I wonder if extra corn for ethanol is contributing to this effect. https://ca.news.yahoo.com/ontario-has-endured-polar-vortex-thundersnow-and-195405570.html

I would hate to have to choose between Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. Maybe Johnson or another candidate can make a break through.

Agreed. I have never had a sunburn or even a noticable tan though my clothes. Unless the rays that cause tans and burns are different than the rays that cause skin cancer, I think that any clothing seems to offer pretty good protection. I am not convinced that special UV blocking clothes are required. Perhaps some people who have extra sensitive skin (perhaps from radiation therapy) may require the extra protection of special clothing; but normal clothing seems to be enough for most people.

Was that in grizzly country? Or, was it just a black bear? Oops, I guess you answered my question while I was typing.

Pressure treated would can damage aluminum. Cedar or hard wood may be a better choice.

You could try Radio World. Unfortunately, you may have to order it. I think it is more of a specialty item; there probably are not very many places that will keep in stock.

Quest to build a garage in Richmond Hill..
John Bacon replied to RangerGuy's topic in General Discussion
But it seem that they have approved this one. Now they want some free land in exchange for doing so. Perhaps there is a valid logical reason for tying the free land to the issuance of the permit; but, if there isn't then this would seem to be extortion. The lawsuit doesn't have to be to recover the fees; it could be to allow him to build without having to give them half of his land. Or, if there are extenuating circumstances; they the court could order the fees to be returned. I do agree that under normal cirmcustances the fees would not be refunded if your application was rejected. But, that is not what seems to be happening here. -

Quest to build a garage in Richmond Hill..
John Bacon replied to RangerGuy's topic in General Discussion
But he IS allowed to build the garage. But the city has requested that he gift them part of his land in exchange for issuing the permit. This is a completely different case than the example that you provided. In the example that you provided; it appears that the land is considered environmentally sensitive and no should not be developed. In that case you are out the fees and you still don’t get to build. In this case the result of the environmental assessment is that there is no reason to reject a permit. However, the city has requested that he gift part of his land in exchange for issuing the permit. Perhaps there is a valid reason for tying the gift of land with the permit. I cannot think of a valid reason; but one may exist. If the city does indeed have a valid reason for tying the gift of land to the issuance of a permit; then the OP will be back to square one with having to choose between keeping his land, or building a garage. If the city is not able to establish a valid connection between issuing a permit and gifting the land, then he may have the option of getting the fees back; or being able to build the garage and keep his land. If it turns out that the city was simply using as an opportunity to extort the land; then there should be criminal charges against those involved. -

Southern Ontario - Fish Populations Down?
John Bacon replied to LeafsFan's topic in General Discussion
They are not strictly vegetarians; they will eat eggs, crayfish, small fish if they can catch them, etc. However, if a lake has had carp in it for over a hundred years then I don't think that they just caused the population to have dropped the last year or two. -

My brother-in-law welds; but he is up in Bancroft. I suspect that you can find someone closer; but if you are interested I can put you in touch with him. -
Small has motor or electric trolling motor for a small tin boat
John Bacon replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
I think a small outboard will give you better over all use than an electric. The electric motors are nice for positioning but they have limited range. I think a 9.9hp may be overkill for a 12' boat. A 4-6hp should be enough power for most situations. If you have to choose one, I would get the gas motor first. I would probably add and electric later too. Having both is good. The electric motor is better for positioning the boat; the gas is better for trolling or moving from one locaton to another. -
The TRCA is seeking input on the proposed water front project which runs from Bluffers Park to Highland Creek. The deadline for the current round of input is July 12th. If you are a shore angler who would like to have them include some fishing nodes; or, a boat angler who like them to include some boat access (I have had to turn around a leave Bluffers without launching because there was no parking), then you have a few days to let them know. There had been consideration for a full marina on the scale of Bluffers Park. But that has been shelved because Bluffers currently has vacancies. They also cancelled plans for a small boat launch near Highland Creek because of access issues. Personally, I am going to suggest a boat launch near the Guild Inn. https://trca.ca/conservation/green-infrastructure/scarborough-waterfront-project/public-consultation/ https://trca.ca/conservation/green-infrastructure/scarborough-waterfront-project/

Crafty.... I told my son, “You will marry the girl I choose.” He said, “NO!” I told him, “She is Bill Gates’ daughter.” He said, “OK.” I called Bill Gates and said, “I want your daughter to marry my son.” Bill Gates said, “NO.” I told Bill Gates, My son is the CEO of World Bank.” Bill Gates said, “OK.” I called the President of World Bank and asked him to make my son the CEO. He said, “NO.” I told him, “My son is Bill Gates’ son-in-law.” He said, “OK.” This is exactly how politics works . . .

I woud think that the 1.3% refers to that died in the tournament boat livewells or in the livewell of the release boat. I don't think they would have any measurements for post release mortality. I don't know the survival rate is for the bass that they release; but I am sure that some of the must die. Some of the culled fish may die after release as well. Or, some unethical participants may "cull" a dead fish. So, I would agree that the real mortality rate is higher than the 1.3% claimed. But, I am not sure how much higher it is.

Starting/deep cycle dual purpose batteries
John Bacon replied to mike rousseau's topic in General Discussion
A circuit breaker is recommended. However, I did go for about 14 years without one on my old boat without a problem. If you are re-wireing anyway; you might as well do it right and include a breaker. -
My understanding is that the statement was that 20% of people in Toronto have fished; not that 20% of them fish on a regular basis. The former does not sound unreasonable.
