Yep...like misfish sez...the secret is putting the bottom end of the line back through the eye of the hook before adding your weight causing the hook to stand out and up if tied correctly...try google for descriptions and illustrations...

Cripes...Guys from the UK pay big bucks to fish the waters where you live... Little Lake and the Otonabee River are prime areas... Must be doin' sumpin' wrong...try visiting some carp sites on the internet for information regarding chumming, bait, rigs, tackle...

I've often wondered the same thing on my way over to Bancroft...be interesting to hear some replies...

I recently heard tell of a chap having to hire a scuba diver to retrieve his $600 + carp rod and reel that got pulled in the drink... $50 was cheaper than replacing it... Anybody got their equipment insured for this mishap?

I just inherited an older model of a carp bite alarm from a new friend and it works great!!! I phoned Fishing World in Hamilton and theirs sell anywhere from $45 up to $500 (too much for my limited budget) so the price of mine was just right (free)... Fortunately, another friend had an extra bankstick that it fit and he was kind enough to give it to me... Carp fishing can be a long wait between "bites" so the alarms can be a big help in avoiding a numb bum... What do carp fishermen do when the 'Bite" is not on... Why they stand around shooting the bull of course...Or take pics...

There is a lodge close to Young's Point that caters to carp fishermen... One of our members did a fishing show from there... For a price they supply all the gear and bait...

The only time I was in a boat and wished I had a seatbelt on was in our niece's husband's Stratos (21 ft?) with a 250 Mercury going 80 mph... Cripes, I thought we were going to take off and fly...

WTG Brian...By George I believe you got it !!! Only thing different I would do is take a flame to the tag end after all is tied to stop it from pulling loose... MJL already mentioned doing this... like my buddy Nanook sez..."it's me age don't you know" There are times when the carp may just "mouth" the bait and take off and the hook is still outside its lips and without melting the line you may lose your bait... Do you soften your maize by boiling or soaking ?...it is good to do either whether you are using it for chumming or baiting as small fish do not digest it too well if it is "hard"... You guys are doing well...I'll send you a couple of sites after I finish checking them out myself...

Great report Photoz...I'll have to e-mail our British friend to tell him to look at this thread... Mine hit about 01:45 pm after I made up my mind I was leaving at 02:00 pm... Of course I had to hang around a bit longer (02:30 pm)...

Actually the back is a bit "ouchy" at the moment but...it is the pleasant ache that comes from a day of fishing...awe, you know what I mean...

I got to christen my new carp rod and reel today... After another miss this morning I finally managed to land one...(Carp 5 lost...Beans 1 landed) The guys, Photoz, Rodpody and British Steve said I couldn't leave until I landed one The proof Some of the action: Bye Bye Mr. Carp... Includung my single entry, there were about twenty carp caught between the four of us with British Steve putting on a clinic and catching about half of them...too bad Crappieperchunter couldn't join us or there would have been more I'm sure... Sorry I didn't get your picture Photoz just to show the folks how good you are looking after your operation...any better and you may as well cancel your OHIP...Well maybe not that but what a difference a week made...
-
Going to try to christen my new carp rod again...missed one today...forgot to turn the handle of the reel to take it off ''free spool" before I lifted the rod causing the reel to back spin...by the time I got the line straightened out the carp was gone... That makes it Carp...4 Beans...0...(just getting warmed up... )

We have a couple of them chipmonkeys over at Carp Point that just love to eat corn...they even knock the lid off the Tupperware container and crawl right inside...even if we close the lid with one inside he doesn't stop filling his face... Steve (Crappieperchhunter) has some pictures to download off his camera...maybe he will post some next week after his vacation...

Hey Meely...I stopped by his store to see if Roger could answer your query but he is on holidays...dang the luck !!! I remember there was a sign on Crystal Lake Road for a Marina on the next left so I guess it must be on the north shore I know Roger icefishes up there but he has never mentioned open water fishing... Sorry I couldn't have been more helpful...

I'd like to praise our own misfish for delivering on time also...Thanks again Mate!

I read an article in the North American Fisherman magazine a couple of issues back that made sense to me... Normally, plankton is held near the bottom of the water by gravity and high barometric pressure but during a drop in pressure plankton rises in the water table which in turn starts a feeding frenzy for baitfish which in turn turns on dem fishes that eats said baitfish...

