  1. I was at our polling station this morning when it opened at 8.30.Community hall in the village. I cast my ballot & hung around chatting to the returning officers for +- 1/2 hour. When I left my guy was in first place,I was the only voter during that time The joys of rural living.
  2. I know people have been doing Beer Can Chicken for years, but have never tried it till today. A buddy gave me a couple chickens he raised himself & thought this might be a good time to give it a try.BIG free range chickens. I used hard apple cider instead of beer. The only downside was GF asking "why are you taking pictures of the chicken?" The bird is resting for a few minutes while the garden potatoes & carrots finish up in the oven. Will post taste test later(only if it is good)
  3. Me & "The Peanut"
  4. This one helps me pass the winter months
  5. Nailed it Shag! My feelings on this topic exactly!
  6. Rick,if you have any doubt about Eagle Lk's ability to produce world class muskie action check out North Shore Lodge's website. North Shore is 1 of the resorts in that episode of River Monsters
  7. I can tell you that it will get rid of ants in the yard, just don't let your neighbours catch you "watering" the anthills
  8. If you & your group are Canadian non-residents ie(another province),you can only buy 1 day or 1 yr licenses,Outdoors cards are needed for anything except 1 day.Non- Canadian fishermen can buy 8 day licenses & also need an Outsdoors card.
  9. They have been spraying the forested slashes north of Dryden for years. I used to hunt in WMU 5 & have seen the results. The biggest impact (imo) is on the moose.Their favorite browse is the young tender hardwoods, over the last few years much of the moose population has moved on to greener pastures.
  10. Gerritt & M2B2 those meals look soooo good. Mr Bliz,I'm only 3 hrs from WPG,drop in anytime Shag,I haven't canned moose for years,LOVE canned moose.
  11. Brined chicken breasts, bacon wrapped peppers stuffed with cream cheese, fingerling potatoes & carrots with olive oil & basil (from garden),cucumber & onion salad,(also from garden). Damn I love summer cooking on the grill
  12. Kinda like mine, this is the view from my deck. Some of members with fish are cool too.
  13. I've got a pork shoulder in slow cooker right now. I like to cook it in Rickards Red beer but today it's cooking in Dr Pepper with onions, garlic & assorted spices. When it is ready to be pulled I discard most of the Dr Pepper & add bbq sauce,My Gr Kids are going to be here later & I know they like Honey & Garlic so that's what they will get.
  14. I lived in small cities,2 different lakes (1 in an organised twp & 1 in an unorganised area) & in the country on 100+ acres. My first choice by a large margin is unorganised lakeside. I was able to build my own place without any building permits,no building inspecter, just hydro & septic permits & inspections required. I did follow building code rules but was not subject to the whims of some local "expert" Living in the country with several acres is my second choice, but not a close second. I am about 10 minutes from a village with an LCBO,grocery store, medical clinic & gas station. I am about 30 minutes from the same small city Simon mentioned in his earlier post. My GF loves the lake life,if she didn't the next one will.
  15. Here you go,Rick 1 can corn or the kernels from 4 grilled corn on cob.(the grilled corn with some char is best) 1 sliced red onion 1 chopped red pepper 1/4 cup lime juice 2 tbsp oil (I use olive) crumbled feta cheese to taste 1/4 cup cilantro leaves (I don't like cilantro,so I use parsley) Salt & pepper. That's all, simple but very good. I like to add a chopped up jalopeno
  16. Tonight's offering. Beer Brined Chicken, potatoes & sweet onions & Lime Corn Salad. I love summer cookin.
  17. Funny story,my GF the nurse suggested I get a RX for the little blue pill, she said I should take enough to stop peeing on the floor & my shoes. She caught me heading out the door to do some yard work last weekend wearing a white sneaker on 1 foot & a grey 1 on the other foot.
  18. 3rd pic is Lupins, they like to spread,I have lots in the back yard
  19. Lew,living in the sticks never gets old.The pic in my avatar is my wake up view for 6+ months of the year.In the evening the loons sing me to sleep. The other time is spent on 160 acres with the GF's 3 horses roaming the back 40 & almost daily visits from the local deer population. On some cold & quiet nights the wolves howl very close. Oh & the night skies, you can't see stars like that in the city.
  20. Cliff,I will try your method for sure. I allways do a few extra cobs for grilled corn salad & char marks are a big +
  21. Wow,scary stuff,so glad your dog is OK. Years ago my medium sized dog had a run in with a groundhog,he got bit on the shoulder,it didn't break the skin but the bruise covered 1/4 of his body. Scooter never learned his lesson & to the day he passed,he allways thought he was top dog & had no fear of anything. He was an "Ear Falls Terrier",Rick you know the area
  22. You guys are sure bringing your "A Game" to this thread. Tonight,Beer Brined chicken thighs, corn on the cob, potatoes, peppers & onions all done on the grill
  23. M2B2 If you mean Village Corner, the entire place burnt up 5 yrs ago & was never rebuilt. Yes their food was excellent.
  24. I live in the Vermilion Bay area,Ear Falls is about 1 hr north on Hwy 105. Small town,GREAT fishing & hunting. You will be about 4 1/2 hrs from Winnipeg,so if you need a city fix you can get away for a weekend of city life,Dryden is about 1 1/2 hours,Kenora 2 hrs I wouldn't consider living anywhere but this area.
  25. Simon,we have had excellent results with Advantix,a couple of years now & the dogs have been tick free.We used to use flea & tic collars but found Advantix to work better.
