I have a GPS, fish finder combination Lowrance machine. Lowrance maps suck big time. Have the so called "Platinum" map on it now. A complete large island is missing on the map only a kilometer away from my cottage. So I can't trust what I see on the screen. I'd like to be able to put the map like the one that my handheld Garmin has on it. Any possibilities?

The south end of Nipissing holds some big ones as well. Your chances are better on Nipissing than Nosbonsing.

I listened to an interview the CBC had with the fish owner yesterday. According to him, these fish are sterile. I hope they catch the criminal(s) involved.

Several experiences come to mind, but this is one that stands out. A couple years ago while out deer hunting we were doing a chase with our group. Sitting on my watch looking into the run I heard a noise behind me. It was a bear running full tilt. My first thought was "cool" and reached for my camera in my pocket. But the bear didn't stop and changed direction and headed right for me. I dropped my camera and pulled up my rifle, clicked the safety off and was about to pull the trigger when he stopped so suddenly that he rolled over himself, straightened out and took off as fast as he came in. He was only 20 feet away when he turned around. Wish I would have stayed with the camera. Would have been a great movie. The next one would be when I was a teenager out hunting partridge. Walking through a trail near our hunt camp I proceeded up a small hump about 6 feet high in the trail. Steep enough that my head was down. When I got to the top, my head came up and came face to face with a bull moose, physically touching distance. He stood his ground and I ran the other way. Scared the crap outta me.

Years ago there were no depth sounders or GPS. The fishing lodges were full, boats were everywhere. Yet the fishing remained good. You could pull up to your favorite fishing hole, catch your 6 pickerel, no slot limit. Yet the fishing remained good. When the nets were no longer producing good numbers in the French River, they then came to the opposite end of the lake and started netting on the Gull Island reefs. That was the end of the good fishing in the South Bay. Yes, some guys do well on occasion. But keep in mind that they are using modern equipment and homing in on the last refuges. To say Nipissing fishery is still OK is a fallacy. In the summer there are only a few boats out fishing, certainly not the near the amount there once was, at least at my end of the lake. There are many fish shacks on the lake compared to what there once was. But most remain unoccupied unless the lake surface and weather co-operates. Even then, many are just there to party. Through the week on the ice it's pretty quiet with the weekends being more active. But keep in mind that ice fishing has been going on for a long time as well. My earliest memories of doing it go back to the 1960's. There were many shacks then too and those that had them were more serious fishermen. Also taking 6 home. Yes, sport fishers do take fish from the lake, but Nipissing is not large enough to sustain commercial fishing. I agree that the first Nations should be able to take enough to sustain thier own nutrition, but to take and sell it is not a viable option.

The oil is most likely unburned oil from the combustion process. I'd suggest a better quality oil that is designed to burn off better. Verify the lower unit oil is OK and not leaking however. When you ran out of fuel it most likely sucked in some dirt into the carbs. When you trailered it may have dislodged the offending dirt. It's still in there. Seafoam may help, but it is designed to remove fuel deposits, not most dirt or rust. To save yourself another tow job, it may be prudent to clean the carbs.

A new hub/drum is not expensive. Save yourself the future headaches of different wrenches. Locktite will not help with damaged threads. It is designed to keep them from coming loose.

Walking along my dock I looked into the water and noticed a black mass. Looking a little closer, it was something I had not seen for a few years.

Hit the nail on the head there Dan. In my youth I wasted a lot of coin on cars. Now my vehicles are merely transportation. Need to be reliable and functional of course. There are more important things to spend money on. And it certainly would not be spent on a piece of crap like that Dart.

Thanks guys. Not often they bite hard like that. At one time we all had a fish on. Who gets the net? They shut off almost instantly when the wind shifted slightly. Should have pulled the anchor right then.

Got out fishing for the first time in over a month today. My father, brother Mike and I headed down to the French River area for something different. We opted not to do a shore lunch due to possible thunderstorms. We headed out at 8am into a slight chop out of the north. We tried a spot where we have done well before first thing. Once there we circled the large reef until we found a good drop into 30 ft, headed up wind and tossed the anchor. I had a fish on as soon as my jig and worm hit the bottom. We tallied 11 in an hour plus one that was in the slot. I also bagged one that was an inch over the slot. We fished for another hour and a half to get the elusive 12th pickereye but to no avail. The sun was getting too hot to stay any longer. So we pulled anchor and headed for home, my brother at the wheel. Once back at the cottage we cleaned them up and had a few for lunch. All in all, a pretty good day.

Ya, the last time they stopped by me up here they tried to get close. Thought they were going to damage my boat. I said never mind, I'll come to you. Never did ask for my boaters card....Imagine that, wonder how they got theirs? HA!

Good job on the report Will. You fellows are always welcome here. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. The Spiel fishing rod is a thing of beauty. Light, sensitive and I think it will handle a big fish, if I ever get one.... We are going to have to get a simpler game to play after 10pm.

A week ago I spotted something across the yard. I went over to have a look. Wow! Haven't seen anything like this one. The guys over at the boat shop have been working on something that I'd like to see in action when it's completed. A fellow had the guys build him a boat to install a steam engine into. They constructed the hull, then the fellow installed the steam engine. Now it's back to have the seats, floor and some details made to complete it. When you stop for a shore lunch just pick up a little bit of driftwood and away you go again....

In direct injected outboards the spark plugs do need to be indexed. The electrode interferes with the fuel flow and creates an area of no fuel at the gap which creates a misfire.

There is also a big difference in the quality of parts. You can buy bargain rotors for 15 bucks, but a year later they are a rusted mess. Brake pads are also this way. Cheap bonded pads often squeal and fall apart quickly. Keep in mind that your mechanic shop has a lot of overhead to keep the business going. Insurance, tools, hoist maintenance, licensing,hydro, skills upgrading...the list is much longer I can assure you. By the way, I run an honest shop....
