  1. OK, winter gas you pump while wearing boots, gloves, a hat and a coat. Summer you can get away with wearing shorts, a t shirt and sandles. Simple. Well, how much wittier can one be at 5:30 in the morning
  2. You should talk to Terry. Plastic water bottles aren't the problem, it's the leaving them behind. The idiots leaving Horton's cups everywhere are no better!
  3. I don't doubt what you and Terry say at all. The problem according to the mechanic, is the fact that many boat owners do not use their motors frequently so therefore condensation build up and absorbtion by the alcohol in the fuel. I experienced it as a fact. I tried Shell 91 in my car this week for the first time since I have had this car as it has been running like crap recently. I actually ran it right down to near empty, something I very rarely do as I usually don't let it get below a half tank. Put 40 bucks in it which was about half a tank at $1.40/L but 3 cents off for an air miles card so I paid $1.37/L while reg. was $1.24/L. So far, knock on wood, it is running pretty good and I appear to have gone from 12.5 - 13.4 L/100km to 10.4 - 11.3 L/100km. same distance of about 54 km round trip daily on a commuter route averaging 100- 110 km/hr. So for the trial run it is looking decent. I will try it again the next fill up probably today and see what happens. It could be just that I have ran most of the crap out of the fuel system and it is like a clean start or there could be something to it. See what happens over the next week or so and then I'll probably go back to running the same old cheap Pioneer reg gas in the car as I'm such a tight wad!
  4. OUCH! Hate when they do that to you. Hope they gave you a bit of a break. Computer code couldn't find it?
  5. Terry, read my first post again and see what the mec. said about a car and an outboard. Also what ecmilley said. Hey, I'll admit I'm no expert or an experienced, trained, documented and licenced mechanic so why would you argue against a guy who runs a busy repair shop with 2 guys working for him? And my own motor and wallet was the evidence. But then again I run into those who argue with me at least once a week in my own field. I guess there are people everywhere who'll argue that it's a rainy miserable day when the sun shines brightly and there isn't a cloud to be seen as far as the horizon reaches. So why not pay a few cents more at the pump for your boat's gas? I hope for you and your passengers sake you don't get stuck with a failing motor out in the middle of a lake with a thunderstorm coming at you. Well then at least if that should happen then I can say "I told ya so!" Happy No harsh feelings, just my opinion learned from a personal experience and from others who have encountered the same issue.
  6. Well Terry, I'll put it this way. The motor was a 2005, 25hp 2 stroke Johnson I bought brand new. I didn't use it daily or sometimes not even weekly. I ran the brand name Evinrude fuel conditioner/stabilizer (smells like crap!) in it always after I read several topics here in regards to ethanol and the trouble it causes with boat motors. I thought I was safe and doing the right thing, even the marina I bought it at told me this. After I started to have problems and couldn't get it into the shop where I purchased it at I ended up taking it to a repair shop in Ancaster. It cost me about $400 in the end last fall to get it straightened out . I sold it this spring due to other reasons. Maybe you have been lucky with your outboard or manage to run it more frequently than I, but I learned my lesson the wallet hurting way. I have to say it wasn't much fun having motor trouble out in the middle of Hamilton Harbour but it could have been in a place much more remote or in bad weather.
  7. Great looking trip!
  8. Outboard mechanic told me last year....as I was forking over a wad of cash for carb repairs, never, ever put any gas in the boat's fuel tank that contains ethanal! He also has no faith in additives that are supposed to solve the ethal issues as they just soak up the moisture and over time if you don't run your tank dry and keep topping it up the water accumulates as it's still there, all absorbed by the conditioner/additive and you'll still end up with problems. My motor was proof of that. He said to only use Shell premium. All the others are OK for your car since you drive it daily but a boat can sit for days or weeks at a time without being ran and the condensation build up creates havoc! I ran the top Shell gas until I sold it this spring. You don't believe it! Go ahead and keep running the cheap crap in your boat and expect to pay the shop in the end! Pay a buck or so more per tank and you may prevent a washed out fishing trip and then have to pay more later.
  9. Don't see the humour in it. The guy at the helm is an idiot! Actually I want to say something more to the point but the forum censors won't allow me. Just the type of you want buzzing around while your fishing. Too bad he didn't bust himself up real bad just to teach him a lesson.
  10. Yep. I did the same. Then one day I actually sat through the whole show. Now I'm hooked! I want to go down there and work for them! Hell, I'll work for free!
  11. Very sorry to hear the bad news Roger. All my best wishes to you and your family.
  12. Sorry about you mother passing. I'm sure you and your family have many fond memories. Her problems are past now and she is now free of any burdens.
  13. Sorry to inform you Lew, but that's not a pick up.....it's a Lincoln! Nice ride. Hope you like it as much and even more than the old one.
  14. Really sad that this is happening. I have said this before and still I wonder why provincial parks loose $ on camping fees when private campgrounds can turn a profit and the fees are similiar? Private camps have operating costs too and also generally are mortaged to the max which is one thing provincial parks don't have a need for.
