Yup, I got my first one from cabelas and was very pleased with the quality and castability of the rod and reel. I have the Cabelas Stowaway and CSR reel and as I said am pleased with it. The combo you picked out looks pretty good. Enjoy the sport

Yup its a fly reel... They are not really a "big deal" just a new approach to fishing... if ya pick up a rod and some line you can have a great time on local rivers and streams and I doubt you will be dissapointed

yup, I have too heard of a solid few inches but not everywhere... Still unsafe conditions in most areas and I have yet to hear of any operators out there, my guess would be the weekend before Christmas if Ice continues to form and it doesn't deteriorate any... either way be safe out there, the lake is far from completely frozen

Congrats on the successful day on the Ice... funny how there are eyes being caught on ice and out of boats in the BOQ lol

I have one and its great after a long day fishing... Especially if you are keeping perch and other panfish...

Well I stumbled across this today and though I would share: Our Outdoors: ‘Twas the night before first ice By Nick Simonson ‘Twas the night before first ice, and all through the lake, Not a fish had been stirring, not even a splake. The buckets were filled with my rods and my tackle, In hopes that the perch would like jigs trimmed with hackle. The tip-ups were strung with nylon and leaders, To deal with the teeth of big predator feeders. The minnows were purchased and set on the steps, The Vexilar charged to read various depths. When out under the ice there arose such a clatter, I sprang into my coveralls to assess the matter. In the dark to the pickup I flew like a flash, And drove to the station to fill the auger with gas. The full moon on the breast of the new-frozen water, Meant the ice-season action could not get much hotter. Alone toward the lake I started to steer, Soon the roar of the auger was all I could hear. Setting tip-ups and jigging on the ice all around, Searching for fish like a veteran bloodhound. More rapid than lightning to my baits they came, I hooted and hollered and called them by name. Now, NORTHERN, now WALLEYE, now BLUEGILL and CRAPPIE! Come, RAINBOW and YELLOW PERCH and you don’t have to stop-pie! To the treble of tip-up, to the jig or the spoon! Now bite good and hard and I’ll be here past noon! The excitement, the passion, the fins and the tails, Impossible to measure with rulers and scales. The colors of fishes of varying size, The wonder of nature that lit up my eyes. And then, in an instant, I set the hook hard, I looked down and saw her - she must measure a yard! In gold and silver and tipped with white, She promised to battle me into the night. Rolling and twisting with her strength she did brag, As from my reel she pulled on the drag. I cranked and it squealed as her head neared the hole, Grabbing her quickly, I achieved my goal. Her eyes - twinkling silver, her gills how they flared, Sharp curved white teeth, her pointy mouth bared. I unhooked the spoon with a twist of my plier, And gazed at a walleye anyone would admire. Better suited she was for story than plate, Watching her swim away, I had to feel great. To let free such a whopper to catch one day again, Is a thing that is done by the greatest sportsmen. In the picture I took she was preserved for all, And the photo was enough for me to hang on the wall. The sun was then setting, and the day felt complete, To the truck I went packing with snow at my feet. Though cold all around and night beginning to fall, I was warmed with a memory that could top them all. As I drove away, the lake leaving my sight, I thought long and hard of that day and that night. And the next time I’m bothered with everyday chores, I’ll just remember this time, spent in…our outdoors.

I was itching to get out so I was cautious and did, and am happy to have gone, even though I didnt get anything... It is early so if ya do venture out be really careful, because most lakes aren't that good right now... Hmmm, will I also be the first to post a SUCCESSFUL ice report this season?

the ice is still too thin for explosives mike..., but maybe i could try addin some appo juice to the water...

Hey all...Just wanted to tell yas I found some nice ice near me... a solid 3" of good ice... Went out drilled 8 or so holes and dropped the lines for pike... although we didn't get any hits, it was great to see I can now get out for Pike... Also have a nice semi permanent cooler on the ice which you can see in my pics holds 8 pop but might just need to be expanded, sure does keep em ice cold... lol Here's the cooler boys and the fishing area: Well maybe next time I will have some fish with the report... Until then stay safe on the ice and Tight lines Bill

I checked out my little pike hole and theres a solid 3" there... something to pass the time, looks like minden/haliburton will have to wait... dang work!

Might have to check out some warm blooded animals tomorrow morning though have a tag to fill for the deer and have to work the night shift friday and sat... hmmm, well sleep is underrated... Might try and take a drive up to simcoe though... Hard choice... I do have all day... Grrr, I wish this was easier

If ya want one for pike and Big 'eyes, go for a med heavy or so rod and get a spring tip so you can use it for perch and the like... Frabill is pretty good for perch and panfish and I have a st croix for pike and eyes

Hey all.... I was just wondering if anyone had some info on any frozen over lakes or decent spots... I am hopefully going to go friday but am not too sure of the ice conditions everywhere and wanted to figure out if I could go out... couple inches of good ice is good. I know there are a few good ones pretty close to frozen, if not ready to go in minden and was thinking abouth that but might even check out something closer... Any species, cabin fever is setting in! Feel free to PM me and if ya wanna try and hook-up that is awesome too. So any condition reports would be great... Might even consider simcoe in the shallows for perch (rope to the tree ), guess I am gonna have to wait and see. Thanks in advance