For those of us on a limited budget (retired pensioners etc.) it would be too expensive to "chum" with store bought "boilies" ($7 per 500 grams)... Much cheaper to go to a feed store and pick-up a 40 kilogram bag of maize and either boil a couple of days worth for 20-30 minutes or soak some for a day or so...I like to add a handfull of brown sugar when it comes to a boil and 1/4 of a small bottle of anise from Bulk Barn after it cools some...others use strawberry Koolaid etc... I like to thread a boilie plus a couple of kernels of the maize to my hair rig... Now you got to google "hair rig" to find out how to tie and use one...and then there's ground bait and method or spring feeders to consider...it never ends let me tell you... It's just like starting to fish all over again...great fun though...

Lew, Lew, Lew,...you just got to take up shore fishing for carp and leave the open waters to the idiots until the good fishing starts after Labor Day... Somewhat on the same topic...Crappieperchhunter and I have been carp fishing Little Lake as our favorite "swim" at Carp Point hasn't rebounded from the carp die-off yet... I was shooting the bull with a fellow carper and we were amazed how much of the shoreline was being eroded due to the wake of some boats...and who was the worst offender we saw...The damn tour boat !!!...
-
Chris...as you might have read I just aquired a carp rod and baitrunner reel through the generosity of a fellow OFNer so I can't give you any advice on the reels you mentioned but I'm sure our resident expert (Photoz) or the carp meister who just joined us recently (Rodpody) have all the answers to any questions you have about carping... Here are some pics for your amusement... My homemade corn/boilie flinger... Both our improvised carp gear carriers... And here I are all packed up and ready to leave...
-
Oh ya...I forgot my corn/boilie flinger I just recently made from a $3 metal scoop from the Home Hardware and the bottom part of a spinning rod... Glued the scoop on the rod then duct taped it lots... picture below...

If you are going to stick to carrying those cement blocks around you might consider one of these... This is the handy dandy deluxe model of carp barrows... I wonder what people must think when we walk by with our gear... Crappieperchhunter got a large baby stroller from FreeCycle and it holds everything he needs... I use a luggage carrier with a large white bucket bungee corded to it to carry two pvc pipes about 4'long, 2 horseshoe pitching spikes, 1 camp chair (folded) 1 small steel mallet, 2 banksticks, 1 metal pole about 1/2 inch dia. (for making holes for the banksticks if the ground is hard)...I use the bag for the camp chair to hold the pipes and metal pieces from bouncing around and the drawstring goes around everything to keep it all tied together plus my tackle bag gets shoved down in front to brace the stuff... In my other hand I carry my rod and another white pail that my bait, lunch, and water goes in... Phew...no wonder I'm tired after a day of carp fishing... I gotta take a pic of us one of these days... See down further for pictures
-
You did better than Crappieperchhunter and I did this morning...Three hours of nadda over at our "swim" at Carp Point... The carp are sure slow coming back after the die-off in the Kawarthas but we saw some more "jumpers" today so that is a good sign that there are some swimming about out there...I know mid-summer is not the best time but we normally get a couple between us...we won't give up on them yet...late August / early September should produce some... Congrats on your catch !
-
No christening report yet...Just getting warmed up by losing a couple more carp today... (so did Crappieperchhunter... ) I think I need to use a "bolt rig" until I get used to the "free spool" feature of the baitrunner reel...I'm not used to having to set the hook as the carp did that themselves by pulling out line against the drag of my old spinning outfit... Photoz...What a delightful suprise it was to see you !!!...When you wern't there at daybreak we all figured you wern't up to the long drive...I felt like running (?) up the hill and giving you a hug but remembered you are still hurting from the operation...

basic ledgering ?...test curve ?...I'll have to get Photoz to explain these to me... Nowhere to buy feeders around here so I make my own with hair curlers from the dollar store...they don't hold much feed...actually I prefer not to use them at all and just chum the area with maize...a bell sinker, a hair rig and two kernels of maize with a tutti frutti boilie on the hair... Saw a neat deal today for feeding...looks like sandwich baggies but the material disolves instantly and has small holes so that it sinks quickly...you fill the bag with dry ground bait rather than having to dampen to form balls and it comes with a string to tie the bag closed...not cheap...$22 per 100...what ever will they think of next... Carp fishing has come a long way from winding a hand line around your head and tossing her out with a couple of doughballs attached...LOL Hey OP...long time...that chair is a wicker rocker...one rock over a paw of that pup of yours and the chair will have to go...my cats give it a wide berth when I'm on it...