  15. Exactly my point! Many look up to colleges and universities with respect and think that they are the savoir to a bright future. That bugs me as well as the amount of government (our) money that funds them. They continue to offer courses at the students and our expense. Cut back on the bullcrap programs and concentrate on the ones that are of benefit to society. What is the point of turning out 300 plus grads every year in a particular program where maybe 20 jobs are available province wide? It is a waste of all of our money and time. All of us including the government we are victims of deception. Yes the student needs to research the possibilities, sometimes though research provides false information, is misinterpreted or the information presented is scewed. "Buyer beware" is such a true phrase. The field my son has tried to enter is in great need of staff, but with cutbacks, which the "education industry" is aware of, continues to pump them out. When his research told him there is a high demand for his field and the fact that males are needed and in short supply plus he was told while still in high school he is guaranteed a job and told he is a natural at what he would be trained to do then the light at the end of the tunnel is shut off it is depressing. Not just for him but all of the hundreds, thousands? of grads who are facing similiar situations. Our young people are facing challenges that many of us boomers never had to deal with. In this case the trick for them is to turn what they have learned around and put a different spin on it, use that knowledge in a different way, apply it to new situations, be imaginative. However so many don't look at education as a business, they look at it as something special, a sacred cow maybe? I don't have a problem with money being made as long as it is legit. Even a friend of mine who has been a teacher at Mohawk didn't look at it as a business but he learned to turn his thoughts around and agreed with me that yes it is just a business in the end. Anyway, I feel as I'm hijacking the thread by getting somewhat sidetracked. I apologize.
  16. Nice catch, watch the bigger boats on Cooch when you're in a small boat. There are many good spots to fish there.
  17. Bushart, I do remember the Stoney Creek Levi's plant and their move. Wasn't that in the building that now houses Mohawk College, taking money from students so they can train them for non existing jobs? My son is one of those (although the Mountain Campus) and they still continue to pump out graduates in his field every year for jobs that don't exist because school boards are so underfunded.
  18. Aluminum cap that and it will look like.... Like said, prep it properly, don't paint it while the sun is beating down on it and it should last 5 years, 4 years, 5 years, 6 years? Well, who knows? Only time will tell. That is a focal point on your house and it has some nice details to it, you want it to look nice and capping just won't cut it, that is unless you can find a guy that is willing to spend the time to bend all those little steps (creases) in it and do it in one piece with a cap on top and flared to deflect the rain. And you are willing to pay the bucks to have it done that way. A quick simple job and it will look like I said in my first line.
  19. Winter 1989/90, we spent some time in San Antonio. Guess what the big news story was? Levi moving their jeans plant across the border to Mexico. Reason, payroll, in the states the plant workers were getting 4 bucks an hour, wow eh so much money! Across the border they were paying 4 bucks a day! And probably got away with much more due to fewer environmental restrictions etc. Americans have similiar problems.
  20. Then if you feel that way you shuld stick to Canadian Tire to buy your tackle.
  21. I used that argument one time when discussing this with a buddy. His answer was right, but they could have been observing you, see you having a shore lunch and get you that way. Hey who knows? My feeling is that yes this is possible. But even more likely this would be the situation. They charge you, the case goes to court, it may get tossed out, it may not get tossed out, who knows? What I do know is that your reputation has been compromised, it has been published and the way media presents all cases the public automatically assumes guilt. Then to hurt you even more you just spent a ton of money on legal fees and made your lawyer happier as he spends your money on his next vacation. Why bother trying to press your luck? It's just not worth it. Follow the rules and if you feel that bad luck is looking for you then keep the grocery store receipts for the sportfish you bought until you eat it. Not all that difficult to understand.
  22. Just lke Lefroy said. I've never had a boat larger or heavier than a 16' tinny with a 25 on it. but did just like that, a rope that's just long enough tied off to the upright on the trailer, unhooked winch and back her down, a light tap on the brake peddle, boat floats free but still secure. Exit vehicle, grab the tied off line while passing the hitch onto the dock, tie it off and park. Less then 5 minutes done and on my way. I could do it solo with ease and at times more efficient than if I had a dockhand. (Wife, son ya know what I mean) Sometimes it's more difficult to launch when a "helpful" stranger lends a hand! But I never refused assistance. Now that the boat is sold one thing I don't miss is the inconsiderate idiots who tie up the ramp uncovering, uhooking and loading gear right at the ramp entrance. It happened so many times last year. It's even worse if you're on the water waiting for your turn and incoming boats are coming in waiting to delaunch and try to jump ahead of you.
  23. 2nd. vote for uhaul. I did my old van myself, not difficult to do. My current car I took it to Uhaul, just under 300 bucks and included the draw bar and tax. All depends on if you want to get down on your back in the driveway, 10 years ago I was OK with it, not these days I'm afraid to say. Hitch World on the mountain is close in price and have a good reputation, they didn't have one to fit my car in stack and the same went for the old van which I had an appointment booked and they said they had one. Went all the way up there (lived in Burlington back then) and they didn't have one in stock but they had confirmed it on the phone that they did. Crappy tire puts them on sale once in a while but when it came to my car they would have had to order it in and they wouldn't give me the sale price on it, sort of p'd me off! At the time I had more than that to say to them about what my opinion was!
  24. Not much of a worry when it comes to the pier or anywhere along the bay/harbour or even the Hamilton lake front. None of these locations are unknown and are frequented often.
