  1. Thank you for the reply Kickingfrog. This is what they are supposed to look like when done.
  2. Some of you may have seen the post I made back in the summer of the cedar boat I am fixing up this winter. I mentioned at that time I was looking for the same year engine as the boat. There were a few old motors that have been collecting dust for as long as I can remember upstairs at the boat shop. Saturday afternoon I went and literally dusted them off and found this Johnson QD-10. Someone gave it an awful paint job at some point in time. Before spending a lot of time restoring this one I decided to see if it would run first. Took the hood off and noticed that the coating on the ignition coils had somehow run off over the years and left goo all over it. There were no spark plugs in the cylinder head and that concerned me as it may have been full of bugs and dirt inside. There was this much dust under the hood, you should have seen the outside. I knew the first thing I needed was spark, so I started there. Now this little engine was made in Peterborough in 1949 so you can imagine there are not too many parts available for these. These are the old coils. Improvising can be a necessity so that's what I did. The coils were bad, but I had heard that taking the coil off of a much newer model and combining it with the old coil metal laminate it could be made to work. It did . Cleaned up the old breaker points, replaced a condenser and spark was fixed. Now the fuel system is a concern because carburator parts dry out and crack, and are often specialized pieces. I took the chance and did not disassemble it at this time. Cleaned out the old glass filter and blew out the fuel lines. Drained out the old gear lube (it was still clear) and refilled it. Well sometime this morning (lost track of time, was having fun ) I dropped it into the test tank, hit the primer a few times and gave it a pull. One pull, awesome...... It didn't pump water too well but it did enough to run it for a while. Went looking in the parts room for a water pump and found one. It is the same as a mid 60's 10 HP. Put it in and it pumps well now. I decided to restore this one, it may take a while to make it look good again. Original paint colours and decals are available on a website I found. Peeled some paint off today, looks a little better now. Next is to tear it apart and go over it more thorough, and repaint as i go.
  3. Ha....I was thinking that.
  4. Yep ..asinine is the word. It is going to come to the point no one will do anything but be couch potatoes.
  5. Hope you have a speedy recovery Chris. Finally going to get you up here for a weekend of fishing with us!
  6. Business phones are still fair game according to the rules. I HATE THEM!!!!! Just get under a car fixing something, it rings, and it's one of them. ARRRRGGGGG GO AWAY!! I would NEVER buy anything from them, just for that reason. Can you tell it PISSES me off?
  7. Could be? WTH? They have diagrams. I just looked at them. Simple circuit. All they have to do is TEST IT!!!! Idiots!
  8. When I finished high school I went to work for Sears. 4 years in a warehouse getting in shape and making good bucks (for around here at the time anyway). Then got on driving transport for them for the next 6 years, it was a great job, benefits, decent pay and a future pension plan. But some dudes were disgruntled about some trivial stuff and started talking union. That was January 1985. We got the news in February, moving operations to Barrie guys, where do you want to go?, we are shutting North Bay down. It was pretty tough to take at the time but it all turned out a whole lot better for me anyway.
  9. Many memories and Bull were spread around these machines today, lots of good stories of fun, and breakdowns. The fella's that brought these down are fanatics about these machines. Most have several of them either completed or on the mend. They bring down something different each time they arrive. John there were a couple of Rupps the last time around. I'll snap a couple shots if they bring them again.
  10. We had a local vintage snowmobile club set up at our shop today and I took a few pictures I thought some here might like to see. These guys have spent a lot of time fixing, painting and searching for pieces. Some are almost flawless. I wanted the Evinrude, had one as a kid and spent countless hours of fun on it. I'm sure there are guys out there with stories of their favorites. Lets hear them. Hope you enjoy these. I sure did.
  11. Shimano has replaced 2 rods for me. No questions. My V-rod was replaced by a one up model as the V was no longer being made. I liked the V-rod better than the replacement though.
  12. Change the impeller for sure and while you are at it the lower end gear lube. Check carefully under the hood for mice and the remnants of them. Chewed wires can be a problem too. Look carefully in the carbs and clear out any accumulated dirt. Make sure the carb linkages and controls work freely. I would probably undo the fuel line at the carb inlets and prime the bulb to push out the crud from the fuel lines too. Have a look at the rubber on the prop to make sure it isn't cracked, don't want it spinning out on your first trip. It may not hurt to pull the spark plugs and give the cylinders a quick spray of a light penetrating oil before you turn it over, it may save cracking a piston ring. A quick squirt in the carbs too. Run the fuel oil ratio a little lower on the first tank, maybe 30 to 1 or so.
  13. Thanks Brian. My uncle Joe (second from the left at the back) has been hunting at our camp since 1943 for 2 weeks each year. Thats 66 years to save you the calculation. That adds up to well over two years spent hunting there over his lifetime. He still is in great shape and drives his ATV like a champ. I think he's 84 now. My dad (kneeling on the right) isn't too far behind him in years spent there and can shoot as well as anyone at 77.
  14. Guess we will have to enter these two. And the other three hanging in the meathouse.
  15. Way to go fellas! Hey Joe, good to see yer learning! You catching fish like that the next trip you can school me. (Almost time to plan that again too)
  16. Happy birthday OFC! Great place to hang your fishing hat.
  17. Great post Luc. I hail from Powassan and know a couple of your co-workers, Ken and Mark. One of my co workers is also a trapper, do you know Ivan? Living in the north many of us here know the hard work involved but like you said the enjoyment of nature as well. People forget that not long ago it was the way we all survived here. It is definitely the way nature works. Be proud of what you do and ignore the nay sayers. Well done.
  18. Where I grew up as a young lad I thought everybody HAD to fish. I got quite sick of fishing actually. But in my late 20's got back into it in a big way. I still go fishing but not as much as I used to. Almost 53 now.
