavin, Im always interested in a good icefishing trip. Ive been limited to snowshoes for the past few years, can't wait to hit up some of the lakes I used to get into. If the tundra gets stuck I can just pick it up and carry it though...hope the lakes freeze soon Keep in touch Jay
