  1. Hey there. Lots of great info guys thanks Not sure battery is dead. Charger was at home not up north. Not 100 percent sure of battery specs. Is a deep conversation clear though Going to do a full inspection next weekend based on all the tips. Something got in prop or a short seem the most logical For the panel stuff I think we are going to take boat to local marina in a few weeks when he's done with all of the opening stuff-right now it will sit until he can get to it. He's a solid guy and has known my dad for years so if trolling motor is still an issue will ask him to take a look Cheers and thanks again it's appreciated Gordy
  2. Thanks guys Charger we used also charged the cranking battery. Which works fine Greg to answer your questions 1 wires run directly to the battery. The trolling motor and boat are the same age and both have never been altered from original equipment 2. Going on memory here but I believe there is a breaker box on one of the wires coming from trolling motor to the battery 3. It's a one battery system for the trolling motor and one cranking motor for the big engine The best way for me to describe it is. Fresh battery, fully charged but once you start running it on trolling, motor the charge is "sucked" out in a matter of 5 to 10 minutes Thanks guys G
  3. Sorry terry didn't really answer all Fullt charged at home before heading to trailer, and then appeared to be a full charge just before I started running the trolling motor
  4. Thanks for the replies, here's my Answers Battery is fully charged at home - and a good read Even when I first hooked up and just check the strength (lttle test button on the minn kota) it says full power but then with 5 to 10 minutes its dead Could try leaving it unhooked right until we get to a spot- but not confidant as had tried that w old battery Bad ground wire? Not sure - how would you check All connections seem to be fine when getting it ready- but we have had wire issues in boat before
  5. So we were up at balsam today, open up the trailers and get the boat ready. Took the boat out, fully charged, brand new battery. Starting trolling a weedline and within 5 minutes the battery was dead. Not the first time this has happened but no idea what the issue is. Battery isn't the issue May be unrelated or not but another thing we noticed. Boat has 5 controls on the dash. Bilge, lights, fore and after livewell switches. Also has a radio/cd player on the dash. Today only 3 of the switches working. Basically one half of the panel. Looked underneath and didn't see any obvious shorts/disconnect So anyone ever see this with a trolling motor and battery? Trolling motor is about 5 years old. Minnesota kota power drive v2. 55 lb thrust Starting happening last year, assumed it was old battery (also 5 years old). But doesn't seem to be with it doing it on a brand new fully charged battery Any help/thoughts appreciated Gordy
  6. No big trip planned this year Balsam lake in no June for a father and two son trip for a few days which is always a blast Short two night trip to Algonquin park for a first ever interior trip. Route still tbd but it looks like Ragged will be home base. Excited and a tad nervous as a newbie Only other trip will be an find and skins weekend on Sturgeon lake with the boys either September or October Will also try for a few 1 day trips to Balsam were brother, dad and kids to try to get the little ones hooked My 4 year old picked out a Princess tackle boxat BPS this weekend on her own accord. Trying not to read to much into it lol Can't wait - see u later snow!
  7. My family have had a place on Balsam lake for almost 40 years I believe it's about $2400 plus hydro for a regular Site and $3600 plus for waterfront (waterfront for 12 ft widespread only) The beach is beautiful probably one of the nicest spots on the lake for swimming They also haveprivate docks and pull ups for rent Beforwarned its a family place where rules that are enforced but if you have kids its amazing. They have the right away Cheers Gordy
  8. Hey there - good luck on your quest Last March I decided I wanted to lose some weight - and for added motivation my brother and i made a bet largest % weight loss by Sept won - loser bought winner his choice of single malt scotch I followed the Eat Clean diet to begin with and then made my own modfications plus I started to walk the dog for 30 minutes every night and do 50 push ups a day I lost 45 lbs and have kept it off - started at 230 and have been 185 for 6 months Check out eat clean - bottom line - limited salt and refined sugar, good carbs and limited booze - and for me the weight melted off For carbs - i ate a lot of sprouted grain bread - ezekial is the brand - and always began the day w plain rolled oats with flax seed and bulgur wheat added in - fills you up Cheers Gordy
  9. Our tradition is having a single malt scotch w my brother and Dad. Lots of favourites but this year it will be Oban. Since its pretty warm here bro and I may pop out for a Montecristo # 2- best cigar in the world IMO Happy Holidays all Gordy
  10. For those that collect Air Miles and shop online use: www.airmileshops.ca Its an affiliate website login and shop at Cabelas, Bass Pro, LL Bean and Sierra Trading Post to name a few and you earn airmiles om your purchases/ I also have Bass Pro's loyalty card - you earn cash back on each purchase I don't spend a lot on fishing gear- and I already earned a free $10 in about 6 months
