  1. It looks like I may need to find a lower priced rod. As much as I'd love to have the St. Croix Avid, the $210 price tag is hard to swallow with my limited funds right now. I was looking at the Shimano Clarus that runs $90. Has anyone used the Shimano steelhead rods?
  2. For casting I use 50# Power Pro or Stren Super Braid & a 80# flouro leader.
  3. Yes it is helping. Thanks for all the info guys. I'm going to start with a spinning outfit first before I go dropping some coing on a float rod. I'll just have to wait to see how much $$$ I'll have left over after X-mas shopping for the wife & kids then I can buy myself a present or 2. BTW, I'll most likely go with a St. Croix Avid (9 or 9.5 footer) since that's what I was looking at before I started this thread.
  4. Go with a higher lb thrust for that current. If you'll be vertical jigging then go with a cable steer motor. Cable steer responds quicker & will keep you over the fish. I've used both Minn Kota & Motorguides & when it comes to going though weeds the Minn Kota kicks Motorguide's . I've had the 50 lb Minn kota on my boat for 10 years now & I abuse it on a regular basis & it hasn't stopped working yet. My buddy replaced his 2nd Motorguide with a Minnkota last year & now he is much happier.
  5. Thanks Canuckfan. I guess I should have mentioned that I'm in Michigan & rods here cost a little less than in Ontario. I've been told reports of decent steelhead fishing during December & January in rivers that I drive by so I thought once my deer hunting is over I'd try my hand at some steelhead.
  6. I’m looking to get into steelhead fishing & I need a recommendation on what length/action spinning rod that I should get. I’ll mostly be casting spinners. I’m not looking for a rod that’s going to break the bank but at the same time I don’t what a cheap one either. Any other suggestions for a newbie steel header would be appreciated. Thanks
  7. Clicking that ad still brings in money, just like clicking the Fishin Hurts (P3TA) ad.
  8. I tried it this year because a guy from another fishing site that I fish with every so often highly recommended it. I cannot recommend it at all & I say don’t waste your money on it. The line frays a lot & is by no means nearly invisible under water. I caught easily over 100 smallies this year on the line but I also lost a lot due to break offs. The only thing I liked about the line is that it cast really nice but it’s not even close as sensitive as Stren Super Braid. The line kind of reminds me of dental floss. Btw, I was using 6 lb Crystal for throwing light jigs/plastics & spinners on a med. light rod.
  9. Back in September I was fishing a bass tourney on Lake St. Clair, my partner had 2 musky come up & take his fouled lure off the surface as he was retrieving it & I had one bite me off at the boat as well. This all happened between 7:00AM & 7:30AM. A week before that a another guy I know caught a 46" musky that attacked his 10" smallmouth & wouldn't let go so he netted it. That happened before the sun came up.
  10. Mmmmmmmmmmmm. I could go for some of that heart attack on a plate along with that slice of cheesecake & those Olive Garden bread sticks. Me + McDonalds = Me sitting on the toilet for long periods of time & naps in between toilet breaks.
  11. Wow! That's cheap. I wonder what's wrong with the boat? Accident maybe? My choice would be the Ranger 620VS multi-species boat. Ranger 620VS
  12. Ha ha. They just rasied the toll price on the Michigan side of the Blue Water Bridge (Port Huron to Sarnia) from $2.50 to $2.75 because of the declining US dollar. All this thanks to Dubya.
  13. That fish wasn't caught in the Winnipeg River. I caught it in my swimming pool just last week.

    Sorry...

Thanks for making me hungry at 8:30 in the morning.
  15. Congrats on landing your 1st ski. My first wasn't that big but I was happy anyway.
  16. If you are casting at night you just might hook into some of these: None of those walleye had 3 eyes but I did catch one back in April in the DR that only had one eye. You will need jig heads that are no less than 1/2 oz. The current in the Detroit River gets up to 7 Mph so the current will take your bait down stream pretty fast. Cast along the break walls at night with jerkbaits if you see or hear fish busting the surface. If fishing during the day you will want to fish a jig with a 4" straight tailed worm (pumpkinseed or black works best) or a Fin-S minnow (rainbow trout or smelt color work best). There is also plenty of channel cats, smallies, & sheephead. There are also some big musky (50+") in there as well. Also some sturgeon but those show up more in the spring.
  17. I can’t comment on the price because I have no idea what that boat goes for. As for the boat having too much horse power. You can never have too much power. That extra power will come in handy when you have it loaded up with a couple of buddies & their gear. I have a 35HP motor on my 14’5” Sea Nymph, which is the max HP rating for my boat & it’s still not enough power.
  18. Personally if I was planning on keeping the boat I would take it in to be welded. There are products sold at marine stores that sell stuff in a tube that will patch holes in aluminum boats. There is also HTS-2000 that I have seen advertised that you can weld yourself with a simple propane torch. HTS-2000
  19. Cool video. I watched the other one below that one were the biker hit the deer. They sure can jump. I once watch one jump an 8 foot high fence just to get inside my buddy's grandfather's garden.
  20. Tiger musky are the result of 2 male pike breeding with a female musky. Tiger musky grow faster than pike or musky but don’t reach the size of a regular musky. Male tiger musky don’t breed & female tigers usually don’t breed either but a very small percentage of them do. Since pike spawn before musky, you will see the pike population increase quicker than musky. Here in Michigan the DNR stocks some inland lakes with tigers but those caught in Lake St. Clair occurred naturally from pike breeding with musky.
  21. When you crank the handle to close the bail it will sometimes (depending on the reel) throw a loop in the line if there is any slack line. The high quality reels usually don't do this.
  22. My old '73 Pontiac Lemans ran after the battery was pulled as did my '79 GMC Jimmy.
  23. A tip to avoid line twists is to close the bail by hand & don't crank the reel to close it.
