Quantum Re-Ax combo on sale at Can. Tire
Nipfisher replied to Nipfisher's topic in General Discussion
Actually Davey for a medium rod it feels pretty stiff. It is really light and that makes it feel fragile. -

Is it safe to leave the boat in the water
Nipfisher replied to buckhorn250's topic in General Discussion
I am certainly no expert....but...from what I have been told...as long as the foot remains under the water (not trimmed out) then there will likely be no damage to your motor. Electronics that become wet then freeze may be an issue. -
Hwy. 11 Crash. 4 million dollars on road
Nipfisher replied to Nipfisher's topic in General Discussion
Here is the latest update. Seems only 3 million was spilled. Video included. Update -
Mmmmmmmm. Smelts. Were they Red, Blue, Orange, or Green? Did you catch them on the right side of the creek or the left? Maybe you had to wear waders and walk in the middle to catch them?

The composite blank feels a bit fragile. If it breaks, I'll bring it back. If it is my fault, then it is only a loss of $24. -
Yep, Joey. I think there is only 3-4 officers for this region. 2 that I know of in West Nipissing. "Streamlining, automation, regional focus, fewer field offices ... that sounds a lot like downsizing and centralization."

MNR in crosshairs

By GORD YOUNG The Nugget Updated 9 hours ago The provincial government may be planning to hammer yet another nail into the coffin of the once visible and respected Ministry of Natural Resources. Lumped in with pay freezes and pension reform for public employees, the axing of planned corporate tax cuts and making well-off seniors pay more for drugs, Tuesday's provincial budget included a section titled Ministry of Natural Resources Transformation. It's not likely to get more than a mention in the flurry of articles and tweets coming from Queen's Park. But here in the North, the MNR plays an important role -- albeit one that has been diminishing. As is the case with most government announcements, it's unclear exactly what the provincial Liberals have in mind. But it doesn't sound positive. According to the budget, the province plans to "conduct resource management with a stronger regional focus and fewer field offices; and redesign its science and delivery activities to shift away from a species-by-species approach to a risk-based ecosystem/ regional approach." The province is also looking at "transforming key parts of legislation, regulations, policies and guidelines with a view to streamlining and automating permitting processes and requirements." Streamlining, automation, regional focus, fewer field offices ... that sounds a lot like downsizing and centralization. The provincial ministry responsible for fish and wildlife never recovered from cutbacks in the 1990s and deteriorate during the past decade. Environment Commissioner Gord Miller highlighted the issue with a scathing report released in 2007 suggesting gradual but steady erosion of funding, staffing and expertise at the MNR left the province's ecosystem at serious risk for catastrophic events." It was around that time that MNR workers in several Northern communities, including North Bay, staged bake sales to draw attention to the funding deficiencies, claiming they wanted to raise money to fill enforcement vehicles with gasoline because operating expenses for conservation officers had been slashed. There has not been much communication from the MNR or its workers in recent years. Perhaps that's because there are too few of them left and they see little hope the MNR can be rebuilt. Biologist Dave Fluri, a steward with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, said the MNR can't take anymore downsizing. If that happens, he said the government may as well completely shut it down. Fluri said the danger associated with a adopting a regional approach to fish and wildlife management is losing touch with what's really happening on the ground in specific areas. John Thornton, chairman of the Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council, said he doesn't quite know what to make of what's proposed for the MNR in the budget. But Thornton said he doesn't have much faith in the provincial Liberal's commitment to Northern Ontario. Thornton said he has some serious concerns, especially when he reads about a regional approach and fewer field offices. He said the loss of the North Bay MNR district office would hurt his organization, which heavily relies on the expertise and resources that's currently there. The MNR is an easy target because it plays a less prominent role in southern Ontario and the effects of cutbacks aren't necessarily immediately apparent. But the thought of even fewer eyes on our lakes and forests, fisheries and wildlife populations is worrisome. We need to be careful about how much we take from nature and we must be mindful of the implications of our decisions on habitat. The MNR has long been the guardian of those resources -- an essential role that's more important today than ever before.

