  1. I was thinking about you and this very subject today. Your temperatures can fluctuate a lot up there, surprising sometimes how warm it can get. But I guess it can only last so long before winter takes it's grip. How much sunlight do you have now? The water temps have dropped a lot here in the last few days too. May get a couple more weeks of travel before I give mine the lift out. It will be a couple of months before the shacks appear here.
  2. Thank you for making the trip up Brian. Your kindness is very much appreciated. Sorry that you hadn't the time to hang out for a while. Would have been good to sit down and have a long chat. Looking forward to heading out on the water with ya sometime.
  3. Seen guys use 2wd trucks with limited slip differentials, but they had chains on the rear wheels. The issue also is that when you bank up and the snow falls behind the blade even a 4wd can have a hard time reversing out.
  4. Like Lew mentioned, if you have a place to plow it to, get a plow. We have a rather large yard to clear so we have both. We plow it into banks and if we need to, use the blower to keep the banks back. On cold and windy nights, it isn't fun sitting on the blower.
  5. I bet the CO's could tell a few humdinger stories too.
  6. My experience is very similar to Lews. I cannot recall ever being checked by a CO when fishing or hunting and its been 40 years since I got my hunting licence. I have had the creel cencus boat come in a couple times, but they don't ask for anything other than fish numbers and species.
  7. Thank you for that info. I would never have guessed that one is poisonous. It looked like the most edible one. Ha!
  8. Great! Thank you for looking. It's a 1959. It will have a silver ring on the top of the hood. I have a matching 1959 5 1/2. I ran the identical 10 hp engine when I was a kid.
  9. Have you seen this outboard Fisherman? If you have, is it all white?
  10. Just took a quick trip with the camera around the cottage. Found these. Some don't look too good. One looked like it may be OK. But I'd never try it without knowing for sure. These were the first ones that don't look right. Especially underneath. This one looked like it may be possible. Not sure if this one is an earlier version of the previous one. Any thoughts?
  11. HA! Joe wouldn't lie Fishing is closed so I can't take ya out.
  12. Thank you Fisherman and Brian. I have a love for these old engines. I explained to Brian in a message why I'd like to get this. I'll be at my cottage next Saturday Brian. Let me know when and where to meet you.
  13. Hey Brian. Thanks! I'll take you up on that
  14. If it's a 10, it would be from the 50's or early 60's. In 65 they went to a 9.5. Great little engines. If I was closer I'd pick it up.
  15. They could easily Davey. But obsolescence is what makes our economic world turn
  16. Work on vehicles for a living. A very large percentage of vehicles I work on are pickup trucks. As far as maintenance between 2 and 4 wheel drives isn't much. Certainly no difference in brake costs. The added section of the powertrain parts such as transfer case, front drive shaft, differential and CV shafts can add to costs, but with the added benefit of having 4x4 certainly outweighs this. The 4x4 parts are generally quite reliable. Wheel bearings/hub assemblies are an issue with most makes and models of vehicles with this type of bearing design. 4x4's are not any more prone for this failure than anything else. As far as brakes are concerned, maintaining the calipers is a big factor in how long they last and how well they work. Driving habits such as hard stops, jackrabbit driving and trailer pulling all effect longevity. Also I see a lot of brake issues with vehicles that sit for long periods without being driven. The rotors tend to rust and this causes premature wear as well.
  17. When I install tires on aluminum rims I take the time to power wire brush the bead area and paint the surface. This helps prevent corrosion that causes these leaks and also helps to seal the tire to the rim. I don't get comebacks, even after several years.
  18. Careful with going to smaller size rims. Sometimes there isn't enough clearance for brake calipers.
  19. I agree Craig. I am at Nipissing and it's hardly north
  20. After owning a few two wheel drive trucks years ago, and then driving more than my share of 4x4's I would NEVER go back to a 2WD. Even in everyday winter driving it's handy. No spinning from a stop or struggling up inclines. If you do a lot of boat launching I'd highly recommend a 4x4.
  21. Nope. All different and some appeared like they were in it for a while.
  22. Years ago I once removed a customers tire to repair it. I found 5 nails in the tire. I think that we sold him a new one.
  23. Thats a good sized doghouse Chris I'd prefer a cold winter. At least it makes good ice and one can travel on the lake. That half rain/snow type weather is no good for anything. Too much snow also makes for slush on the lakes and that can be a real pain in the butt.
  24. Could be an ignition issue too. When you shut off an engine some components in the ignition can actually get hotter because the cooling fan is no longer running. Heat from the combustion chamber can soak into the ignition and cause an open circuit in a weak point. I'd check it for spark when this takes place as well.
  25. I have one at the cottage that I have only tried once Will. We can give it a try next trip.
