  1. I wonder which end of the lake it was?
  2. Depending on the size of the log, what kind of wood and whether the grain of the wood is twisted. Don't try to split a large one down the center. Take it off the side to begin and work your way around it. Look at the log and how the grain goes. Avoid areas that have cut off branches. Not many I can't split up, even in the summer. The ones that give me a hard time I set aside and start a cut/split with the chain saw, then finish it off with the axe.
  3. This is really sad. Something to bring much needed dollars into Ontario's economy is gone. http://www.nugget.ca/2013/11/21/fedeli-blames-liberals-for-bungled-ring-of-fire-project
  4. Tough situation, been there myself. But I never would do that to a customer. If along the way something unseen does arise (it does happen to mechanics) I call the customer right away for approval. This legally can be done on the phone if written on the estimate sheet the time of call and details of discussion. Also, I believe an estimate can go over by 20% without approvals. I never have had a money issue with a customer in 20 years of business. Doing it right avoids messes like this one.
  5. Many irons in the fire. First up is replacing a flywheel in a recently acquired 2007 Buick Allure to replace her aging Caravan. Next is to fix up a vehicle for my daughter, a couple to choose from, depending on what she wants. Then it's going to be something I want to play with, a 1950 Farmall Super "A". This project had a little bit of a headstart last winter. Repaired and painted the fuel tank, straighted out a lot of dents in the grill and engine cover, removed rust and painted a few sections. Still a long way to go. Found an original type decal set too. Dunno why I am doing this, really don't need a tractor. But it's been in the family longr than I have been around. Still runs great.
  6. We have been allowed to use ATV's for the last several years on our local roads. It's surprising how many are being used. I use mine to push no start vehicles to my shop within town. Works very well! You will need to put some pressure on your local municipality Cliff.
  7. Argos could almost be classified as a hopped up wheelchair Terry But yes, I do believe they are also part of this. You would need to get a licence plate and insurance to do so.
  8. There was a private members bill introduced to allow the use of side by side and two up ATV's on the road along with the present single seat riding. It looks like it went through the house and was passed. It will now be the responsibility of each riding/municipality to allow them on local roads. The link below was the discussion in the house. Glad to see they finally came around to do this.
  9. Yes TJ, you would think they would be smart enough to utilize the hunt to include the good folks from outside the country.
  10. It's only north of Hwy17 according to what I understand. Our area gets left out. I guess the SSS program will be maintained here.
  11. Before getting a license you should have to go out a few times with a seasoned hunter who knows the score.
  12. I never click the safety off until I am serious about taking the shot. You can turn off the safety on most guns a split second before the shot anyway. I do walk with my rifle with the mag loaded when hunting, but never one in the chamber.
  13. This is from about 1965. I'm the little guy behind my Mom.
  14. Storage through the winter isn't as bad Dan. The heat seems to be the worst on the fuel. Most likely due to evaporation. It's possible you may be getting better fuel up your way too. There is most certainly fuel issues and it's a real good idea to use a fuel stabilizer. Every year we get at least a dozen blown engines due to a lean mixture caused by a film of green deposits on the main jets. It allows the engine to run like a banshee....for about 10 minutes. then POOF, burned piston.
  15. Yep. 60 is way underpowered. Even on Nipissing my 18.5ft is too small, can't imagine going out on Lake O in a 16.5
  16. Was a volunteer for about 20 years, but thankfully this never happened to me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iadu_P7zdhg
  17. Not all 2 strokes have oil in the combustion chamber. Direct injected ones do not.
  18. Take out the lower drain plug and look for metal particles in the oil. If you do, it's time to take it apart and fix it. May be less to repair than to replace the unit asembly. It's possible as was mentioned that the shift linkage may need to be repaired too.
  19. I have found that installing the top on the boat and letting it sit in a hot sun for a couple hours does the trick. But it's going to be a while before you can try that
  20. Each engine will have it's own way of using up spark plugs. Lots of trolling/slow running would be harder on a spark plug on some engines due to a colder running engine. This could make for some incomplete combustion and deposits on the plug. Older 2 strokes would tend to foul plugs before they would wear out. Today's engines run a whole lot cleaner due to better fuel control and better oils for 2 strokes. This allows for longer lasting spark plugs. I have seen some great appearing spark plugs that are no good. The porcelain insulator that surrounds the electrode can accumulate a film from fuel and oil that becomes a conductor. This conduction will cause the spark to follow down the side of the insulator and go to ground rather than jump the gap. I can tell when my engine is due for plugs. It runs a little rough on cold starts. If you run an engine that only uses 2 or 4 plugs, change 'em every year anyway, what the heck is a couple plugs for peace of mind? Fuel injected engines should be able to get a couple seasons before replacing. These engines run cleaner than most. As always, check your owners manual for it's recommendation.
  21. I can't ever remember a pellet gun not legal to hunt small game with. I did when I was a kid, and that is getting to be quite a while ago
  22. I'd say with 400 hrs on it that it's time to change them. DanD is right.
  23. Have nothing against someone that wants to build a dock or even a boathouse for that matter. Not really much different than a garage at a house. But it needs to be done in an environmentally friendly manner and with some taste to the surroundings. Plus the building codes themselves. Most crib docks actually create habitat, not sure why there is so much against them. As fishermen, you all know this. In this case, I have no sympathy for the fellow. I'd be inclined to make him tear it down. If they don't, it will certainly set a precedent in the future.
  24. Leafs played a solid game tonight. They could go places if they continue like that. Reimer is the better goaltender right now.