Hwy. 11 Crash. 4 million dollars on road
Nipfisher replied to Nipfisher's topic in General Discussion
9 million was in the trailer, approximately 4 million was spilled on the road. -
Story Yep, that is all Toonies and Loonies on the road and shoulder. A crash of a Brink's tractor-trailer in northeastern Ontario this morning seriously injured the two occupants, and scattered millions of dollars in Canadian coins on the highway and in the nearby bush. The crash happened on Highway 11, south of Ramore, north of Kirkland Lake, when the tractor-trailer collided with a rock cut in Benoit Township around 4 a.m. It also caused a series of chain-reaction collisions that involved a minivan and two other tractor-trailer units. Ontario Provincial Police closed the highway from Matheson to Kenogami, and said it would remain that way for several hours. One occupant of the Brink's vehicle was taken to Bingham Memorial Hospital in Matheson and the other was taken to a Kirkland Lake hospital. Both men remain in hospital with life-threatening injuries. South Porcupine OPP described the "debris field," made up of millions of dollars in Canadian coins, as "massive." The load consisted of loonies and toonies, but the exact value of the money strewn in the area of the crash wasn't immediately known. The driver of the minivan was uninjured, but the drivers of the other tractor-trailer units sustained minor injuries. They have since been released from the hospital. Magnetic cranes to be brought in OPP officer Mark Andrews said Brink's is looking at bringing in a magnetic crane from a nearby scrap yard to pick up the millions in coins. They may use front-end loaders to scoop up dirt, which will be sifted through at another location later. Andrews also said off-duty OPP officers have been hired to help Brink's staff ward off any potential coin scavenging in the area. One of the tractor-trailer units was reportedly carrying candy, which was also strewn across the crash site. Const. Marc Depatie from South Porcupine OPP said visibility could have been a factor in the collision. "This is the first occurrence that I'm aware of where a collision has occurred where the actual load [of Canadian currency] has been compromised," he said. Police said Highway 101 remains open to east-west traffic. Police recommend southbound or cross-country traffic use Highway 655 to Timmins, and then continue south to Sudbury on Highway 144. The opposite route is recommended for northbound traffic or westbound, cross-country traffic.

I have no lockable rod storage in my boat so having a few rods I can leave in there or let my 9 year old use/drop in the lake is a bonus. -
I picked up one of these combos on sale today. They are advertised at $79.99 on sale for $23.99. 70% off. They are 6'6" Medium rods. Not a bad price for a back up I can leave in the boat. Anyone use one of these combos yet? The store in North Bay has about 200 of them left. Here is the link http://flyer.canadiantire.ca/Canadia...&&CityStateZip=

Holy Crap Mike (Solo) that is a BAD situation. Matt, I too did the food thing with "Duffy" as a puppy. I always put my hand in his dish, covered up his food, took food and treats from his mouth (always gave it back) and I trust him around my 2 boys. I still stick to my original reply. If he bit one of my boys (un-provoked) he would be put down. -
Oh and I like Tybo's idea for team names if captains have not submitted names. Losers 3 Loosers 4 Losurs 5

Well tonight was the night. Rod Caster and I went to our Smelt hot-spot and got permission to access the property again this year. Price was 2 bags of frozen Lake Nipissing fish. 1 bag of perch, and one bag of walleye. We checked out the creek but saw no action (it was only 7pm) so we took a little drive. We checked out another couple creeks then set out to find a little back lake that is stocked with Rainbows. I was impressed with Chad's Mazda truck as it handled the wash-outs with ease. We were able to drive up to within a couple hundred feet of the lake. I saw Chad's eyes light up as he smiled and said "it's open, I brought my rod and tackle". We went down to the water and he casted about 20 times. No action but we know where it is now and we will target it another day. Here are a few pics. With flash on Lake shots

Well Matt, either the dog or the wife and girls have to go. On a serious note my lab/collie mix is almost 16 years old and I got him just after he was 5 weeks old becuase he was being bullied by the other bigger puppies. As much as I love Duffy, if he bit either one of my boys he would be gone immediately. If he bit my wife, she would take care of him and then tell me he bit her. -
Karma... it is a three way street correct?
