  1. ONE QUESTION . . . WHO or WHAT is continuously referred to all the way through the article as 'WHAT'S HIS NAME??" Steve...substitute m.a.r.s.h. for "what's his name" Whoda thunk Mayor Hall and I shared the same great-uncle Dolph and fished the same area of the m.a.r.s.h. for catfish...wonder if they used "bobs" like me and my grandpappy (great-uncle Dolph's bro-in-law Jesse Ireland) I agree...great read...I'd like to get a copy without all the "What's his names" Can it be turned off Rick ???
  2. Hey old friend...In case you get serious...you don't have to go to Red Deer Alta ...There is a correspondence school in Stratford Ontario that you can do by mail...That is how my bro-in-law learned locksmithing...He was the only one in Lindsay for a few years then he sold the business and van and tools to be a plant manager...Now he is going back to locksmithing to get away from commuting to T.O. everyday from Oshawa...His ad goes in the Yellow pages this fall... Try "google" for the name of the school...
  3. by saying Simcoe will be next... this is from today's Lindsay Post... No special pick-up of carp this weekend Local News - Thursday, August 02, 2007 Updated @ 8:21:23 AM KAWARTHA LAKES - The City of Kawartha Lakes has announced that there will be no special curbside pick-up of carp this weekend although the dead fish are now appearing in Balsam Lake. “Waste management staff toured the lake yesterday with the assistance of the city’s Emergency Service boat,” says Manager of Solid Waste Bill Pickard. “They observed approximately 100 dead carp on the lake. At this point, the numbers do not warrant a special weekend pick-up.” The Ministry of Natural Resources, in a technical briefing held yesterday, confirmed that Balsam Lake was the latest to be hit with the carp die-off. In the briefing, officials said that there was still no clear answer to why the carp are dying and the cause may never been known. Testing is still underway at the University of Guelph Fish Health Lab and also at the Department of Fisheries & Oceans lab in British Columbia. First identified in Lake Scugog, dead carp have also been a problem in the Scugog River, Sturgeon Lake, Cameron Lake, Pigeon Lake, Buckhorn Lake and Chemong Lake. The latest reports of dead carp have been from Balsam Lake, Sandy Lake and Mitchell Lake. Residents are reminded that they can still place the dead carp out for garbage pick-up on their regular collection day as long as it is double-bagged and does not exceed the 40 lb. weight restriction per bag. Carp carcasses will also continue to be received at all city landfill sites at no charge. Waste collection during the week of August 6th will be on the holiday schedule meaning that waste will be picked-up the day after the regular collection day. To report any NEW areas of carp die-offs please call the MNR reporting line at 1-866-929-0994. General calls can be forwarded to the Natural Resources Information Centre: 1-800-667-1940. For those that might not know...Balsam Lake is the headwaters of the Kawarthas...water flows west to Simcoe and east to BOQ from Balsam...
  4. Follow Big Cliff's directions but turn right when you get to hwy 7...about a mile east turn left onto hwy 36...continue to and thru Bobcaygeon and stay on hwy 36 over to Crowe's Line Road...at the lake (Pigeon) there is a small parking area beside the wooden bridge and a beach at the bottom of the hill where you should have no problem launching an inflatable...you will pass Nogies Creek on the way over to Crowe's Line...several places to launch and park on the north west side of the bridge over the creek... Have fun and catch a bunch... BTW...It would be much easier to give directions if people would put their location in their profile...I normally ignore such requests if no location is given but seeing my buddy Cliff obliged I followed suit...
  5. Yep...private property and usually well patrolled...the whole m.a.r.s.h. was bought up by a bunch of well heeled lawyers and doctors from Toronto for their own amusement and enviromental studies...was well posted last time I drove across the causeway...you can fish that side from shore only...
  6. Crappieperchhunter and I do well using 2 1/2 inch Fin-S Minnows in the Arkansas Shiner color on a 1/16 th oz. Fin-S jig head under a slip float... If you are not familiar with slip or fixed floats just use it without a float close to the bottom for perch... If you can't find any Fin-S products by Lunker City...try the Berkly Products but remember ...no bigger than 2 1/2 inches or less... Have fun and catch a bunch... PS...small Mepps spinners tipped with a 1 1/2 inch twister tail might produce also...