  11. Can't remember which magaine/website but a writer/fishing pro went an entire year (hard and soft water) using only a jig and white grub and documented the results- will see if I can find it and post -was a great read
  12. I tend to agree - I'm a tackle junkie but I may be on the path to reform Took my 50 lb tackle bag on our trip to Brennan Harbour this year Needed a small tray with bottom bouncers, worm harnesses, plastic worms, 3 rapalas and 1 square billed crank - that accounted for 99% of the fish and would have saved my back and freed up space in the boat Ive only ever ice fished for perch but all I have ever used is a buckshot spoon and a minnow head with any success
  13. All of my ice fishing gear was bought at Can Tire and most of it for 30-50% off Best buy was a Berkley lightning rod combo 2 pack-got it on sale for $29 about 4 years ago-so far both rods still holding up well I also bought my auger and tip ups as well-again no complaints
  14. Congrats-awesome news and excellent pics My daughters first rod was/is one of my ice fishing rods-perfect size
  15. Great post- as someone who loves to fish for muskie but has yet to land a big one this is really informative Kudos to you and others for sharing the knowledge - I plan on printing this post and add it to the binder we keep in the boat-articles, fishing logs, regs, maps and other useful info Cheers Gordy
  16. X2 don't own one myself but used one on our fishing trip this year and was very impressed I think by the end of the week I was more confident in the finder than I am our much more expensive Lowrance 565 - although in fairness that may be a user issue
  17. Awesome report as always Ive only ever fishing BQ from a dock on Big island - no walleye but good largie fishing We have talked for years about heading there for opener or the fall - these pics should motivate me - I have never been in the vicinity of walleye that size! Cheers Gordy
  18. Thanks for posting Chris These type of reports are what keeps me coming back to OFC-even when it might not be the type of adventure or trip for me-I still love to read them-little escapes Other times they are places I'm interested in travelling to-so honest detailed reports are awesome-its like tripadvisor for fishing I don't need honey holes etc-but broad feedback, high level techniques are great when trying to decide on where to go next out of possibly 10s of 1000s of choices Cheers Gordy
  19. Thanks Chris-this is awesome and both spots have made it on yhe spreadsheet Parks is also on there Right now we haven't included many options. From Nakina-mainly because I'll max out at 7/8 days away and don't want to burn that much time driving We also are looking at the potential of blowing the budget up and doing either Kesagami Lodge or one of the Wilderness North Lodges (my father does one every year and loves it) Cheers Gordy
  20. Okay-cool idea thanks Chris We haven't as a group defined the parametres but here's mine: No more than a 9 to 10 hour drive from the GTA Limited to no other cabins on the lake Outposts have indoor showers, lights and running water Target species walleye and pike(smallies as well would be a nice bonus) Lots of fish w the opp to catch a trophy (walleye over 28, pike over 38) Like the idea of having portage lakes/rivers from your outpost-especially if its for a diff species Prefer a deep shield or even Balsam lake type lakes as opposed to shallow weedy ones Max budget of $1500 per guy all in (food, booze and outfitter cost) Some that have caught my eye-White River Air-Hambleton and Pickle in particular Hawk air-deluxe cabins, Kanipahow-Emabarass lake outpost, Lake Anjigami Ogis Point outpost Anyway-thanks to anyone who wants to post Oh-realize Canoe Canada is outside of the 9 to 10 hour drive-but interested because it covers off a lot of our wants and two members of our group really love the idea of exploring Quetico Cheers G
  21. Close- I'm a marketing guy who started out working with analysts- definitely use excel for personal life-budgeting, packing lists - love it-keeps me organized lol
  22. Geez- almost feel like I should just PM you with all my questions Mike-you are a weath of knowledge I hear about the paddle and camp option- my concern is that I hate fishing out of a canoe-mainly because I suck at it... Plus I like a bed and a shower when I can get it But a few guys are very interested in Quetico-so this seemed like a good medium - the Little Gull option actually gets you into Quetico proper with a canoe for day trips As always-thanks for the help I'm actually building out a trip evaluation spreadsheet right now- 4 different options and then sub categories about specific lodges, links to reports etc as a way to get us down to a type of trip (fly in outpost, fly in lodge, drive/boat to lodge/outpost and paddlie trip). Cheers Gordy
  23. Thanks Mike generous offer as always Will shoot you a Pm for sure. I like WRA for the cabins as well Parks based on your awesome reports is also in the mix as well Gordy
  24. Just wondering if anyone has experience with Canoe Canada and their fly in outposts or the paddle in cabin Interested in Quetico for our 2014 trip (someone's 40th bday ) Not to interested in fishing out of a canoe for an entire week though-love the fact that quite a few of their outposts have a main lake with boat fish but then many portage with Canoe or stashed boat options-especially little Gull and Namaygoos options Www.canoecanada.com Cheers Gordy
  25. Thanks guys will definitely check out the options mentioned above