  7. Way to go guys !!!...Now you can settle down and do some serious fishing...The first one is always the hardest...
  8. Congrats...Cliff and Carole...and good on you Jason and Solopaddler... Last Thursday while checking out the carp situation over at Carp point (nadda) a couple came by in a trolling motor powered canoe...neat set-up they had...I couldn't see how the motor was attached but it was off to one side near the back and I was surprise at the speed it obtained... Many happy days out on the water... Btw...CPH and I were at the point yesterday and although we caught nuttin' we did see a couple of jumpers...encouraging sign...if it was the same one each time he is going to be well fed from the amount of corn we chummed with...
  9. Not me !!!...A bit too old and decrepit for that...Too hard to get back up !!!
  10. Like Rizzo sez...around the gill area and at the base of the tail...if you see them there you can be assured there are many more in the fillets...sure as hell not very appetizing even if they are well cooked...a couple can be removed with the point of the knife but a bunch...forget it...Yuck !!!
  11. Dang !!!...That's a biggun...what would you estimate the weight?...30 lbs?
  12. Welcome to the board Ron... I believe you are right...they should know by now but are not saying...and that is just not right... People depend on the water for drinking (after filtration and purification) and other household uses...besides swimming and boating and fishing... As you know there are quite a few of us on this board that enjoy a good tussle with carp and then release them... Many years ago I stopped eating any fish out of Lake Ontario and I am beginning to feel the same about all fish out of the Kawarthas Lakes until they give them a clean bill of health...
  13. Make that a house trailer...60 ft x 12 ft wide c/w Florida room and tip-out...All the seller has is the bill of sale from the previous owner, marked "paid" Is this good enough as long as the bill of sale states there are no liens against said trailer...? The owner said there were no liens in front of a witness...me!
  14. My bro-in-law and I are going to look at a trailer today and the question is: How do you find out if there are any liens against a trailer or owner before putting down his hard earned cash ?? Thanks all...
  15. Seeing as how they won't reply to our e-mails about the rigged voting it's become a "if you can't beat 'em...join 'em" and muck-up the works...
  16. Looks like you had a good day my son... Nobody is going to look at your feet when you come in with fish like dem... CPH tells me those crocs are real comfortable...
  17. I keep using the same ones (different colors) over and over until all the tenacles get chewed off or the tube gets split...heating up with a lighter seals them back up ok... I sometimes squeeze some garlic flavored petroleum jelly inside the tube if fishing is slow...
  18. Guess I shoulda asked if it was done by rug hooking...Cliff...no malice intended...LOL
  19. I heard on 105.1 FM P'boro radio station that Lakefield Ont was having a special garbage pick-up last weekend for double bagged carp...so I guess it will hit P'boro next... Hoping to try Carp point up this way (Bobcaygeon) sometime this week to see if they are back...
  20. Brightly colored lures and scented baits...
  21. Caught many pickerel and pike on East Lake many years ago (late 60's) with the original plastic lure...a Creme worm on a worm harness with a small propeller spinner...probably still work there...just add some weight above it and drift with the wind one way and troll back upwind the other... Rice lake pickerel wouldn't touch it...
  22. I understand most Feed stores sell maize in smaller bags nowadays...25 kgs vs the 40 kgs ones and the price has been adjusted accordingly...great for both bait and chumming once it has been boiled for 20 minutes and flavoured with Kool-aide or anise or vanilla or garlic etc...I like to add a handful of brown sugar just 'cause that is the way my mother cooked corn-on-the-cob to sweeten it up... Crappieperchhunter and I both use forceps (hemostats) to unhook a carp as they are mostly hooked in the lips using a hair-rig... If your tackle shop doesn't have them try the local pharmacy... The only flavour of boilies my local tackle shop had last year was tutti-frutti...they worked well along with a couple of pieces of boiled maize on the loop... I keep them in our spare fridge and they keep well even over winter...
  23. Good times!!!...Thanks for the reminder Wayne.
  24. Painfully slow...(my butt gets sore from waiting) Sympatico !
